i have to the an essay of this question and i need at least 3 strong arguemnets.
"Compare the ways in which religion shaped the development of colonial society (to 1740 in Two of the following regions:
New England
Chesapeake
Middle Atlantic"
For New England...the Puritans' customs affect us even today, such as the belief that sex outside marriage is wrong (though that's in all Christian denominations). There's a pretty good amount more but I just got back from a game, I'll get back to you on this one.
In the Mid-Atlantic area the Quakers were the key part of causing the whole region to be very tolerable to other religions and races, whereas N.E. and the South were not.
Yeah, the Puritans are the obvious choice for one of them anyway - they were super hardcore about their beliefs, which influenced pretty much everything in their society.
I must confess I won't be much help for either of the other two, though - it's been several years since I've taken the class...
