How and why did the Civil War evolve from a war to preserve the union to a total war to abolish slavery?
this is the prompt i have to write about but i just dont no where to start. help me please...
Look at it this way: both total war and the abolition of slavery were mainly used as a tactic against the Confederates.

The Battle of Antietam proved to be the "victory" Lincoln had been awaiting. It was just enough of a victory to justify Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. On January 1, 1863, the final proclamation resulted in the Civil War's entrance into a full-fledged antislavery crusade.
