Title: stem cell bill
Is fusa tuitim na eirigh - January 12, 2007 04:42 AM (GMT)
253-174 vote in house passes the bill through the house bush promises to veto it, but this bill is getting closer to the majority it needs to override the veto, i think it would be great to pass a bill increasing stem cell research because it could help cure diseases in millions of americans

By passing this law, embyotic stem cell research would be legalized. Why do you need to kill an unborn baby? Yes it would be used to save millions, BUT you can get the same stem cells from the placenta and embillical cord. Plus if the embryotic stem cell law passed, many more women would be getting abortions jsut to earn extra cash. Under that law the women has a choice to sell the fetus to company to use for embryotic stem cell research. And no doubt women would get pregnant and get abortions jsut to earn the money, says a lot about some people in this world doesn't it.

I am also for stem cell research.
At first I was against it becuase they could only get it from aborted embryo's. Just this weak though, scientists found they are in large numbers in the placenta and ambilical cord. So without any person being hurt they could be extracted and used to cure diseases.
So, it seems we agree on something.

As long as Stem Cell research does not mean killing unborn fetuses, I have no problem with it. It is the Fetus Stem Cell research I am against.

What is stem cell research? What is there to be pro/against it for? Sorry for being so uninformed about particular topics. I mean, if it includes killing babies then count me out.

Stem cells, to my understanding are like "blank cells." The reason scientists thought they could only be found in embryos is because in a fetus state, your body is basically a bunch of blank cells waiting to be coded to grow into different tissue. For this reason scientists believe that by extracting these "blank" cells, they can artificially program them ti make muscle tissue to do such things as replace a bad heart, spinal defects leading to paralysis, and anything else they can code for. That's stem cells in a nut shell.

Really? I thought they knew about that for a while now. Anyway I'm all for it think of all the lives it would save. It's also true you can extract more stem cells from the ambilical cord, and even from human fat, though they are considered second rate to those from an ambilical cord.

Well, not all forms of stem cell research includes killing unborn fetuses. There is a way, as my biology teacher revealed to me, that you CAN extract these without killing a fetus. (Uh-Oh guys!!! I USED CAPS!!! NOBODY TELL IS FUSA!!!!) But yeah, don't just turn against it because of that. It has the potential to save millions of people, researching stem cells.

Haha thank both of you. As long as they can take the stem cells by other means as you say, Facistfool, then I'd be ok with it. And Patriot you seem to know alot about the subject I must say I am impressed.

Thankyou. Believe it or not, I actually remember that from a TV show I saw once. It wasn't even a news cast!

they recently found out tho that the embriotic cells arent as good as they thought. they can do some things stem cells can but no where near the full amount. i am undecided on this issue i think its amazing they can help people but killing unborn babies i dont like to im stayin neutral. so yea!

Embryonic stem cells are stem cells. Perhaps you should read up a bit before commenting?
The idea is that stem cells in general may be helpful for various health purposes; since they have the potential to grow into any cell in the human body, they could be used to grow anything from some extra liver or brain tissue up to an entire human heart.
The obvious place to look for these cells is in early-stage human embryos; that's more or less what an embryo IS at the beginning. However, some people object to the destruction of human embryos to harvest stem cells, and fairly recently all federal funding for new stem cell lines originating from human embryo destruction was cut off. Since few lines to test on means less reliable research, scientists have been looking into possible other sources of stem cells, some of them in not-so-obvious places (
such as noses). However, it's currently not clear whether these alternate sources of cells are quite as elastic as ones harvested directly from human embryos.
This has been Orborde's Daily Informative Post.
EDIT: Is fusa tuitim na eirigh: For general sanity's sake, please link to an article or something next time. Not all of us are as religious about reading the news as you are; cut us some slack and provide some context.
Here is an article a quick Google turned up on the subject that provides some decent background to the issue in Congress. Also, the bill in question is
HR 3. Please provide some more information on what you're talking about next time.
A detail to this that most of you seem to have missed is that the bill being considered authorizes
only embryonic stem cells derived from leftover embryos from fertility treatments
that would otherwise be discarded (this means "babies in the garbage" for you uninformed types). In addition, the bill explicitly states that it is
illegal for the embryos to be bought.
| QUOTE |
| The individuals seeking fertility treatment donated the embryos with written informed consent and without receiving any financial or other inducements to make the donation |
Bill text (it's short)It is generally fruitful to go read about what's going on directly instead of simply opinionating based on "the buzz".
