ArticleAs you can see, the government is doing more against illegal immigration than I believe any of us had forseen. I was surprised to hear though that most of the illegal immigrants were NOT from Mexico. Some of the group included Europeans, previously arrested criminals, and a rapist!
Making a sweep of 750 plus illegals is nice, but with millions in America, some criminals as you can see, is it really enough? And since when have we had so many illegals not from Mexico?
Whether or not they are Mexican, they still come through Mexico. As you said, 750 isn't a very impressive number. However, it is a start. Our government needs more of these "purges" of exportation to set a precedent: legality or inequality. It just isn't fair to the people who came and come legally. You cannot treat an illegal equal to an American citizen simply because they got here, and it is NOT our job to give them work! That is Mexico's job - a job they are doing terribly.
I completele agree with Falangist. Illegals should be completely denied all rights of the constitution. It isn't fair for those who came legally and waited sometimes for years to become a citizen, to be denied work offers because an illegal can do it for cheaper. Just as the Insular Cases after the Spanish-American War decided that constitutional rights would not follow the newly obatined islands, illegal immigrants to America would not be given equal rights under the U.S. Constitution. We have the right and duty to deport and demoralize illegal immigrants in the U.S. We can't have a free country if those coming in illegaly are usurping equal rights for their own benefits.
Why are illegals swarming over here in the first place? Because there are piles of employers who just don't care about the whole issue. If you really want to exert pressure on illegal immigrants, look into the people employed by businesses you buy from. Looking for the cheapest thing only will get you businesses that revolve around reducing costs. I say the same thing to people who complain about large business chains destroying small business, occasionally as I talk to them while walking around Wal-Mart.
That said, I agree with the concept that illegal immigrants should be deported and so forth, because it just isn't fair to those who are willing to wait. However, burning money pushing them back is not the best solution; I would much rather see the immigration quotes be significantly relaxed so that immigrants have less incentive to cheat. If you make it easy to legally enter the States, you can also do things like educate immigrants on their rights and on minimum wage, and since they're here legally, they can safely report employers who violate labor laws.
I don't condone rewarding cheaters, though, which is why I think the concept of an amnesty is not a good one. However, the best way to keep people from cheating is to make it a better and easier option to do it legally.
I agree with you, Orbode. You cannot go after the effect and simply ignore the cause which is lackluster laws to combat the corporations on this.
And I'm glad we see eye to eye averagejoe. It is absolutely true that it nearly encourages illegal immigration if immigrants see that they can come illegally and not be punished. When they look at it like that what is the point of legal immigration?
