i always wondered. Were the custodes the Emporers personal guard and only went with him or were they helping out all over the place?

well to me the name would suggest they were a body guard, all the pics ive seen are of them guard the imperial palace on terra

they where his presonal guard, SMs made after him like a 21st legion just not on such scale, they where used as messengers and representatives with in the fleets

as far as im aware the Custodes were genetically modified rather than gene seed enhanced and they always stayed with emperor, though detachments were sent to ensure the emperor's will was carried out.
