I have only ever foumd 3 (out of 12) model soldiers. What sort of bonus do you get for collecting all of them? Is it possible, or is it a red herring? :umm:

Yes it's possible. I don't know the bonus you get though. In fact, in a guide it said "Purpose unknown" :S

I once saw somthing on the internet that if you collect all 12 + 1 hidden in northen cave that you can recruit seph to your party by taking them to the cave where you get vincent's last limit and then going to fight ultimate weapon but do not hurt him summon the soldier commander and then he flees to northern cave I forgot the rest but keep in mind this is only for the japs version!
