Project Beginning... Um... I don't remember... XD
Release Deadline... Late Summer-Early Autumn/Fall

A wee project of mine that I've been working on recently. I would like to thank Sunny for allowing me to post this up. Over the summer, you'll be able to see footage of it on YouTube. While there IS a serious storyline, this is not all there is. It's got a lot of parodying and funnies as well as your typical "world-save-ery" plot.

Story and Characters

QUOTE
The Story

The world is a place of harmony and peace, ruled by the Anglos Empire. In this world, humanity fears nothing and is united as one. One day, humanity located a new source of energy. Invisible to the human eye, but a greater source of power than anything else known. Because of the superstition amongst the common man that it had come from the netherworld, it was named "neth".

With neth, humanity build machines and its empire grew evermore vast and powerful with each passing day. Until one fateful day when people all over the world began to change. Some found they could see the future, while others found that they could control the elements. Some found that they could heal the wounds of others, and some found they could call invoke the powers of space. It was not known until later that this was a result of humanity's exposure to neth. Those exposed to it for too long found that they could manipulate the world around them by invoking the powers of neth. These abilities were known as "nethens" and those who used them as "nethists".

Sema Rathan was just a child when he found he could manipulate the water in the atmosphere, in the oceans, and in peoples bodies. As he grew older, he used this power to heal others, yet he never understood peoples facial expressions, constantly loathed the touch of others, and found difficulty in large groups of people. He began a new life as the healer of the town of Raekommen. It is not until after he fails to save a life that his own is plunged into a journey to learn the nature of the chaos that is slowly gripping the world...

<Characters shall be updated as appropriate>

user posted image
Sema Rathan
Age... 17
Height... 6'03"

Sema Rathan is a youth, born on the island of Brannis. He is a kind and generous youth who truly aspires to be a good person, but his difficulty in understanding the feelings of other people causes problems in his life. When angered, Sema tends to lash out like a wild animal and become incredibly foul-mouthed. He is fiercely protective of his friends and does not distinguish between them and true-blooded family. Sema is also a fantastic cook but the party banned him from doing so. Would you trust a man whose special dish was called "Sema's Spinny Dizzy Wasted Whirling Dirvish Twisted Knuckle Justice Inferno Pasta From Hell" to cook for you?

user posted image
Ayenni Bianpa
Age... 18
Height... 5'08"

Ayenni is Sema's childhood friend, having known him ever since he first developed his nethic abilities. She is a very kind girl who is much loved by everyone she knows. She is one of the very few who can honestly say that they can come close to understanding Sema. The two have been drifting apart during the last two years, however, and there are some aspects of his personality which she does not understand, creating an uneasy gap between them.

user posted image
Lani Anills
Age... 16
Height... 5'09"

Lani is a young girl from the village of Soldanese. She is rather creative, but also hyperactive and at times very violent. She also has something of a short temper, but is surprisingly level-headed. Lani pretty much makes Sema join her party as she hunts for a thief of griffon eggs. She places the lives of animals on equal ground (and often above) that of humans, and has a habit of attacking anybody who doesn't agree with her, which causes most members of the group to fear her. She is perhaps the most dangerous member of the party because she has an undying urge to shoot anything that moves and to hurt people. For this reason, nobody gives her any caffine.

user posted image
Areck Filostrate
Age... 16
Height... 5'11"

Areck is a bandit. Not a very good bandit, mind, although his list of crimes include theft, property damage, ordering respected members of the civil service to perform indecent acts upon themselves, making repeated threats on the lives of others, underage alcohol consumption, drunken displays of violence, indecent exposure and - allegedly - defecating in public. He is - somehow - near the top of most of the wanted lists in the world, which is kind of ironic considering that most of the time he doesn't realise that he's doing anything wrong, living the world in a half-daze focusing only on money, riches and beautiful women. His goal is to become a "chickionaire", which is by his description "a millionaire... but with chicks!!". Nobody in the party trusts the raving kleptomaniac though.

user posted image
Kapiru Muneburaito
Age... 14
Height... 5'03"

Kapiru is a young boy from the city of Anquedor. He is a good-hearted youth, but one who is very level-headed. He sometimes says things which seem beyond his age, which has an unnerving effect on the party.

user posted image
Hisham Chojirus
Age... 33
Height... 6'00"
Build... Muscular
Weapon... Axe/Spear (Polearms)
Class... Frontline Attacker/Tanker
Neth Type... Steel

Hisham is Areck's adoptive father. He is a man who cares a great deal about his family and is not afraid to give up his life for them. He and his wife Osonye took Areck in ten years ago, and as such are very protective of him. Hisham is the strongest party member physically. Not just because of his muscular build, but also because of his Neth of Steel, which strengthens his abilities and grants him a large amount of destructive power.

user posted image
Felspar Esca
Age... 21
Height... 5'08"
Build... Average
Neth Type... Life

Felspar is a young woman who was recently married to Minister Rodrigue. She can often appear cold or uncaring, but this is merely because she is such a rational person who thinks and acts with a great level of logic. Although she can be harsh to strangers, she is a completely different person around her friends.

Empress Ryna Diagarche
Age... 23
Height... 5'08"
Build... Slim
Neth Type... Unknown

Empress Ryna lost her father at a young age. From then on, she has been reluctant to express her true feelings to anyone - constantly having to fend off gold digging suitors and tiresome governors. Little is known about the empress due to her lack of contact with the outside world. Although she gives the occasional speech in public, she rarely leaves her castle. No-one is quite sure why she has recently asked for all those with nethic power to be brought to her castle. Although the official statement is that she herself is a Nethist, there has yet to be word as to what it is exactly that she can do...

user posted image
Grahm Astlers
Age... 25
Height... 6'03"
Build... Average
Weapon... Sword
Neth Type... Sun

Grahm is a commander in the imperial army. Having been raised as a soldier, he is ruthlessly efficient on the battlefield. This is not to say that he is an evil person, however, as he is known for being a very considerate leader to his soldiers. Grahm's nethic power allows him to intensify the sun's rays. Classified as one of the most powerful nethists ever to be born, it is rumoured that the leaders of the empire are constantly trying to keep him in check.

user posted image
Cierph Kleidaus
Age... 23
Height... 6'00"
Build... Slim
Weapon... Sword
Neth Type... Sound

Cierph, along with Grahm, is another commander of the imperial army. Cierph's nethic ability allows him to manipulate and create sounds. However, he is unsatisfied with his power and is constantly seeking new ways to become stronger. He is short-tempered and easily angered but also somewhat effeminate and self-obsessed, which makes it more difficult to take him seriously, leading to his anger building even further. Cierph is obsessed by neth and believes that those who can use it will become the rulers of the planet.

user posted image
Miria Yukita
Age... 14
Height... 5'00"
Build... Slim
Weapon... Magic-infused Cards
Neth Type... Mirror

Miria is a very childish young girl, but also a very sadistic one. She finds great delight in inflicting pain on others, but also has a tendency to lose her temper and throw a tantrum when things aren't going her way. She utterly despises nethists, including herself. With her Neth of Mirror, Miria has the ability to change the direction that neth is channelled in. This allows her to reflect the abilities of other nethists, and also to change the current of neth in order to support herself or her allies.

Miria Yukita was submitted for use in Tales of the Ocean by blacklisted.

Narea Melchaus
Age... 23
Height... 5'10"
Build... Slim

Narea is the personal attendant of Empress Ryna. He appears to be weak, but he has a calculating mind. Narea is always one step ahead of those around him, and his intellect has earned him the respect of many. There are many who are envious of his close relationship with Empress Ryna and suspect it to be more than what it appears...

Rodrigue Esca
Age... 28
Height... 5'11"
Build... Average

Rodrigue is the Minister of War in the imperial parliament. As such, he has a responsibility for being involved with the actions of the military. Despite his affilation with people such as Grahm and Cierph, he is actually a very caring individual who believes that the crisis in the world can be solved through means other than violence. He is very supportive of the party and loves his wife Felspar very much.

Osonye Chojirus
Age... 30
Height... 5'07"
Build... Average
Neth Type... Foresight

Osonye is the wife of Hisham and Areck's adoptive mother. She, along with her husband Hisham, was taken away by the imperial army because of her ability to use neth, specifically the Neth of Foresight, which allows her to see the future on a limited scale. She is a very loving person, although she can be strict and demanding at times.

Nice. Is it turnbased? Cause it sure looks like it.

Seraphim Swordmaster - June 16, 2007 08:22 PM (GMT)
It is turn-based, which is a real shame. If I find out how to do a proper Tales fighting system though, you bet I'm going to out it in!

TheSpasticFantastic - June 16, 2007 11:01 PM (GMT)
so what program are you doing it in

Seraphim Swordmaster - June 17, 2007 04:34 PM (GMT)
RPG Maker 2003, because I think that the XP version is... well... a bit naff to be totally honest.

NuklearArel - June 17, 2007 04:57 PM (GMT)
What are you talking about? XP is superior to 2003 in almost all ways.

Seraphim Swordmaster - June 17, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
It's just my preferences. I just find 2003 easier to use than XP.

NuklearArel - June 17, 2007 07:12 PM (GMT)
What do you have troubles with in XP? Events work about the same way, there are many scripts to change the battle system. The scripts may look hard, but if you follow instructions, it's really easy. Once you get scripts down, you can do basically anything to your game.

TheSpasticFantastic - June 17, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
yeah i think xp has a script for a tales style battle system

Shalafai - June 17, 2007 10:04 PM (GMT)
Somehow I can't seen to be able to use RPG Maker on my PC... So until I figure out to work it I won't be able to play your game, but it's looking good.

NuklearArel - June 18, 2007 12:01 AM (GMT)
As long as he includes the necessary files, you won't need to download RPG Maker.
Or at least, that's how it works with XP. I'm not so sure about 2003.

Seraphim Swordmaster - July 22, 2007 11:16 AM (GMT)
NuklearArel
I guess there's just the fact that there's the huge amount of daunting looking code in the script, and also the fact that I don't have (insert UK equivalent of $60 here) to spend.

Shalafai
I'll include all the necessary files in the demo, so I hope it works. If that does not work, scream at the top of your lungs and smash the keyboard repeatedly. And then swear. Loudly.

UPDATES!!:

http://rapidshare.com/files/44336814/OceanDemo.zip

Includes...
- A test video including a battle and a look at the world map. Sorry for using the RTP... I'm still fairly a newbie at this... :( Oh well, we have a Veigue recoloured from my rip, so credit goes to That Guy Who Made The Veigue Sprite™.
- A video where the magic using Kapiru owns Dhaos by using nearly every offensive spell in the game. The majority of light and dark spells haven't been made yet. Also features Indignation, but for some reason that caused it to freeze up. Oh whoops. ^^

Leon Magnus - July 22, 2007 07:12 PM (GMT)
I did find a Tales Script called "Project X", and it's really simple, but not the newer one, the older one thats in another language. xD That I find easier to use, and allies don't attack you. Though I currently don't know how to work weapons and skills, but it's still really simple.

Anyway, so far, it's looking pretty good for a RM2K3 game.

Seraphim Swordmaster - July 22, 2007 07:28 PM (GMT)
I take it that you watched the videos then? Well, luckily for you we have part one of it up on YouTube now! Here's the link:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1-00k-M1m6g

Leon Magnus - July 22, 2007 09:40 PM (GMT)
Not bad, though I do say that the sprite from Veigue is glitchy, it looks like he's doing a little dance. xD

Seraphim Swordmaster - July 24, 2007 10:12 AM (GMT)
Yeah. A bit like Michael Jackson on crack cocaine if you ask me... ¬¬

Fortunatly, I've fixed it. Part two's also up, and I'm doing part 3's video upload now.

UPDATES:

Videos 3-5 are now uploaded, and part six is in the bag, with Sema/Veigue's animation fixed.

Leon Magnus - July 25, 2007 07:53 PM (GMT)
Well, it's an RM2K3 game, and there is a Tales RMXP script, but still, I always wanted to help someone in one of these game projects. I am working on a completely custom ND3 spritesheet of a character anyway, so I may be able to help you with your sprites an animations, maybe better than he recolors. =D Ok, not really, but I can try. Even though Sunny is 100X better, but I am sure he has better things to do.

I also am used to RM2K3 animation sheets, so yeah. D:

Seraphim Swordmaster - July 28, 2007 05:39 PM (GMT)
Random: Wow... When did I become a member all of a sudden? XD!!

Anyway Leon, I'd be honoured to have you on the team! Please do anything you can to support the project. Any sprites or recolours or anything you have would be much appreciated. Please let me see any sprites you have as soon as you're ready! :D

Hmm... In the way that is told, that makes me think about Heroes. oO

It is a good RM2k3's project. I think RM2k3 is perfect in order to make a "Tales of" video game because its resolution (320*240) is the same as the SNES/GBA's resolution (or approximately the same).

RMXP is a good program only if the user can understand the "ruby". I see too many video games which are only made with "RTP" and a lot of scripts... those scripts are too many times useless because their effects can be programmed by events...

Scripts only help the lazy's makers.
Scripts are devils. :ph43r:

I'm sorry, what? Lazy?

I don't think spending countless hours on these scripts is considered lazy. Often, I help my friends by editing scripts and modifying their battle system, menu system, message system, etc.
Here's how it looked a few months ago, and it's far updated now: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oyRMC6Epuo4

I don't think a lazy person can accomplish that. And it's been improved so much since that trailer was made.

Scripts are not the devil. Scripts are the most powerful thing you could ever have. Do you want FF2's leveling system, a Dragon Warrior-like message system, a Tales battle system, a Pokemon capture system? Yes, scripts can do all that plus more.

I don't know what else to say, but I don't think such a "devil" would be only for "lazy" makers.

Mex - July 29, 2007 09:17 AM (GMT)
Sorry, that is not what I was saying ^^''

With " Scripts only help the lazy's makers.", I wanted to say "lazy's makers" who just copy/paste a lot of scripts without any edition or modification. I have a lot of examples about that (in the french RM's community ^^''), like the "Day/Night script", which can be made only with one or two common events.

But I think RMXP is a good programm for the users who understand the "ruby" ^^

(your video is awesome, good job ;) )

Seraphim Swordmaster - July 29, 2007 02:59 PM (GMT)
Heroes? You mean the Wii game No More Heroes? Isn't that about assassinating the face off everybody that gets in the way of your smexy laser-type-katana-beam-sword-thing?

Weeeeell, anyway guys, thanks for all your support. And to Leon Magnus, those sprites ROCK harder than... erm... an ACTUAL ROCK!!

user posted image

That's an actual rock, by the way. It rocks because it's rocky, and therefore under the principles of Rockology, it must rock because it is in fact a rock and nothing that is not a rock cannot rock because it is not a rock.

" " - Everybody. The entire world. Ever. Hehehehehe. ^^ :D

Anyway, thanks for all the support guys. If any of you have any YouTube accounts, pleeeeeease *puppy dog eyes* leave your comments and ratings. Pleeeaseeee? *Puss in Boots mode*

Hehehehehe. ^^ :D  :D  :D  :D

Actually...Heroes refers to a TV show where some people suddenly discover that they have special powers...that's as much as I know...

It's probably not broadcasted in Europe...

TheSpasticFantastic - July 29, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
Yeah it is.

Mex - July 29, 2007 09:14 PM (GMT)
Yep, it is (yesterday, we saw the 11th and 12th episodes). And that was what I meant ^^

Seraphim Swordmaster - July 30, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
Ah...

Wow. I feel stupid now! :D

Maybe I need to start watching the TV again (ever since reality TV flooded us, I've avoided television like the plague).

Icezera - August 1, 2007 04:24 AM (GMT)
ive seen the vids, and they are awesome. hope u release it soon
now if u somehow had sync in it :sink: .......cuz hes the best tales boss around

Leon Magnus - August 1, 2007 07:22 AM (GMT)
Also, we're planning on adding an arena and an EX Dungeon (Actually more like the Tower of Druaga in ToD PSX.), so theres a chance we can fit him in there. Though, right now, the whole secret character thing is going to take quite awhile to do. D:

Um... What do you mean "I don't think it will work", exactly? If you mean "it's turn based" then I apologise, but RM2003 doesn't give me anything else to work with.

Besides, I've got good feedback for it so far so I think that we can make it work. ^_^

Edit:

Important Updates:

I have updated the main page with loads of new information about the game, with more videos, character profiles, etc... being uploaded onto the main page.

In addition, I have also got to Part 26 of the videos, which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbVgabpEQT8
