Title: Lakers Summer League

ntw - July 8, 2005 04:08 PM (GMT)
Anyone else going? I'm gonna try to make it to the last 2 games tonight, the main event being LAL vs MEM. If I go, I'll let everyone know how Bynum is up close and if there are any other interesting prospects.

madsen35 - July 8, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
Oh man you're soooo lucky! I wish I could go but I live in the middle of nowhere.

Please give a full write-up and some pictures if you can. Good luck getting some autographs and have a fun time man!

i only stayed for the first half but heres a breif rundown of the guys i saw in action:

Tony Bobbit- Unfortunantly I didnt see much improvement from Bobbit since last season. Jumper wasnt falling, ok D, dont expect him to be around.

Andrew Bynum- the guy I came to see. My first impression was "theres no way he's 270." Looks young, inexperienced, nervous, out of shape and has metal hands. He needs alotta work, but on the bright side he did grab a couple offensive rebounds for putbacks and altered a couple shots.

Marcus Douthit- He almost made the team last year but cuz of some legal trouble the team sent him overseas for a year. Hit his first two shots of the game, still looking solid, dunno if he'll make the team.

Smush Parker- Great floor general for us out there. Played nice D and ran the offense well.

Eric Sandrin- 4 fouls in 2 minutes. Can jump outta the building and was doing all sorts of dunks in warmups but didnt see much else.

Ronney Turiaf- Reminds me of a raw Ben Wallace. He hustled on every play and gave it his all. Too bad his all included 2 offensive fouls, but hey the effort is there, he'll be solid off the bench for us immedietly.

Von Wafer- Biggest surprise for me. Looked awesome. Lightning fast, great handles, awesome shot. Was diving after loose balls and gave the crowd something to cheer about.

Sasha Vujacic- Looked like a veteran out there. He carries himself very well and has obviously worked on his handles and shot so far this summer. May be a serviceable backup next year.

Other players from different teams that made an impression:

TOR- C. Villanueva F
-Scored 23 points and made good decisions when the game was on the line. Very unselfish.
MEM- H. Warrick F
-Took it to the basket hard and strong on more than one occasion.
TOR- K. Braswell PG
-Dunno if he was drafted by TOR or what but he was impressive. Tight D and a sweet shot, should definently be playing in this league.
DAL- D. Logan PG
-Way too small for the NBA, but is very quick, great dribbler and has range. Impressive for his size.
DAL- R. Forehan-Kelly G/F
-Really good shooter along with enthusiastic team player.

Thanks a bunch for the write-up! Did you see any Laker brass there? I know Phil, Kupchak, and Jerry West were there.

I also heard that Bynum got a double-double and that Sasha and Bobbit sucked.

The biggest surprises were Smoosh and Von Wafer, correct?

And did you see any of Devin Green? I really like the scouting report on this guy.

ntw - July 9, 2005 04:47 PM (GMT)
I didnt get to see any Laker brass, but during the TOR-DAL game my friend and I sat behind the Grizzlies summer league squad and listened to their commentary on the game.

Devon Green looked good when he was in, nothing spectacular but he wasnt in that long.

Smush and Wafer played much better than I expected, Wafer especially.

When I left at halftime Bynum had 4 pts, 3 reb, 3 foul. That would be great if he pulled a double double out.

Bobbit sucked, Sasha looked good.

ntw - July 9, 2005 04:57 PM (GMT)
Bynums statline: 12 pts, 9 rebs, 2 blocks in 30 mins.

madsen35 - July 9, 2005 05:06 PM (GMT)
Regarding Sasha: I heard that he really sucked it up. He only had 2 points and rushed a lot of things. I'd rather cut Sasha and keep Smush or Devin Green.

Nice write-up...gimme more!

ntw - July 9, 2005 05:25 PM (GMT)
In other news, barbosa still sucks and didnt even have an impressive a statline as andrew bynum.

Sealy - July 9, 2005 05:54 PM (GMT)
Uh oh...

AIfan1330 - July 9, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
At Least Barbosa doesn't look like a 7'1 Brian Cook...and he sure as hell doesn't have a Myspace that his team had to take down so they wouldn't look like fools in drafting him...

HFC6 - July 9, 2005 06:15 PM (GMT)
Von Wafer is a pretty good guy. Saw alot of him at FSU. IMO, he should have stayed in college the extra year. I'm still glad to hear he is doing good, though!

Ronny Turiaf reminds me of Udonis Haslem. A rugged guy, who will light up the boards for you. The only difference is that Turiaf needs to work on his J.

If you ever watch the Heat, can you tell me how we do? I would really appreciate it! I had fun reading it, ntw. hpy.

Wow, good one. Attacking his Myspace. What's next, attacking his dog?

You really just dissed him good! Oh and I don't think the Lakers have much control over what Bynum does with his personal life - so they wouldn't look like fools for picking him.

But anyways, this isn't really my argument, so I'll stay out of it.

Don't worry dude, we're just playing. ntw is the one who said bynum looks like a 7'1 brian cook.

Oh sorry man my bad. It's hard to understand sarcasm when you can't hear the tone of voice or facial expressions hahaha.

Sooo true.

Real Deal - July 10, 2005 12:14 AM (GMT)
Haha, that MySpace was a joke. "Bynum" was on it at the same exact time he was walking to get his Laker hat, and throughout the whole thing, he was messaging people on the MySpace forums.

I went to look for the messages, but now they're gone...funny...maybe he got caught being stupid, and deleted them.

ntw - July 10, 2005 12:42 AM (GMT)
The whole myspace thing was rediculous. Although, when youre 17 and in high school its a very normal thing to do, its just when the media and thousands of fans pick it apart do you look like a moron. I dunno why you wouldnt be able to find the messages he left for other people, as he wouldnt be able to delete them, only the person who 'owns' the account can.

HFC6- I plan on going again, if I see the Heat play i'll let you know how they look. Turiaf and Haslem have similar braiding styles, but from what I've seen Turaif looks more rugged and active but and has a worse shot.

ntw - July 10, 2005 04:10 PM (GMT)
Statlines from game 2:

Turiaf- 26 pts, 9/11 FGs, 11 rebs, 2 ast in 27 mins
Bynum- 16 pts, 2 rebs, 6 fouls
Smush Parker- 17 pts, 7/9 FGs
Devon Green- 12 pts, 9 rebs, 4 ast

Turaif played awesome. Bynum was weak on the boards but was at least find a way to score. Smush and Green were surprising again.

madsen35 - July 10, 2005 06:50 PM (GMT)
ntw- Where are you getting your boxscores from? I heard that Bynum got around 8 rebounds.

ntw - July 10, 2005 07:12 PM (GMT)
the SPL scorekeepers are horrible.

big - July 12, 2005 04:20 AM (GMT)
That's got to be the worst box score I've ever seen... Where did you find it?

ntw - July 13, 2005 08:58 PM (GMT)
im going again today to watch LAL vs MIA. If I see anything that is drastically different than what I origionally reported, I'll let you know. Will also let you know on how Wayne Simien and the Heat are looking.
