One of Newcastle United's oldest fans, Stevie Charlton, has died at the age of 84. He enjoyed a high profile during the 1990s, when television cameras regularly picked him out in the crowd and invariably commented: "There's one old boy who can remember the last time Newcastle won the league."

He became the acceptable face of failure during the Keegan era, so much so that Sky Television bought him a season ticket and took him to away games, just so they could focus their cameras on him as another title challenge evaporated.

He was indeed just about old enough to recall United's last league triumph, in 1927. Stevie attended his first game in April of that year when, as a five-year old, he perched on his father's shoulders in the old Leazes End, and watched the Toon beat Spurs 3-2.

Poor health prevented him going to games in recent years, but he was still spotted regularly in the city centre until a few months ago. The photograph above was taken by Newcastle Stuff in Fenwick's, where he was sat on the 'gadgie seat' inside the doorway, greeting shoppers.
