Name of the DVD/series: That Peter Kay Thing
Episode Number: One
Episode Name: In The Club

Length of the episode : 24 mins 20 secs

First Broadcast: 12 January 2000 (according to www.imdb.com)

Overall rating out of 5: FIVE Naturally

Main Characters? Brian Potter, Marc Park, Jerry St Clair, Max & Paddy, Les Allanos, Paul Le Roy

What the episode is about: Following the success of the “pilot” episode the true series continues the “Spoof documentary” theme, narrated by Andrew Sachs, with a behind the scenes look at The Neptune Club as it hosts the Annual Talent Trek night. Of course the real joy of this episode now lies in the knowledge that these characters would end up bringing to life the wonderful Phoenix Nights. We meet the wheelchair-bound Brian Potter – owner of the Neptune (who mentions a wife!), Jerry Dignan – The compere, resident band Les Allanos (the bands name being constructed from the musicians own name “Les and Allan, Us”, Marc Park – One half of the act Park Avenue who end up winning Talent Trek (Marc Parc is later to star is his own episode of TPKT), Max & Paddy – bouncers hired for the night as the TV crews are in and Paul le Roy fresh from The Services as one of the nights judges.

What extras does this DVD have? A brilliant commentary, keeps you laughing as much as the show itself! I always remember the comments: "Brian and Marc Park are never on the stage together" "Why? Dont they get on?" Thats not the exact quote... but it was something like that !

What made you laugh out loud. Apart from all of it??!! I loved the early introduction to all of the characters but especially Max & Paddy, what WAS with Max’s hair? And the interaction between Brian and Gerry was a wonderful taster of things to come. Brain Potter as Santa in the “next week” trailer, but it was a shame to see that Peter was overruled when Brian was seen to stand up at the end of the episode as the club burned.

What was your favourite part? There were so many it’s hard to choose, but I have to confess an undying LOVE for the talents of Marc Park, and Park Avenues performance for Talent Trek is sheer brilliance !

Ahhhh excellent review dawneh! Don't worry, I won't tell anyone you did it on sunday night, It can be our little secret! ;)

Well what can I say! This episode is very special for a number of reasons, the best of course it was the really the pilot for what would be later known as pheonix nights which like paddy would say is 'top draw'

It also sheds light on what social clubs where like when i was a boy because like peter I went to a lot of 'do's' there so its kind of sad when you watch it because clubland is dieing out and episodes like this bring back some good memories!

One of my favourite lines from this episode is 'That sh*ts on a cowbell' What is that sound he does?

Oh and were all introduced to max and paddy! Despite max's lack of hair!

Ok I'm just going to make a list of my thoughts of the show;

I'm still slightly disappointed by seeing Brian stand up, as Dawneh said, Peter regrets it being left in. Anyway, I love the whole Talent Trek show, it's so funny especially Michelle Coffee!

We learn in the episode about Brian's past and how he became wheelchair bound.

It was a great beginning for the Phoenix Nights characters, and Max and Paddy are hilarious!

Steve Edge's character is seen briefly in this episode entering the club with his girlfriend, but he'll make a re-appearance later on in The Ice Cream Man Cometh with Mr Softee Top, in which he'll make a reference to this episode. (thumbs up)

Paul Le Roy and his miserable girlfriend make a re-appearance too which is great!

I always laugh out loud at Sheryll Avenue's impression of Manequinn!

this episode is one of my favourites out of that Peter Kay Thing. I think i liked it more because i had seen phoenix nights but only saw that peter kay thing in full this year. In the club is excellant.

Max's hair is the funniest and i like how they come back to jokes in the whole of tpkt.

Like where paddy says he shagged allans wife and allans asking about her in mr softie top

Class episode, great review

Right can someone explain this conversation?

' They had me in ditch in serdinia right, i had a 12 guage with russian mafia up my arse, i tell you it were no picnic my friend, i was supposed to get paid a grand in the hand, i got paid 501 in used rubals...'

If you put the commentry on the dvd apparently peter didn't like it, I'm glad it was left in! Very funny!
