What is the episode about?
This Third episode in the series of ‘That Peter Kay Thing’ is based on an ice cream man known as Mr Softee Top, and his struggle through an ice cream recession, to tempt people to buy his traditional ice cream, and not his rival’s whipped ice cream.
Softee took over the ice cream business from his father, only difference being, whereas his father loved kids, Mr Softee hates them. Softee spends his days driving in his van with Darren his helper, selling ice cream where he can so as to make ends meet, and he doesn’t think twice about appearing at accident sites (which he listens out for on his radio), as he says ‘Where there’s tragedy, there’s trade’.
Softee also makes a bit of extra cash by renting out “adult art” videos to his older customers. One of these customers being Steve Edge’s character, who tells Softee that he has split from his girlfriend because she was sleeping around, and one of the blokes was ‘the bouncer from the Neptune Club’ (reference back to ‘In The Club’, to see Paddy telling Max about this).
In this episode the now famous ‘Ping pong balls’ joke makes it’s first appearance, and we also see Alan from ‘The Services’ again, along with Paul Le Roy!
Things get too much for Mr Softee who towards the end of the episode has a bit of a breakdown and ends up giving his van to Darren to take over.
What extras does this DVD have?
Lots of great things that we have come to know and love from Peter’s dvds, but the best extra has to be the pilot episode ‘The Services’. It’s just a shame that there are no outtakes.
What made you laugh out loud?
Mr Softee has been waiting for Darren to get back with some more ice cream and flakes. But by the time Darren returns, the ice cream has melted and he couldn’t get any flakes so he bought Crunchies instead. Mr Softee gets mad and he throws a big tub of the melted ice cream over a complaining lady customer!
What was your favourite part?
At the end when we learn that Mr Softee has opened an adult video shop called ‘Softys hard Stuff’, but he still advertises ice cream from there! (The shop makes a re-appearance in Phoenix Nights, when Paddy pays a visit).
