What is the episode about?
Episode number four from “That Peter Kay Thing” “The Arena”. The episode is focused on Mathew Kelly a young actor who lives in Manchester and has started a new job at the Manchester Evening Arena. Mathew see’s the job as easy money and to see the concerts for free. The first part of the episode see’s Mathew being briefed by “live sec” on safety through the arena. Mathew and Chris from Live sec are both played by Peter, Sean the other half of live sec is played by neil. As a part of the documentary we see Adina and Carole getting ready for there first concert, they get on a coach that will that them to the arena. There bus driver Utar, played by Peter gets pulled over by the police for speeding when the police find a gun under the seat he gets arrested. Mathew has plans to watch the concert but Sean has different plans and makes Mathew do his shift in the car park. The concert is over and Mathew has missed it all.

What made you laugh out loud?
Many bits for this episode make me laugh out loud mostly clips from live sec. Two of them that spring to mind are the bit at the end when Mathew and the rest of his work mates are checking the arena and Mathew gives Chris and Sean the v’s and Chris goes he’s just give me the v’s and Sean goes I’ll give him the v’s in a minute :lol:. Another funny bit is when it says next week on the arena and live sec is in Germany that just makes me laugh :lol:

What was your favourite part?
My favourite part is the part where Mathew is in training incase there is a fire and Chris and Sean are shouting orders at him :lol:

Awww I just LOVE Matthew in this... he only wants the job to get to see concerts for free and ends up in the car park.... It's also interesting to learn that Peter based a lot of this on his real experience of the job... including the wrong name badge !

the bits i like are:

when matthew has to put the water bottles on stage and gets stage fright lol


and when matthew wants to watch the performance but is sent down to the car park, his boss goes' ive got my eye on you' and matthew says'not too bad yourself!' :lol:

I love the thumb trick that the Live Sec guys teach the new recruits! :lol:

And then they show it to the people in Germany. Oh and what's with the big picture of the d*ck drawn on the board at the end?! :lol:

I love Duncan Beach talking about 'the big boys', meaning the paramedics.

Matthew is adorable though, and my favourite Matthew moment is him getting a photo with Elton John at the end. 'What? He's got a pacemaker!'

ooh yeah!! i forgot about that, also a great moment!

Love this episode! Its one of my faves for the simple fact that its about a minute away from where i work! And yes those steps are a nightmare!

My favourite bit is the whole Utah speech on the coach! That has me in fits everytime i watch it!

The good thing about this episode is that it seems or the more real for the simple fact that it had to be recorded when an actual arena show was on and peter had to be a steward that night! Amazing lol

Couple of questions

Was that the real Elton John at the end?
Whats the song UTAH plays in the coach when he turns the 70's rubbish off! lol

Also i must point out, you have to stick the commentary on towards the end, peter tells a joke that his mate told him and when peter starts giggling i can bet you will be too!

I've always wondered it, because it looks like elton, and peter says its him in the commentray (although he could be joking)

I've always been curious because at the time peter wasn't well known so how the hell did he get elton john to appear on his programme! :lol:

Right now i want you guys to rate this episode out of 10 and give a reason!

I give it a 7, not too many memerable moments in this one to be honest, the only bit that springs to mind is the whole Utah thing. But still a decent episode!

i think a seven is about right kay1....as you said there aren't that many things that i remember that make this episode really special.But still a good episode (thumbs up)

I'm going to have to give it an 8/9 because I love this episode!

I love Matthew's character, the little glances he makes at the camera.
I love the shot of the stewards coming around the corner in matching uniforms.
I love the public coming up to him and asking for directions 'Are you around here?' "No I'm around the other side, I'm a hologram'. :lol:
I love Matthew walking on the stage and waving to the cheering crowd!
I love seeing Utah again
I love Duncan Beach and the Live Sec guys.

I've always loved going to big shows at arenas so it was great seeing the funny side to what goes on backstage. (thumbs up)

My favourite episode is yet to come...ahhhh Leonard :wub:

I still think the arena is good though, But i think if it wasn't for UTAH's bit in the episode it would of succedded as well as it did!

I too thought this was an excellent episode. Good to see Neil Anthony as Chris along with Peter asShaun, Live Sec, it was the first time I recognised him. amazing when you think that all these twists and turns and jokes and funny sayings and so on come from Peter, Neil and Dave.

I had to feel sorry for Matthew (aka Mohammid...lol) missing the show after all that hard work and training.

Daniel Kitson as always brilliant as Duncan Beech the St John's Ambulance man , I love it when he talks about one of his 'gigs' being when the pope came over and he says he got to thinking "if there was a God surely he would have made better seating arrangements or a drop of rain or something.."

Adina and Carol were very funny..poor Adina ending up in Carlisle after getting on the wrong bus..

Great episode..but for me, the best is yet to come...

Yes i couldn't agree more marlene! The best is yet to come, although i think this episode is the one peter enjoyed filming the most!

Theres a blooper when the door of utahs coach opens you can see the cameraman in the reflection!
