wilsonspies - April 23, 2006 11:06 AM (GMT)

Name of the DVD/series: That Peter Kay Thing
Episode Number: Five
Episode Name: Leonard
Length of the episode: 24 mins 21 secs
First Broadcast: 2000
Overall rating out of 5: 5
Main Characters:
What is the episode about?
Leonard de Thomkinson is the longest serving paperboy in Great Britain and the documentary’ is filmed on the day he is to receive a Bolton community Award for this. We see this jovial loving Father Christmas like character on his round, helping old ladies and being matey with a lunatic he calls the Duke who likes to pretend to shoot people and got thrown out of the pie shop later in the programme, and Carl who waves at cars. We are invited by a beckoning crucifix in the window of Leonard’s living room to go into his bedroom and look around at pictures on the wall of his late mum who he loved to bits.
By the way how does the can of Schweppes pour itself out?

We are told about his good ‘friend’ Walter who is on death row in America, shown his ‘Funny nun’, a puppet, who punches for God and we laugh as he tries his CB and are later told it needs an Arial. As the program progresses we see more of Walter on his round and his visit to his hairdresser ‘Auntie’ who attempts to smarten him up for the awards. Her remark about him sums him up “he’s everyone’s friend, but he’s got no friend.” He just loves and embraces life in the most simple of ways and is a very endearing man based on a man Peter Kay himself knew years ago when he worked at a petrol station. The original Leonard died in 1991 and Peter was upset that not many people attended his funeral when he had spent his life FOR other people. I think that while it is very funny, it is also a charming touching tribute to a man who obviously had an impact on a young Peter Kay.
Like all of the episodes there is a reference to Bob Carolgees, but in this one special to Peter, Bob appears to give him his award in person at the end after being introduced by a very pregnant Valerie Sharples (Catherine Tate.) Steve Edge once again appears briefly in this episode escorting ‘Ruth’ (anyone recognise her later appearance in Coronation Street as Cilla Battersby’s best mate?) and Janice Connolly very realistic as a typical Boltonian housewife with her yellow rubber gloves.

We even have ‘Don Perry’ as the newsagent shop owner on an ego trip (no change there then). Of all of the Peter Kay Thing episodes this is my most favourite for many reasons, but above all the deep down tribute it was meant to be to a man who will always mean a lot to Peter, and maybe, just maybe, the real Leonard had at least just one friend who wanted him to be remembered.
What extras does this DVD have?
As said before the dvd has commentary, pilot episode the services, deleted scenes, alternative endings and trailers.
What made you laugh out loud?
So much in it but the part where he talks about Walter wanting to be at one with nature when he comes out of prison and then the quick answer to the question, “do you think he will ever do that” and Leonard replies “No, he’s on death row”, but even funnier was at the end near the credits when Walter turns up on his doorstep to save Leonard’s soul and he says all embarrassed and surprised at Walter being there “do you want a cup of tea first..”
What was your favourite part?
All of it. I absolutely love this episode, the way it’s presented, the way Leonard is portrayed and the way all of the actors pulled together to help Peter pay a moving tribute to a sweet lovable man.

Bit early arn't we? Ah well never mind! The anticipation probably got the better of you!
Fantastic review marlene! Probably the best yet i have to say, I loved the fact you used pictures in your review and thats the first time i've noticed that schweppes can! Thanks for pointing that out!
Well what can i say, this episode is peters finest hour! well 30mins or so!
The writing is fantastic, the acting is fantastic, so many guest stars, catherine tate, ted robbins, bob carolgees, steve edge and of course the wonderful glamorous sex symbol janice connelly! Its just fantastic!
What makes this a special episode is that Leanord is a guy we can all relate to because there is a guy like this in everybodys town who just goes about charity shops, chatting to people and that.
Its a really moving episode aswell, I think peter should of got an award for portraying Leanard because he played him with such emotion and love in a way its kind of sad to see him living in that tiny flat all on his own!
The jokes are brill! A couple of my favourites are...
B*stard just stuck a tandy catalouge in last week
Excuse me do you have any poppers? Yer there over there, pure gold, blow yer t*ts off!
Right i'll have these then and that twix!
Basically all the shop diolouge is funny!
Listen to the commentarry aswell, Its so good, when peter says 'smackhead special' about the bus station cafe its just hilarious and has everybody in stictches, including the viewer!
All in all, probably everybodys favourite, and the best episode of the series!

Hi Kay1 and everyone
Yes I know I'm a bit early but I had written it and loaded the pics onto Photobucket and with the hectic few days up in London with baby Max coming out on Tuesday, you cna imagine. I was up there Friday and yesterday but decided today that enough was enough, I'm not struggling along with all the runners, I did my own marathon yesterday and walked from the Tower Hill (where the bridge is) to Liverpool Street cos the trains weren't working on the circle line. Old Nana is too old for this!
Anyway I thought play safe and post it now and it's done. Gald it is Ok for you, I loved doing it.
I love commentries as well, they add a whole new dimension don't they?
Love
Marlene

I love his painting on the wall, the paint by numbers one that he had to use other colours for because there was no blue paint in the pack. But he still won the competition for it! (thumbs up)
It's so sad when he's having his hair done and the lady says 'your mum would be proud'. And when Leonard is getting ready in his best suit and says 'I wish my mum was here.' Awwww I just want to give him a hug!
I just adore the commentary as well, there's one bloke that randomly started talking to Peter as he was walking down the street as Leonard, so Peter said he just had to chat back to him! Watch the episode with the commentary to see who I mean. Oh and theres another bloke that went up to him and asks him if he wants him to pray with him, that was another random bloke off the street!
Ian - April 23, 2006 10:35 PM (GMT)

I like when Ruth arrives at the awards night and Leonard goes over to say hello and tries really hard to kiss her on the mouth!
Then he asks her how her stomach has been, infront of her date, because she's been 'loose'. But a bit of quiche will sort it out apparently. :D

Awww that would be so cool!
To have the same format, with andrew sachs narrating again, but with completely new characters and situations! I'd love that!
wilsonspies - April 26, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
Have to say one thing though...how come 'Auntie' looks years younger than Leonard? I mean she must have been a slip of a thing, if born at all when Leonards mum was trying for a baby...or was Leonard young but looked old.
She was gorgeous though and so typical of the 'Auntie's' of old.
That hairdressing in the living room, I remember when I was going to my brother-in-law's wedding in Kearsley where some of this was filmed (opposite Wilsons pies as it happens) and it was in the 90's but it was a hairdressers tardis and I felt like I had stepped into the sixties. She had hairnets hanging up and she rolled my hair up and backcombed it and it was all puffed out and fluffy, then the rock hard hairspray. Took a fortnight to wash it out. Like a brick it was on my head! I did look well! lol
That scene in Leonards reminded me of that!
Love
Marlene
Johnny - April 27, 2006 07:35 AM (GMT)
I was gonna mention that actually marlene! It was weird because she did look very young to be leonards auntie, then again i suppose she must of been little when he was born!
I also find it amazing that leonards skin dsn't have a wrinkle on it! He must moisterise a lot!
