Main Characters?
The usual suspects are here. Brian Potter (Peter Kay) – owner of the Phoenix Club, compere Jerry St Clair (Dave Spikey), hapless bouncers Max and Paddy (Peter Kay and Patrick McGuinness), resident DJ Ray Von (Neil Fitzmaurice), Les and Alan AKA Les Alanos (Toby Foster and Steve Edge), Young Kenny (Justin Moorhouse), Kenny Senior (Archie Kelly), Holy Mary (Janice Connolly) and Marion (Beatrice Kelley).
What’s the episode is about:
This episode opens with a normal night of Bingo at the Phoenix Club, but before they can start it’s time for some music. Cue Ray Von and his latest contraption – a DJ station with integrated smoke machine, which in Phoenix Club tradition goes haywire, necessitating the rapid evacuation of the patrons from the Phoenix. Ray ‘fixes’ the smoke machine and titles roll. This episode marks the departure of The Captain (Ced Beaumont), who dies during the taster, with Brian, Jerry, Paddy, Les, Alan and Kenny Senior trying to decide how to deal in the least ‘liable’ way with the body. We then get a funeral scene that is both touching and amazingly funny, the somber atmosphere broken by the inappropriate ‘Das Boot’ fruit machine going off during a WW2 anecdote. In a complete change of atmosphere we cut to the bar and two lads pinching the club TV and getting away with it because, in Kenny Senior’s words “They were wearing overalls”, followed by the introduction of the Bucking Bronco (which’ll come in handy later!!) by Eric and sold to Brian with an aeroplane with “One previous owner!!”. We have a bit more Bingo, with another one of Ray’s contraptions going insane and then, while Jerry is looking for Ray, the flash of inspiration ready for the second half!!! Cue the commercial break!!!
We return to the Phoenix with a close up of a poster – yes!! It’s Wild West Night at the Phoenix. Max and Paddy on the door as usual, the Bucking Bronco doing the business in the Jockey Wilson Suite, a Wild West inspired menu, and the cabaret act Wild Bill (played by Rodney Litchfield) and Trigger earning their stripes in the Galaxy Lounge, followed by line dancing and a heavily biased gun fight between old rivals which causes a little bit of friction, culminating in a rather appropriate barroom brawl. All this is intercut with another discussion between Max and Paddy about Paddy’s ‘hair loss’. This episode also features an entertaining scene involving Trigger let loose in the Jockey Wilson Suite. There’s much more to be said about this episode and it’s hard to review this without giving the good bits away. As usual it’s a laugh-riot from start to finish, but needless to say the night ends in a police van as the credits roll!! This weeks audition?? An escape artist …… who struggles to escape!!!
What extras does this DVD have?
Thousands – OK, maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement, but there really is something for everyone. In no particular order we have VERY entertaining commentaries featuring the vocal (and comedic) talents of Peter Kay, Neil Fitzmaurice, Dave Spikey and Patrick McGuinness, fabulous outtakes in “It’ll Be Alright On The Phoenix Nights”, Armchair Super Store product excerpts, a selection of deleted scenes (again with commentary from Peter Kay) a little behind the scenes documentary “One Man & His Horse” about ‘Trigger’, the equine star of episode two, and his handler and trailers for the show.
Are the extras good?
Oh yes. I know I’ve watched the outtakes several times and still found myself laughing!! The same can be said of One Man and His Horse, and the commentaries are ALWAYS a hit.
What made you laugh out loud?
It’s cruel and it made me wince in the process, but Peter Kay running headlong into a closed door and breaking a rib in the process was quite funny for all the wrong reasons. The phrase suffering for your art springs to mind bless ‘im!! Trigger in the Jockey Wilson suite also made me crack a smile. And Max and Paddy’s reaction to the furore that breaks out in the Galaxy Lounge during the gunfight is priceless.
What was your favourite part?
It’s hard to pinpoint one thing that stands out as a favourite part. There are some fantastic lines that qualify, but it would mean reciting the whole script from start to finish.
