Name of the DVD/series: Max & Paddy’s Road To Nowhere Series One
Episode Number: One
Episode Name: Sailors
Length of the episode: 23:50
Overall rating out of 5: 5 (4 if I have to listen to Colin and Edith!! Yes it spoils it THAT much for me!!;))
Main Characters?
As the name suggests this is the Adventures of Max & Paddy, so Max (Peter Kay) and Paddy (Patrick McGuinness) with a little help in this episode from Gypsy Joe, Tracey and Louise (The Belgrano Sisters) and a couple of bear costumes!!
What’s the episode is about:
This episode is the opener for the series which sees our two favourite doormen on the run after their ‘hit’ in Pheonix Nights goes pear-shaped!!
We open with the infamous motor home arriving on the docks to get a Plasma screen from Gypsy Joe. When he doesn’t have any they wind up dressed up in bear costumes dancing outside Toymaster (spot Susan and Deidre in the crowd!!! ;)). But this is a front as they take the opportunity to lift one from a shopping centre while Joe provides the diversion, posing as a couple of St John’s Ambulance types to make their escape. Unfortunately when Max sets it up they realize it lacks speakers!!!
After a slight domestic, Max and Paddy decide a night out should be on the cards and head out to a club (filled with sailors no less!!!) to try and pull. Almost works until Max starts dancing, so the following day Paddy decides to show him how it’s done. Cue all kinds of hilarity and embarrassment as he teaches him the finer points with multiple references, if you can spot them, to Dirty Dancing, Footloose, and I think I spotted a bit of Karate Kid in there too!!! They don sailor’s uniforms and head out to the club to try again, and pick up a couple of girls who aren’t all that they seem. Paddy wakes up the next morning having been spiked and robbed, by, according to Gypsy Joe, the Belgrano sisters just out of prison. Max and Paddy head back to the club to get back what was stolen from Paddy and, so they don’t get sent down again, the girls agree to do one last thing for the lads – nope, not that ;) – dress up as bears and get some speakers for the Plasma.
As the credits roll, Paddy ‘relieves’ himself to Charlie’s Anals, while Max sleeps – much to his dismay!!!
What extras does this DVD have?
In no particular order we have special guest commentaries, a photo stills gallery, a variety of outtakes, deleted scenes and trailers.
Are the extras good?
Yay and nay. As I’ve said before outtakes are always good, as are the stills, but the guest commentaries I find irritating. There is no sign of Peter or Paddy which is a shame judging by the quality and popularity of the Phoenix Nights commentaries. If they did it again I’d want the stars doing the commentaries rather than people who have nothing to do with the show. But that’s just my humble opinion.
What made you laugh out loud?
Again, it’s funny for all the wrong reasons – I’m beginning to think I have a sick sense of humour, but the bit that cracks me up every time is during the dance scene where they are doing a Dirty Dancing-esque twirl on a pipe – the rest I think you know!!!! ;) Paddy’s chat-up lines are hilarious (especially the one that never made the cut!!! ), oh and the motor home’s number plate -- BOL 10X -- FAB!!!
What was your favourite part?
Teaching Max to dance was a hit, Paddy in uniform, the infamous gratuitous bum shot, the very last scene involving ‘Charlie’s Anals’ -- after all “Paddy has needs!!!”, the reactions of the passing family every time they see Max and Paddy doing something suspect, and their sweet little dance routine in the club!!! Good movers those two!!
