"AN ARRAY of top comic talent, including Phoenix Nights’ Justin Moorhouse and Barbara Nice, has been lined up to play at the Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival.

The week-long festival kicks off on Monday with a dazzling cabaret show featuring Manchester’s Jonathon Mayor and priest-turned-comic Alfie Joey.

On Tuesday spoof German techno band Die Clatterschenkenfietermaus play, followed by Malawian comic Daliso Chaponda at the Mr Lynch venue in Jesmond.

Also appearing on a laughter-packed Tuesday are Al Pitcher and Steve Williams, while Newcastle’s Long Live Comedy provides the best fresh material from the region at the Dog & Parrot, on Times Square.

The Funny Bones Comedy Best New Comedian of the Year competition takes place in Benton on Wednesday, compered by Warren Speed.

The pick of Thursday’s entertainment sees Rhod Gilbert perform his hilarious Knockin On Heaven’s Door show at Caedmon Hall. Gilbert is a rising comic star who has already been lined up for a radio series. Other highlights include Justin Moorhouse, fresh from his stint on The Charlotte Church Show, Bob Doolally’s Soccer Balls and stand-up from Ian Cognito, Martin Bigpig and Anvil Springstien.

On Friday Vladimir McTavish’s A Brief History of Scotland is followed by material from Reg D Hunter, Jason Manford and Dave Johns.

Barbara Nice, better known to many as Phoenix Nights’ Holy Mary (and a great stand-up in her own right) plays the Saville Exchange and John Scott proves his northern credentials with a performance of A Scot in Newcastle at the Dog & Parrot.

The festival goes out with a bang on Sunday as top London comedian Robin Ince showcases his cutting wit. He will be joined by a lineup of the best comedic talent in the North East, including Steffen Peddie and Sarah Millican.
