"Aladdin @ The Lowry
Natalie Anglesey
FESTIVE FUN: Casey-Lee Jolleys, Bill Ward and Cleveland Campbell
THIS is the last of the big Christmas shows to open with fans of Coronation Street and Emmerdale packed into the Lyric Theatre to see their telly favourites in action.
After three and a half years playing Weatherfield's bullying builder Charlie Stubbs, actor Bill Ward trades one baddie for another and plays Abanazer, Aladdin's wicked uncle with relish and a little bit of magic.
Bolton resident, Casey-Lee Jolleys, the phoney Thai bride Orchid in The Street, plays the lovely Princess Yasmin and looks and sounds good.
She's partnered by young David Flynn as Aladdin who has a pleasant personality and a good singing voice.
Emmerdale fans roared their approval for Cleveland Campbell, who was Danny Daggart, and now plays the cool Genie of the Lamp, complete with iPod, text messages and an American accent.
But the real star of the show for many was Stockport comedienne Barbara Nice, whom you'll recognise from Phoenix Nights. She is a very funny, down to earth Slave of the Ring and the audience absolutely loved her performance.Flying Carpet
This Pele Production had spectacular scenery, including a magical Flying Carpet as well as a transported palace.
But some of the cast need to tighten up a bit on cues as they seem to be waiting for laughs that didn't come. However that's easily remedied.
The real pity is that the music appeared to be recorded and the dancers often forgot to sing along. However the principals who sang live performed well although the ballads fitted in better than the thumping chart-topping hits and in your face choreography.
Nevertheless, the audience had a ball and this pop musical version of the story of Aladdin had some of them dancing on their feet at the end.
Definitely worth the price of a ticket.
Aladdin is on at The Lowry until Sunday, January 7. £10 - £24. Call the Box Office on 0870 060 1768 for tickets or

And best wishes from me and the little Maxster as well Barbara. Little Maxwell is my grandson. named, after Maxwell Bygraves, and was born with just half a functioning heart and is waiting for a transplant. You'll see him dotted all over the forum as our friends here spoil him rotten.
Hope you have a fantastic 2007 and hope we can look forward to seeing you on screen very soon.

Hi. I'm new to the forum.
I've just watched series 1 and 2 of phoenix nights in about 3 days!
Watched em before but wanted to watch em again!
Anyway... What I would love to know is what happened to the fantastic Beatrice Kelley (Maureen) after series 1?
I think she's brilliant in everything she's done, but was disappointed to see her replaced in 2nd series. And, even more annoyingly, if you look carefully at Brian looking at the photo of the staff of the Phoenix club at the start of series 2, Beatrice has been deleted and replaced by the new character! That's a bit harsh.
I've scoured the net and this forum, and cant find anything about it. Seems strange how she's the only character who didn't sign up for series 2! I wonder if she'll be in series 3?
Sorry I've posted it here - it won't let me start a new topic for some reason.
Thanks! stu pid

Hi Daz!! (I take it you're a Daz -- if not say so!! ;)) Someone with good taste!! ;)
Welcome to the board. Nice to see you getting stuck in already. I'm afraid I can't tell you why Beatrice didn't come back because I ...don't ...... know, but welcome anyway.
The 'not being able to post' thing isn't anything personal, we've had trouble with Spammers and at the moment this is the only way we've found we can stop it!!! However, you can post elsewhere, as you've probably gathered, so I suggest adding your twopenneth to
"I Know Who Y'Are",
Where In The World Are You, and
Member Pics if you're that way inclined and because we like to know who we're talking to!! (thumbs up) Nah. We're just dead nosey really!!! ;)
DazzaMc - January 20, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
Ah, right. If it stops spammers then I don't mind! They're flooding forums aren't they?
I hope someone knows about beatrice. I'm surprised actually that noone really mentions her on here... She's not in the ' favourite characters ' bit.
I guess she did have a smallish part, but I think she was perfect for the role. She could read the phone book and I'd laugh. I find her endearing!
I think we need a new topic just for her :)
Han - January 20, 2007 10:50 PM (GMT)
offt Favourite Characters?? Where's that?? If you're referring to this section, again it's nowt personal. We try to give each member of the cast attention but some are more active than others and what they do is more 'out there' so to speak. I didn't realise she was in Ideal until I caught a rerun the other night. It's just the way the cookie crumbles. However if you do hear anything about what she's up to feel free to share it with us. We don't intentionally snub people over here -- we're too nice for that!! ;)
DazzaMc - January 21, 2007 12:23 AM (GMT)
She's in Ideal? I love that programme!
She was on eyes down too, which was rubbish of course.
And she was on My parents are aliens, apparently.

She was -- don't know if it was a one-off or what, but I caught it while channel-hopping! ;)
We're going rapidly off topic here, which is something we try to avoid, so I'll start off a Beatrice topic for you!!! ;)
