Title: Random oneshots
Description: to while away those long summer evenings
nerulean - June 24, 2007 12:06 PM (GMT)
How many times have we said 'wouldn't it be fun if...', and then never got round to actually playing the result because of the normal campaigns running, or the sheer silliness of it? I think the answer is many.
Well, now we've got a whole load of free time, and it did seem as if a lot of people would be around sunny Egham for at least a portion of the holiday, so how about bringing some of those ideas back up for a couple of random oneshots? I remember some ideas being thrown around as potential third term campaigns, and we came up with a couple more in the silly hours of this morning.
How about an aquatic game where the ranger can get that shark animal companion he's always had his eye on, or even where you play aquatic races? Or perhaps we could brush the dust off our epic munchkins and great wyrms and attempt to beat the phenomenally overpowered thirty-headed tarrasque that someone created for the WotC website? How about (my personal favourite) a game where we create weird creatures with as many level adjustments and as few class levels as possible and square them off against the absolute bog standard class NPCs from the DMG? Maybe we could try roleplaying against one another, either by pitting our characters directly against one another in a fight, or by having the same DM run the same adventure for two different small groups and seeing which one does best?
These are just a couple of ideas, and I'm sure between us we could think of all sorts of others. I think it'd be a fun chance for us to play something different that we wouldn't normally do. We'd need some DMs, and I'd be happy to run a couple of them since I need the practice. Some of them might even work with group DMing to let everyone who wants to play along.
So, whaddya think, and when are people around?
scotskevin - June 24, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
Great idea. I'm around all summer, and would be happy to provide a venue if such is required.
Got a couple of things I've always wanted to try.......
neondragon - June 24, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
A fantastic idea, if just to while away the empty time. And I should be able to be around from august 10th onwards
nerulean - June 24, 2007 03:08 PM (GMT)
To answer my own question, I can be around from the first couple of days in July, though I will probably have to spend a couple of weeks in the middle of the holiday back up north again. I'll let you know if and when I get actual dates.
Charamei - June 24, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
Sounds fun, and it's not as if I'm doing anything until I get a job - I could always come up for games :P
I'm not really around for August, though - NoWriMo calls.
Mordax_Praetorian - June 24, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
I'm leavng on wednesday but I'll be back on the 10th of August
I'd love to do a 1 shot of the Aliens system I found at some point after that

Aliens late in August sounds good.
scotskevin - June 24, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
Just a quick change to my availability. I'll be in Scotland fot a long weekend in July, leaving on Wednesday 11th and back on Monday 16th.
Other than that I'd be available most of the time.
Ajwz - June 27, 2007 02:05 PM (GMT)
Well I'm back sometime in august, but I doubt many people are going to be available at any given time.
scotskevin - June 27, 2007 02:40 PM (GMT)
Depends how many we need. If we're lookihg for say 4 players and 1 DM minimum, then with Matt and Dave around and available if they're doing nothing else, we should be able to get the numbers.
Azathoth - June 27, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
I could run a Watership Down style game with players as animals with challenge rating <1/2.

Why not run it in the Watership down RPG system called Bunnies and Burrows? No idea where you can get it from, but it's been ported to GURPs.
Ozzie Dave - June 29, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
Hmm, sounds fun. But I can see this descending into a 'Gooddies' type situation where one of us becomes 'big bunny' (For most of you this is well before your time so maybe only Kev and Chris will get the reference).

For a one-shot a "Goodies" type scenario could be quite fun.

Thinking of a change fron D&D,would anyone be up for a one-shot Twilight 2000 or Shadowrun?

I think you answered your own question :P. I have no idea where to get it from either
themadone - June 29, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
That's only cos I haven't looked very hard :)
scotskevin - June 29, 2007 05:15 PM (GMT)
So, when do we have the first one ? Possibly next week or the week after. When are people free ?
And what should we do ?
nerulean - July 1, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
I'd be up for something at some point in the next two weeks Has anyone got anything they want to run in that time period?
(Also, I have internet access! That was unexpected!)
scotskevin - July 1, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
There's a diceless SF I've been wantig to run, and if there aren't many players, possibly the Dr Who RPG that's been sitting on my shelf for far too long.
neondragon - July 2, 2007 01:55 AM (GMT)
If you ever need an extra person, I can always come up for the day.
I've got nothing better to do.
nerulean - July 2, 2007 04:14 PM (GMT)
Why don't you DM our first game, then, Kev?
If I arbitrarily suggest, say, Thursday, how many people would we get? If Thursday's a no-go, how about Wednesday? Both of those would be fine for me.
scotskevin - July 2, 2007 04:23 PM (GMT)
Thursday evening sounds good. Say about 7pm.
scotskevin - July 4, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
Ok. It's going to be a Dr Who one-shot on Thursday.
scotskevin - July 4, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
We could also do a one-shot at the weekend if anyone was interested.
nerulean - July 10, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
I'll be running a oneshot at mine this Thursday at 7ish for anyone who wants to come along: PM me if you don't know where it is. I'll be playtesting some of the homebrew classes for my Anara campaign, and if anyone's interested in looking at some of the background of it beforehand then the beginnings of the campaign website are up
here.
Mordax_Praetorian - July 11, 2007 08:01 AM (GMT)
I'll deffinitly be running an Aliens one after I get back, my brother is even going to arrange to stay with me for a few days to play it
scotskevin - August 6, 2007 03:52 PM (GMT)
Since we should have a few people back, how about one some day next week.
Ajwz - August 12, 2007 11:49 AM (GMT)
Andrew's brother > Andrew
nerulean - August 14, 2007 12:33 AM (GMT)
I'll be back sometime on Thursday afternoon depending on the trains, and rather fancy a game of some sort. Anyone feel up to taking on the DM mantle for something?
scotskevin - August 14, 2007 07:39 AM (GMT)
I can do something, if there are enough players around.
Mordax_Praetorian - August 14, 2007 11:25 AM (GMT)
I'll get right on to familliarising myself with the Aliens rules so we can have a game of that at some point

We should have more than enough willing players, by the end of this week, to run a fairly good sized game.

Ok, who's up for one, say Friday night.

Yup, sounds good to me too! Where and when?

scotskevin - August 17, 2007 07:06 AM (GMT)
How about 7ish at mine. As to what, I could do a diceless session, unless anyone has any better ideas.
Mordax_Praetorian - August 19, 2007 11:50 AM (GMT)
So the Aliens site is back up, I have the rules for it, its all very exciting, and it'll be ready to go for Thursday
