Title: Fable
Description: The loveliest RPG I know

CoughCoughShitShit - March 20, 2008 07:48 PM (GMT)
This game is pretty old, but I just noticed what a jewel it is. See, I got it free when I bought my XBOX, and since I never really was interested in RPGs that much, I tossed it in the corner along with heaps of demo discs. I was wrong.

Now, its been 3-4 years, I cant remember since then. And only now I realize what an amazing game it is. I call it, the GTA of RPGs, because you can basically do EVERYTHING in it. You'll say, hey, Oblivion and Gothic beat it any time, but something about this game makes it stand out.

Im going to try to make a list of all the stuff you can do as best I can.

First of all, you start your hero's life as a boy in the land of Albion. Now, most of the game revolves around good and evil, doing good things or bad things. So, in most situations, you'll have the option if you want to do something the good way or the bad way. When you leave your childhood behind you enter Teenage life, which is basically just when you train in the heroe's guild, more of a tutorial stage of the game. The game really begins when you reach adulthood. From there and on, everything is in your hands.

You get renown for the good things you do (quests, helping people out, saving them from monsters), but also for the bad things (bad quests like helping out villains, killing innocent people, etc.) If you get lots of good renown and become good people clap when you enter town, follow you around, children cheer, chicks fall in love with you. If you are bad people run away from you, children are afraid, people call you 'my lord' (but you can be made fun of, it depends on your scariness or attractiveness--more later) Here are things you can do:

-If you see people on a road being attacked by lets say bandits, and you kill the bandits, you become more good and gain renown.

-You can do good quests, fighting for good, or bad quests, like helping bandits.

-You can show off trophies you got from quests, like a Hydra's tooth (and then a little mini game starts, 'how many people can you show your trophy to within the time limit') That will earn you renown depending on what trophies you show off. If you show off a trader's head, you will earn bad renown and people won't like you very much.

-You can alter your appearance. Go to a barber and get a new hairstyle or beard. Get some tatoos. Those affect your scariness (which will make people fear you) and your attractiveness (which will make them love you). Also almost every set of armor or clothing exists in regular, bad and good. Shit, lemme rephrase that. For example, you have plate armor? That basically won't affect scariness or attractiveness. But you can get Bright plate armor, which will increase your attractiveness, or Dark Plate armor, which will increase your scariness. Also, if you max out your evilness, you will grow horns, your eyes will glow red, you'll have red mist around you'll be followed by flies. That makes you VERY scary. I don't know what happens if you max out your goodness though, ive never been that good, MUHAHA!

-You can eat (wow) but theres more to it. Food will heal you, but if for example you eat a food like a crunchy chick, you'll become more evil. For obvious reasons I guess. Also, the more you eat, the fatter you get. Lets see that happen in the Witcher!

-You can fish! With a fishing rod. Its a little mini game, and in the end you earn a fish which you can eat OR an item. I even caught a boot once.

-You can dig up treasures with a spade!

-You can hire mercenairies to fight by your side!

-You can level up (no shit). But its not a shitty im a level 45 archer system , its way less cheesy. If you level up in strength, your hero grows older and if he gets real old he'll get white hair. If you level up in Will you'll, uh, look older and, uh, more magical.

-You can give offerings in chapels. If you go to the Chapel of Skorm (the evil god) you can offer human sacrifices (trick people into following you into the chapel) and as a reward you'll become more evil. If you go to the Temple of Avo (the good god) you can donate money and earn goodness.

-You can kill people randomly! Yey! You'll become more evil for that.

-You can rob houses! You can pick the house locks and creep in when the owners are sleeping and steal all their stuff or kill them and buy their house. When you've bought it you can upgrade it or rent it out (or sell it of course). If the house has trophy cases, you can put some trophies in em and so when you rent'em out you can get more money.

-You can use emotes (expressions)! If you are evil you can say stuff like SHIT or do a vulgar thrust (or point the rude finger at people).

-You can get married! Find a woman, buy her gifts (like chocolates, rubies, diamonds, perfume), flirt, use expressions. Then when you're ready to get married you can give her a wedding ring and move into a house you own. You can even marry a man or more than 10 women at a time, but you'll need to own one seperate house for each to live in. And if you flirt with someone else in front of your wife she gets jealous and buys you expensive gifts like armor! You can make her follow you to a bedroom, flirt with her and eventually have sex! You even get a dowry when you marry. Don't expect to marry though if you're scariness is high.

-There are lots of spells you can cast.

-You can cut people's heads off in combat! Then others will stare at his head and say 'oh, i can't look!'

-You can play mini games at taverns like Blackjack and much more.

-There's these doors called demon doors that tell you they'll only open if you do what they tell you to do, which is pretty fun.

-You can fight in the Arena!

Theres lots more that I just cant remember since theres so freaking much.

Oblivion stole LOTS of its ideas from Fable. For example the Arena (its almost the same in Oblivion as it is in Fable), lockpicking, going to jail (theres a part in the game where you go to jail which reminded me a lot of Oblivion).

There arent SO many weapon types and bows and armor and clothes as in other RPGs, but hey, I never liked it when there were waaaay too many, it just got boring collecting all of them. And at least the 'Legendary' rare swords in Fable are cool and don't all look the same like in Oblivion, where tons of swords have the same 3d model and textures but just have a different name. Also there aren't that many monster types and the land of Albion is much smaller that Cyrodiil, but what the hell, I enjoyed it much more than Oblivion, this choice making method. Besides, Fable was made way before. Thanks for reading and for your time, i think this game really deserves more attention than it got. Its the most magical and rewarding RPG Ive ever played. Ever. And deserves a spot in the 10 best RPGs ever made.

Here are screenshots (Id post my own, but since I have this game on XBOX, ill just put stuff from google).

Ask Voodooman :P

Wow, you really LOVE this game. Strangley enough, I also have it for the Xbox and have barely played it, although after reading your post, I think I probably should give it another go.

I usually give a game 2 hours tops to see if it grabs me, but this didn't . Then again neither did the Ocarina of Time initially, and I was kicking myself a couple of years later when I finally did get into it. It was the fishing that grabbed me! A had a go playing a friends saved game, and when I discovered you could actually go fishing I was gobsmacked, anyways, sorry for veering off the subject of your post ;)

There are many hidden or forgotten gems like this, I posted a few of mine a couple of weeks back, but only a few poisted theirs.

That game on Xbox was a pearl but the PC version outshine it(visually and gameplay wise). That game gave me good laughs shame it was too short even on the Pc version which had new chapters.
i loved the prison's morning jogging in underwear and its warden with his annoying poetry XD! I just hope the Fable 2 on x360 will live up to my expectations.Peter molyneux is great but sometimes he hypes a bit too much his creations <_<

CoughCoughShitShit - March 20, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
@Satyr: Haha yes!

''Its painfully obvious that you have on interest in my arts. My lyrical opus is wasted on your felistine ears. Back to the cell with you!''

The game WAS a bit short, but there's lots of stuff to do and many secrets to uncover, some of which haven't even been discovered yet!

And for some reason I don't wish I had gotten The Lost Chapters on PC (even though its got more stuff). I guess that if you play something on one console you get used to it and think it'll suck on every other one. Like PC.

Here's what I mean

@rufusbezak: That's exactly how I felt, lost interest when I first played it but kicked myself up the ***** when I realized how great it was.
I really do love it.

i waited till lost chaptesr came to pc and waited for the price to drop, console port and all. then i just ended up downloading it cause i'm broke lol.

its easily one of the best games made of its genre, i dont think its that short, mainly xcause it takes forever to level up fully and the spells are great to get, i used top get the evil version of that ground sigil magic attack that dioes a shitload of damage at once, great for the first few levels of the area esopecially, and excellent against balverines. then i realied lightning gives more exp and worked on that and chain it up. took me age sto get skorms bow but its easily one of the best weapons in the game.

dont know what the point in the secret weapons was actually, none are actually that good by the time you get them, uless you never level up or buy anything. hell the solus sword from the town near the academy is better than the swrod of aeons...fun to try and get hem all though.

There were that crazy pistol mod on the pc version, that thing was able to shoot the shock waves of jack of blades (in the final fight) It was crazy to use that thing.

el-b - March 20, 2008 11:09 PM (GMT)
want?

need it more like..link me:P

so its a bow that shoots jacks, or a gun that shots shockwaves like the ones he uses?

jack of blades is one of the coolest villains i've ever seen, i love how they did his voice, and its great how he taunts you all the way through lost chapters when you progress on the soul key. i did each version to see what he said. looks metal too. i think they cool thing about skorms bow is that it has that reb gem thing over the arm, but here sthe easiest way to get it if you didnt know.

1. get some jewgold
2.slaughter the fuck out of knothole glade.
3.jew everyone out of rent money
4.make a bazillion donations to avo and become good ash, then put on the bright plate armour, its hard to find some parts of it, they are on traders in the dark wood thing between oakvale and the academy.
5. get loads of followers from the academy and march them to skorms chapel.
6.slaughter the fuck out of the followers (skorms rope engine is nice thsi time of year), this will kill your evil rating fast, so avo up again by jewing more glade dwellers (and slaughter guards while there for the lulz)
7. repeat ad verbatim,. you'll get the sentinel mace before you get the bow, the mace is poo and fail, the bow is win and evil.
8 try and find cheat to steal from avo fountain:)

Hey CoughCoughShitShit, I dunno if your aware, but The Lost Chapters is available for the Xbox also. I've just 'aquired' it for the PC though, and just got done onverting it to a DVD image :D

I hope my interest doesn't wane again. From what you lads have said, it sounds like a great game if you can get steeped in it.

Satyr's been on a real Ken Shiro bender these past few days! :D
Great stuff

EDIT: Gave it another couple of hours, still hasn't grabbed me yet, to much tedium, I'm gonna stick with it this time though! The gfx look pristine on the PC version :D

I get a weird glitch when I look/move around though, the screeen sorta tears in the middle, like a cracked pane of glass. It's only very slight, but it bugs me!

lavitz 1125 - March 22, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
i got fable and fable the lost chapters in one of my superd up games i got 58 combat multyplier (cant spell  )

el-b - March 22, 2008 02:22 AM (GMT)
if you use lightning you can go way beyond that in the arena, theres a demion door that wants a multiplier of like, 15 or something and you can only do it by slowing time down and using other magics, its at that hobb cave at greatwood, i've never got in there, gave up when i was one off the needed amount lol...too much effort.

Nope. He wants combat multiplyer of at least 14. Easiest way:

1)If you've beaten the game there should be a troll outside the greatwood caves. Go there and kill him. This is incredibly easy with sword of aeons.
2)Enter hobbe cave. Some multiplyer will have gone away, but you'll get that back. Kill all the hobbes in the main 'hallway' in hobbe cave. Rush out of there.
3)The troll should have respawned now. Kill him and talk to the demon door, your multiplyer should be high enough by now.

And rufusbezak, Lost Chapters exists on XBOX??? Hmm...

Cro-Cop Leon - March 24, 2008 05:12 PM (GMT)
I played the game and beaten it 2 times, got everything unlocked for PC.
Very good game, but its not so free.
I know it has a Arena or Jail but this comes as a part of the story not your free will, and when you beat the game you cant do much stuff then. and you cant go to arena anymore. Well for a story based game its one of the best. And you cant compare Oblivion to this because they are different.
Oblivion:Free open game, do whatever you want to, you choose your true path.(And if u download 1 mod, there u get the best game)
Fable:Action RPG with very good story, follows the life of a boy who lost everything, choose between good and evil.
Well i cant say Oblivion is better or Fable, they both are great.
Oh and i was a good guy in fable, got a far better sword then Sword of Aeons,Its called The Tear of Avo, you get it when you beat Jack and destroy Sword of Aeons. You must search it thought, its located in a tomb, in Heroes Guild.

el-b - March 24, 2008 05:28 PM (GMT)
the main added part is battling jack again after the ending of the game, where you have to go to the icy continent, dont know the name, there is a lot added into the game extra and i dont know what exactly since i only played that one version, but its all integrated into rthe plot, the arena champion couldnt go back anyway really cause hes already number1 lol, let someone else have a go. once you complete it you cant do anything at all, its not ocarina of time or anything.

I never understood... Does the guild only fall apart if you decide to kill your sister? Because all the doors are blocked by fallen rocks now, and I killed Theresa. And did the guild master die? If he did, why do i still here 'hero, your will is low', 'hero, your health is low-do you have any potions, or food?' 'try to get your combat multiplyer EVEN highter'.

el-b - March 24, 2008 06:49 PM (GMT)
tear of avo is exactly the same as the swor dof aeons, its designed so you still get a good sword even if you be a goodie, i prefer to soa since its got two parralel blades, looks far better.

cough cough, my dad pays more attention than you in games lol, hes still alive and can be optionally raeped in lost chapters to open the bronze gate witch looks fucking awesome, esecially as you move closer to it. the academy was all but destroyed and the world hammered by jacks minions at the end of fable 1.0 so theres a reason the academys all clogged up.

I haven't got the lost chapters. If he's alive, where the f**k is he?

And I asked about what happened to the guild because I was always too evil to open the demon door there, and I never got to open the silver chest either. And I think there's something I didn't get from guild woods too. So...did I miss anything big? <_<
