Title: Gears Of War Architecture
Description: Looking for artwork or actual textures?
rufusbezak - March 25, 2008 12:01 AM (GMT)
I was wondering if anyone here knows of anywhere I can get renderings of the buildings exteriors and/or interiors, even artworks. Info on where they sourced the textures, or basically anything related to the creation of the games look. Everything in the game all looked very Gothic & eastern European. I could swear some even looked like recognisable buildings and locations, but I suspect it was just coincidence. I probably spent more time gazing at the beautiful architecture than I did the enemies! :P
Is there any way to convert or view the textures direct?
Cheers in advance for any help ;)
EDIT: I found this nice FREE Bioshock Artbook while searching for GoW stuff.

well the pc version does come with the editor used to make the game, if you can convert things from unreal editors of the past you can do it with the gears one, since its also an unreal engine game.
you need to learn how to use the unreal editor to a basic degree then find a way or premade thing to extract the textures and models you want.

Cheers mate, I never knew that ;)
Do you know where the editors exe is ? I can't seem to find it!
Not a good start, and probably a bad sign also I guess
I'm crap at stuff like this.

havent got it installed anymore, had to remove it to play that pos blacksite (10 gig, 2dvds...4 hours of gameplay with six guns...seriously, and the preloader was about 32x30 stretched to full screen, real lazy piece of crap)
only just freed up enough on my comp to put it back and i'm scared to lol, took me well over an hour to install last time, but i do know the editior is installed seperately, either as another tickbox in the install or as a seperate installer on the disc, check out the dvd see if its there.

BlackSite: Area 51, ha, I didn't like the sound or look of that. Looked like it borrowed from to many previous games, plus mb for mb, are mega sized installs like that really all that much better? I suppose GoW is, but it didn't take long to install considering, certainly not an hour!
I'll check the game DVD as you said, thanks ;)

i think Epic has a tool to convert all the models and stuff, it's just not with the editor.

when i dl'd blacksite i thought ten gig would amek it the biggest game evar, i'm pretty sure hugo takes longer to complete:P
would have bought it apart from the reviews, there are practically no sites that reviewed it despite it being praused in previews for about a year, then i saw a crapload of gamer reviews and almost all (bar one who game it 4) game it 1 or less out of ten...saved my money:P
gears took so long cause it decided to decompress everything after putting it on my computer, so it too it from a long time to 'i thought my comp had crashed' long time.

GoW took a half hour tops to be all done installing. Still quite long for a PC game. Well worht the wait though ;)
jamesuminator, could you point me to this tool please mate? All I really want to do is unpack the .upk files to take a look a the textures really. I've Googled this info, and apparently you can't just unpack these files. I was hoping some clever folk on here would know better though :P :D
I did find a handful of artwork on the GoW concept artists site:

thats one hell of a building, dont know why they dont have architecture lik ethat in real world, its a hel lof a lot more impressive than a glass slide (urbis in manchester, a giant glass slide in the middle of an area filled with awesome stone architecture) that wierd giant glass dildo thing in manchester is another example of bullshit architecure lol.
rufusbezak - March 25, 2008 06:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I agree, most modern architechture that does not borrow from great historical architecture, is just a loada shite. Some embarassingly so
Scottish Parliament. Cost milions & DESIGNED BY FUCKING MORONS!

Much of the GoW architechture is very much like real world loacations though! Prague, parts of Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, to name but a few , all have architecture very much like that seen in GoW. The steampunk stuff is an amalgamation of thos great hulks of industry/industrialisation (bessemer converter) and classic architecture. It's almost seems criminal to use the setting for a shooter!

lol, that last pic reminds me of reactor 4 from stalker:), scratch that, the yantar lab, the cylindrical walkways around the mini brain scorcher.
bruce campbell single handedly saved the bulgarian economy with the man with a screaming brain!
i agree though, that parliment has nothing on ours! and whats with those lame black things over the windows?
rufusbezak - March 25, 2008 06:39 PM (GMT)
The Man with the Screaming Brain, great taste man, I loved that film! :D
Those things 'over' the windows!? How about that 'thing' those windows are in! Looks like it was cobbled together from leftoevers and constructed by 5 year olds. Has to be the most embarassing parlaiment building ever!? I wouldn't care, but Scotland has some great architecture to take inspiration from. WTF inspired that though!? A heavy weekend in Holland?

It's true, strangley enough most things taste great coated in batter and deep fried :D My faves are black pudding or Starbars in batter. You gotta put them in frozen though I think, otherwise they just ooze out when cooking. Man, don't we eat some minging shit in the UK when you think about it!?   And we have the cheek to call the yanks!

That all sounds lush as fuck :D
Digestive, butter & jam. An old one but a good un ;)
variation, Weetabix with butter & jam :D
Optional: topped with Primula cream cheese.
Milkyway and pickled onion crisps. A strangely nice combination, to my tastebuds anyways.
Not very bizarre, but great all the same. Instead of sherry trifle, soak the sponge in Southern Comfort. Great if you need to eat something before a night out! :D
Are you at college or something? cos crisp butties were a staple food back when I was there
Sfisher7 - March 27, 2008 01:23 AM (GMT)
This is a good example of how fast a thread can be derailed.
I used to eat butter, just butter, nothing with it. Oh and once I took a slice of cheese and put some sugar on it. That tasted weird. I don't eat that many strange things though.
As for something on-topic I believe you can export textures from UnrealEd.
el-b - March 27, 2008 01:43 AM (GMT)
i prefer margerine lol. primula used to be great then they changed it, but then again the only one i have been anywhere near since i was a kid is cheese and chive, and that stuff puts you off life lol.
i did 4 years in college on art and 3d courses and almost 2 years doley, where i am now, seems like being 'volounteered' for five months assistant managing charity shops by the government isnt enough of a qualification to stack shelves in sainsburys lol.
its why i devote almost all of my time to making my comic, its pretty much my only chance to un-rut myself and achieve something with what i spent 4 years at college making.
when i was at college i was having two large big mac meals a day for dinner, they had vouchers by the bookful and i didnt ever put that much on, i tend to move just about enough to stay at a stable size lol.
ontopic wise i have said everything i have any clue on, if you can export textures though make sure you put the guns ono resi 4 lol, that way maybe i'll get to use the lancer finally:P
