Title: Leon's Big Honking Re5 Review.
LeonPlisken - March 16, 2009 06:41 AM (GMT)
Ok, just gonna do this quick and dirty like that prostitute last year.
Gameplay - 8/10 - Ok, so RE5 has tank controls still and uses a very dated style of movement... but somehow it just feels really good to me. I mean sure it's no huge improvement over 4, but I like the addition of the right analog actually moving your character rather than just being a very poor camera. The inventory now has little quick select tabs you can set, and weapons feel a bit more sturdy and differentiated. The hordes actually feel like hordes this time, even though the most I fought at once was maybe 10 or 15.
Story - 4/10 - I give the story an exclamation point because they had fucking awesome ideas... that got no and I MEAN NO explanation. I don't care if I'm spoiling anything, Jill's death is lame, Wesker faked his death again, apparently Wesker is a clone child thing, and we have the origins of the T-virus with no added back story other than, "Flower Evil!"
Graphics - 9/10 - Running this on high def I felt pretty good about everything I see, I only have one complaint... there does tend to be a tiny minute little bit of chugging if you and a friend whip out machine guns and fire at the same time.
Multiplayer - 8/10 - Not as satisfying as it should be, but fun. I played the whole story on split screen and by myself. Over all it works fine, nothing at all is different when on 2 player other than you can yell at Sheva if she takes too much ammo and actually get some response if an actual person is playing.
Guns - 10/10 - Ok, not a real category to grade, but my God, the weapon selection in this RE feel enormous. Right now I've got the Lighting Hawk Magnum with unlimited ammo and the Gattling Gun as my main weapons... I FEEL AWESOME.
Over all - 9/10 - Just go play it. It's great, it's not amazing, but it's pretty damn great. There's only a few things I feel should be added through DLC, be that more playable characters, costumes, weapons... etc. I think this game would be great if they let you use any of the mercs characters in story mode, seeing as they added chapter select.
One final note... WHERE THE HELL DID HUNK GO?!
Cerberus - March 16, 2009 10:03 AM (GMT)
good review.
some questions:
how is the "getting.infinite-ammo-for-a-gun-thing" solved?
char-movement with the right stick: ....errm, how? you still move your char like in RE4 - so can you strafe now in addition to "normal-RE4-movement" with the righ stick?
unlockables? ....special guns, costums, merc-char's? what about it and how to get it?
The Flash - March 16, 2009 01:27 PM (GMT)

left analog stick is for strafing and moving forward (TPS style) while right analog stick is used to turn character (tank style)
el-b - March 16, 2009 03:49 PM (GMT)
FLOWER BAAAAD! lol
glad to see the gattling guns back, does it aim like the other guns or is it heavily affected by the holding position...can it be raised up and down much and aimed accurately (not that you need that witha gattling gun).
also, since its nabbed the holo inventory off dead space do items take up militple spaces or one each, and is the weapon system the same, 4 weapons quick eqip section and the rest in a box or the inventory?
also....MERCHANT? NEED SCREENIES lol.
LeonPlisken - March 16, 2009 04:12 PM (GMT)
Unlockables - 10/10 - Chris gets his REmake costume with a much approved HD over hall and Sheva gets skimpy little outfits we can force her to run around in. There are 5 unlockable weapons that you can earn through special requirements; Gattling gun, bow, Hydra, Hand cannon, and the M93r.
Infinite ammo works pretty neat, if you upgrade a gun completely you go to the "Bonus Features" and you can buy it's infinite ammo option. At the end of every chapter you visit the non-existent merchant, it's simply a post chapter item management screen. You can buy and upgrade weapons here, but there is a lack of gravel voiced pedo sounding merchant. You earn points as well, points are used for buying things at the bonus menu. It took me 15,000pts to buy unlimited ammo for my Desert Eagle.
Gattling gun? Umm, well it's inaccurate as hell, but with a constant badguy raping stream of bullets you simple have to piss lead at the wall and you're being effective. Gattling gun starts with unlimited ammo, epic win.
el-b - March 16, 2009 06:23 PM (GMT)
so no multi space items?
15 000 pts doesnt sound like much, is money harder to find now?
doesnt seem that good, enabling inf ammo weapons from the beginning, apart from making it easier to control the ammo flow for your partner it could make it way too easy...i hope the ak and shottie inf ammo options are far more expensive.
LeonPlisken - March 16, 2009 07:30 PM (GMT)
@el-b; no no no, gold is actually about the same, you'll still scrimp money together to get what you want, but points are different. At the end of every chapter you have to earn points, you're given rankings. The most I get at the end of a chapter is like 2,000 for an S rank on Veteran difficulty, but professional should give more.
You can't buy the infinite ammo until you've beaten the game once, and even then you have to shell out different amounts for each gun. After beating the game on normal I only had 15,000 points. You also have to buy the cheats individually per weapon, there isn't just an unlimited ammo type.
So far the prices on that bonus seem to be.
Handguns - 6000
SMG - 6000
Shotgun - 8000
Sniper - 10000
Magnum - 15000
Points are much harder to get, but in the long run aren't aggravating, just time consuming. Money is separate, keep this in mind. Points are used to buy 3d models, art, and special unlockable cheats.
EDIT: All items take up just one space, it sounds bad, but you only get 9 things to carry. Which means are you gonna carry that extra gun or that extra healing spray? It can be a pretty on edge system when you're really hurting for supplies.
On 1 player I pretty much use Sheva as a pack mule that gives cover fire, I set her up with my unlimited ammo pistol, and then she carries all my extra and spare stuff. On 2 player you and your friend can actually strategize and give each other proper use and option for tactical assessments.
el-b - March 16, 2009 07:46 PM (GMT)
the whole money points thing sounds like a good system, are there larger case upgrades or is it more like zero in that the two characters have to share everything...and one last thing...is it exactly like that or are there crates again?
actually one extra case question...does ammo take up loads of spaces still or is it back to the original resi evils iwhere you can carry a shitload of bullets in one slot?
i'm done lol.
LeonPlisken - March 16, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
You can carry kind of a shit ton until you need to take up multiple slots.
Handgun - 50
Shotgun - 30
SMG - 200?
Rifle - 30
Magnum - 12
Grenades - 5
Grenade Launcher rounds - 12
You only get 9 per character. Which means on single player you have 12, sort of. There are no case addons at all, you have max health and max inventory from the beginning. A very good factor is yes there are lots of wooden crates to bash for small amounts of gold and bullets. Maybe 100 gold and 5 handgun rounds. You never feel like the game is being generous, in fact I ran out of ammo completely quite a few times... fucking Lickers... yes... lickers are back. LICKERS AND NORMAL ZOMBIES!!!
You can also find semi-hidden silver weapons cases that will hold a new and usually much wanted weapon. There are very few weapons you have to go buy.
So basically earning 50.000 gold in this feels about as hard as earning 1,000,000 peseta in 4. The cash in much tighter, but feels a little more balanced and realistic. I think $2,000 is a believable price for a military grade assault rifle.
tweaker61 - March 16, 2009 08:42 PM (GMT)
The game controls are like Gears of War, just without the covering and walk and aim feature....That would be so great...
And is there a merchant in RE5? The demo had some gold coins, so im guessing there is, or it might be a idea capcom later left out.
LeonPlisken - March 16, 2009 09:04 PM (GMT)
There is a merchant! Sort of, there is no actual merchant character, but between chapters you can shop for weapons stuff.
Cerberus - March 16, 2009 10:03 PM (GMT)
Two last questions:
I heard of different control-settings. So you'll be able to use RE4-control-sheme as an alternative to the newer one - is that correct?
And: what about merc...in RE4 merc was (for me) an instrument for getting the handcannon and a testing-field for new chars....so, in RE5 does merc still play a role for the unlockables?

well about controls..... yes there is an option to get the exact control scheme of re4 and the legendary (imo) r-1+ X( or 360= right trigger+ A)
and as for mercs... im going as slow as possible to unlock the dam game mode, so yea... sigh

1. There are like 5 different control settings, I'm playing the ps3 version and yes you can set it to mirror re4's controls perfectly.
2. Nope, Mercenaries only deals with mercenaries, to an extent. You get pts at the end of a match due to the ranking you achieved, these points can be used to buy the unlimited ammo I talked about earlier.
Beating a chapter or beating a mercenaries level gets you pts. All the unlockable weapons are attained through buying certain things. For instance to get the hand cannon you have to upgrade the s&w M29 completely, buy all of it's upgrades... then you unlock the hand cannnon for purchase.

re5 changes much, it becomes DMC-ish now
LeonPlisken - March 17, 2009 02:24 PM (GMT)
Now that you mention it, this does feel a great deal like DMC, though I kind of like it. Replayable chapters, the ability to jump into to a certain spot in the action, upgrading weapons has become stream lined, and over all it just feels a lot smoother in the action department... I just wish it were... yu know... scary.

aah, I see. thx.
o, oh oh...one more thing (this must be getting on your nerves by now - sorry): the stuff you unlock in, lets say the 1st difficulty-level - can this be used for playing the next harder mode (like new attacks or combos learned in DMC)? or is it like in RE4, where you had to beat the game once without any unlocks on the difficulty-level (for example hard) you want to have the unlock-stuff later.
LeonPlisken - March 17, 2009 05:14 PM (GMT)
All items, stats, equipment, and etc carry over. With chapter select you can even go play specific chapters on any difficulty you want.

AHH! i think making any gun have unlimited ammo just kills the game, and i mean ANY GUN.... jus speed running thru the chaps with d.eagle or inf rocketlauncher kinda....eh? RUIN THE GAME? mercs mode is still kool tho

Since the weapons don't upgrade by themselves i don't see how it will kill the game. It's not like it will be forced on you or something ,yeah you'll be tempted to use it but you'll still have a choice.Plus it add some kind of replay value.
The_Big_Cheese - March 18, 2009 10:31 AM (GMT)
With all that said, would you say Resident Evil 5 is better than Resident Evil 4?
LeonPlisken - March 18, 2009 02:29 PM (GMT)
INFINITE AMMO IS AN OPTION!
Once you unlock it you can switch it on and off in the bonus features menu, it's not constant and it is a pain to earn it.
Is RE4 better than RE5? Despite all the little noobs whining about Leon not being the main character, yes, it's beyond better. Chris and Sheva make a great new team and by all means stomping on necks and cracking skulls feels so good.
Did I mention Chris can do the neck breaker?
Ratede91 - March 18, 2009 08:08 PM (GMT)
yeah i kno its an option but its kinda like a double edged sword. sure. when using the unlimited ammo u dont have to conserve ammo putting less stress on every crate and barrel obliterated lmao. but at the same time it removes a kinda of anxiety Of collect ammo that makes the game a little more enjoyable...idk thas just me tho
LMAO, oh and even if i was to go back and play without infinite ammo i would be screwed bcuz i sold everything in my invetory to get the unlimted gatling gun and long bow  anyone else sense the irony in that
LeonPlisken - March 18, 2009 09:46 PM (GMT)
Actually I only had to do a little work for the Gattling gun, it's not even the best weapon to have infinite ammo with.
Gattling gun.
Pros
-Big and Powerful
-High Rate of Fire
-Uber Damage
-Unlimited Ammo
-Makes you feel manly
Cons
-Big and clunky
-You have to aim a little high seeing as he holds it low
-Wild and nearly uncontrollable
-Huge ammo back pack makes it very awkward to aim with any other gun and the knife
It's a fucking bad ass weapon, but over all it lacks the degree of usefulness of say an unlimited ammo magnum... which I also have. I went for the Hawk (desert eagle) magnum because it fires much faster than the other magnums, it only lacks a little power.
Magnum max power ratings
s&w M29 - 3200
Lightning Hawk - 3000
Hand Cannon - 5000
Sheva's Bow - OVER 9000
Your base handgun only achieves a max power of 250, so those are really high rates of damage.
Ratede91 - March 19, 2009 01:29 AM (GMT)
i thought shevas bow was around 4000 to 5000
LeonPlisken - March 19, 2009 01:42 AM (GMT)
According to the game it's instant kill on just about everything, but it lacks a laser site like all the other weapons.
Ratede91 - March 19, 2009 03:07 AM (GMT)
and its not a good choice with the cover system installments becuz of her "arrow release follw thru" standing in plain site to get shot
but anyways...
I hate how re5 turns into into a ARMY OF TWO wen the majini start toting around ak's and u have to constantly use cover to eliminate them

ULTIMATE PANTS - March 19, 2009 07:01 AM (GMT)
Bought RE5 yesturday, I was determined to play it through in one sitting, which took me untill 6:30 am to complete -____-
Anyway, the years of hype diddn't help, I was a little dissapointed in some aspects, but that doesn't stop it being a 10/10 game.
I just think RE4 did it better.
WHAT I DID LIKE:
- New inventory system: You couldn't just build a supply large enough for a small army like you could in RE4, you never have more then "enough" ammo no matter how full your inventory was, which I liked.
- Having a partner: the partner AI is pretty rock solid, and you have a fair amount of control over their actions aswell.
- TMPs/Machine guns get more ammo now: Instead of just the TMP and its rare ammo, theres a bunch of machine guns, and you can use one of them instead of a hundgun throughout the entire game, the ammo is very common.
- Eggs: the fact that they can rot is a nice touch, aslo eating eggs can heal you completeley, but eat an egg that has past it's prime and you'll die. Logic so brilliant I love it.
- Cover system: They diddn't need to add a cover system but they did, and it's handy to have at parts.
- Mercinaries mode: Anyone say 'replay-ability'?
THINGS I DIDDN'T LIKE:
- Music: I just diddn't like the music as much as RE4's soundtrack, it did get better near the games conclusion though, very good infact.
- The new shop system: Why can I suddenly have access to all the guns and equipment I want in the middle of no-where? Would make alot more sense to have some sort of merchant again.
- Old Gigante (SPOILERS) - I was looking forward to fighting El Gigante V2, only to hold down the fire button on the infinite ammo turrent untill he kicked the bucket, the least enjoyable boss fight IMO.
- Recycled bosses (SPOILERS): Many bosses seem to be used multiple times, some that don't even make sense, and just seem to be thrown back into the game for the sake of it. Like the bat mutant thing.
- Mercinaries mode character selection: Wheres HUNK? Also having the alternate costumes as 'Characters' doesn't count guys, it's a smaller mercinaries roster then RE4, dissapointing. Encorporating the past mercinaries characters wouldn't have been difficult.
The cons I mentioned are obviously very small, its nearly perfect, but RE4 got closer to it.
tweaker61 - March 19, 2009 08:13 AM (GMT)
You can get a bow? Damn, thats epic. And for alternate costumes can you use them in the maingame, not just mercenaries? Cuz useing sheva's weird tribal costume and the bow...wow...totaly epic... I WANT THIS DAMN GAME!! GAAAAAAH...DAMN YOU CAPCOM!! DAMN YOU!!!...
LeonPlisken - March 19, 2009 02:55 PM (GMT)
RE5 mercs
- Chirs x 3 costumes
- Sheva x 3 costumes
- Jill x 2 costumes
- Wesker x 2 costumes
RE4 mercs
- Leon
- Ada
- Hunk
- Wesker
- Krauser
ZOMG! They are missing a 5th character I must go return my copy of the game!
I really didn't get any feeling remotely reminiscent of Army or Two when the zombies started using guns, I did mess my pants quite thoroughly when I had to fight a swarm of them.
The game is solid, as much as people want to complain it's another RE and it's RE done just like RE4, so all the RE4 fans need to shut up! Christ I dunno how many message boards, not this one, that complain about a lack of Leon.
I dunno about you guys, but I got my money's worth and plan on buying the DLC to come out soon.
10/10

anyway, is it really true that there are nemies that use gun?

what? theres not the same amount of playable merc chars inboth games
and i lilke this re5's 'merchant idea" better then re4's. constantly hoping for the merchant to pop up around the cornrer, or accidentally popping him for sum odd reason sometimes pissed me off, but at the ending or beginning of chapters....or hell just in the main menu, upgrading is more effeicent and gets a thumbs up, but ur right about recycled bosses
[SPOILER] It sucks wen u have to fight the leech boss thing FOUR EFFING TIMES, diffferent variations or not. chaps 1-2, 4-3, 5-3,6-3? WTF!!! i mean yeah, its kool that their are sticking to the same virus through the entire game but come on, they coulda varied alot more than they have... and el gigante (thas freakin spanish but we r in africka? Double the WTF on that) and that scorpion bat fusion with a hog faced boss were not anywhere near relevant in the game
