Title: Velvet Assassin
Description: an opinion - mine XD

Cerberus - May 29, 2009 08:36 PM (GMT)
Greetings people!

I got Velvet Assassin two days ago and played it for 4 hours by now...

I know most reviews are like the game is ...meh, not very good and not really bad.

My personal opinion right now is: the game is great! And there are three main-reasons why:

- "real stealth"
... getting caught means you're fucked: low ammo, no big health-bar, real-time-shadows and no "standing-in-front-of-guards-but-they-can't-see-me-cause-I'm-a-shadow-zone"

- graphical style
... I like the artistic way the game uses colors: orange/autumn-colors for day-missions and grey-blue-white colors for night-missions and indoor-areas

- authentic knife-combat/-kills:
... the weapon of choise for stealth-kills is the main-chars Fairbairn-Sykes-knife (a combat-knife develloped by british officers somewhat around 1940): all kill-anims I saw by now are completly reasonable (throatcuts - stabs to lungs, heart, kidneys, head, neck and the spinal column - several cuts to important tendons to make the victim fall over); I love realism of that kind

The game isn't pefect but in the end I would say its a (for me) VERY good mixture of Commandos, Hitman and Splinter Cell

Everything with a "emo psycho knife wielding killer French chick" is "WIN" for me ...don't be selfish pass the morphine around ..

I hate this game. <_<

It seems like it'd be awesome. But the controls are awkward and the gameplay sucks.

2nd that!

like wow this coulda been gr8 BUT WOW did they flop this one

the stealth kills SUCK! they are boring not really realistic becuz the animations SUCK and the enviroments generally looked the same. not really WW2 theme becuz the war was fought with numbers and in this game there is about 18 ppl in each mission with a key target??? not likelly. and her sneaking around was so robotic and UNREALISTIC

the world war 2 idea was gud but nothing else was

wtf? ... wasd for movement + 5 other keys are awkward? sorry that argument doesn't count.

...thats pretty much a matter of taste: I generally like stealth-based games

  ...were you playing the same game I played - the kill-anims are completely smooth and reasonable (hitting vital points of the human body) during the stealth-kills.

gameplay is pretty much the same like in ALL stealth-based games (dark project, splinter cell): sneak up to enemies stun/kill/grab them, hide corpse/body, go on sneaking to main-goal of mission, achive main-goal, snaek away ...so the gameplay-sucks-argument isn't really counting too (in my eyes)

robotic sneaking ...ok I have to admit that this animation is pretty hard when you change the walking direction fast - but thats something I can live with.

That pissed me off if nothing else that you said did. "That argument doesn't count"? Since when are your opinions better than mine? I wasn't arguing. I was giving my opinion. This game sucks. Waste of money. Piece of shit. DO NOT BUY. The controls are awkward. The way they control your character is rediculous. When you press a button, there is.. like... a small delay before your character reacts. The animations are boring and lame. The stealth is unrealistic. I love stealth games. Always have. Probally always will. But I will never love this game. It's a piece of shit. End of my opinion. Mine is as good as yours. Period. <_<

Look at splinter cell (the first one). that was released in 2001 and its MUCH better than velvet assassin. Not bcuz the technology advantage sam fisher has but every other reasons. If he gets caught he STILL HAS A CHANCE!!!! u kno why? bcuz noone is perfect. that chick on velvet asassin can't protect herself and think about realism, if she is a spy then shouldnt she have learned to defend herself so the mission wouldnt have been compromised so easily. NOT REAL. she sucks, that morphine bs really sucks, and the whole game sucks

and those kills did suck and not real. please explain why shanking somone in there genitals is nessesary? it isnt is it, nope, not realistic

Hey, easy. I didn't mean to offend you. Peace, please. I just thought that the way you control Velevet Assassin is pretty similar to the way Splinter Cell is controlled and that noone I know thought that Splinter Cell-controls were "awkward".
Maybe I said this in a not very nice way, but it really wasn't my intention to start a war - I was just very supprised you think about the controls this way.

So please accept my appology for that missunderstanding  .

and btw about the delay of the chars reaction after the control-input:
 errm I've noticed a small delay while moving the camera (like in dead space) but not during the movement-input...

And this is a point, where I have a slightly different opinion: the "chance" you have in Splinter Cell is, in my eyes, much to big. You can get away with pretty much every mistake you make.
The "chance" you have in V.A. is surely MUCH smaller than in S.C. but it is still there - I think your chances with a silenced 1911 against one or more guard(s) that comes to your position, while firing a MP 40 or 44 at you and you hiding in a shadow (propably without any cover) should be VERY small.

about morphine-mode: here I totally agree with you, which is the reason why I don't use it - its a pretty lame element like a "get-outa-jail-for-free-card"

I'll have to admit here, that I didn't saw every kill-anim when I wrote the 1st post. But also said "every anim I saw until now" - ok maybe should have added that I didn't finished the game (and still don't have).
So I have to correct myself a bit: not all kill-anims should be seen as realistc.
But I also have to say maybe somewhat about 50% of them are quite close to what (again in my eyes) is supposed to be deadly and fast-deadly when it comes to the use of the FS-knife.
Is it nessesary to show this and the other 50% of the anims: well I guess this question will lead to a discussion about how "nessesary" it is to show violence and brutality in games or other media-formats to keep the audience interested.

Here is my point of view about this:
As long as it is used an element of style so that the customer notices it but is still focused on a bigger goal than consuming the violent element its all right.

good example: Silent Hill-series ... pretty brutal but great stories, American McGee's Alice ... partly very brutal but nevertheless a piece of art

bad example: Manhunt-series ... only reason for me playing these two games was to see how far the shown violence would go...(pretty creepy, I know and I'm not very proud of having played these pieces of software)

...well about V.A. - why do I play it... hmm ... cause I like sneaking around and up to enemies (and yes, including the silent kill of them), cause I like the different way of presenting a WW2-scenaria-game (no shooter or RTS)

...and last but not least maybe because of my sometimes twisted taste :D
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So maybe all I said until here was pointless for you and TheSnowWolf - if that's the case please just let's leave this topic to rot and everyone of us sticks to his own (equally valued...I wanted to say each opinion has the same value) opinion in peace.

....hmm American McGee's Alice  ...how about a discussion about games as a form of art in another thread ... *goes of to play Alice again*
