Title: [cpu] Custom Rig
Description: Theoretical
leon_me_kennedy1438 - September 17, 2009 12:27 AM (GMT)
Hey everyone, after realizing, even with a new GFX card, this CPU will still be shit, I've created a "Theoretical PC" with custom parts. So, this is my list. If I have missed any parts, let me know. Also, tell me if I can get anything better out of what I listed, potentially for a cheaper price.
| CODE |
Custom PC:
Vista/Windows 7
Intel Quad Core (Processor) $300
1TB HDD $129
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 $99.99
GE20LU10 (DVD ROM) $100 Logitech G15 Keyboard (920-000379) $126.99
Comstar 2GB DDR2 240-Pin Memory (RAM) $66.99
Razer Lacheis 4000 DPI Gaming Mouse (RZ01-00170100-R3F1) $99.99
Rocketfish 5.1 Sound Card (RF-51SDCD) $59.99
Total = $982.95 |
Updates: GeForce 9800 changed to 8800
Looking for 3GB of RAM.

Okay, I'm going to ask questions about the parts and why you chose them so don't go hostile in the next post.
Why the awesome keyboard? A normal keyboard does just as well. Plus it's not as expensive. the features of the G15, like the macro, can be easily set to any normal keyboard key using a macro program.
Go with Windows 7, the point is is looks much better than vista and uses half the RAM needed for Vista.
Gaming mouse? good choice for that one. The slide technology in it will help with a lot of the FPS and TPS like Cod4, and Re5.
The Graphics Card: Why did you switch from 9800 to 8800? I thought the bigger number was better lol... whatever keeps the budget up though I guess huh mate.
Tell me if these were good points. Hope I helped you on that.

Okay, thanks about the Gaming Keyboard.
SnowWolf told me that the 9800 was prone to overheat really fast, he said to switch to 8800.
I said Vista/7 because I'd get what was available at the time, but yeah I noticed that Vista requires twice as much RAM for everything.
P.S.:
I'm not gonna go hostile on ya. I know little to nothing about Computer Hardware. I'm the software guy.

Ah okay... Cool, glad I could help with the keyboard thing. Hope that computer works out for you! :)

ehn ... i would look into that claim a bit more, lmk.
you can't generalize for all 8800's and 9800's since there are many different models within both series.
for example, i own two 8800GT's, both of which run at ~110*C core temperature under full load, full fan speed.
the 9800GT has the same specs as the 8800GT, however, it was designed with improved thermal dissipation in mind.
so don't be so quick to assume that all models in the 8800 series are better when it comes to thermal management, or vice-versa.
what is your budget ?
if you know about how much you're willing to spend, i can pick out some of what might be considered 'ideal' parts, for a balanced system, and you can let others critique the choices.
also, can you purchase items online ?
or just in-store, and if so, what retailers ?

your setup sounds allright.
I agree with OmegaGCRE4's statement about win 7 and what zaia said about the 9800 and 8800GT.
One hint from me: I use one 8800GT from gainward, the golden sample edition with 1024 MB DDR3 video RAM and I have no problems to run any piece of gaming-software at a resolution of 1920*1200 and mostly full details at somewhat about 40 to 60 fps(gta4 was the only game that pwned my system until now  ).
...the rest of my system: Athlon X2 5600, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, win XP SP3 all on a pretty old gigabyte mainboard.
about the mouse: also consider logitech's gaming mice - right now I use the latest G9 lasermouse and I'm fully satisfied with it.
leon_me_kennedy1438 - September 17, 2009 11:37 AM (GMT)
Okay, I'm aiming for around 1000$
The highest I'm willing to go is as high as I paid for this comp.
With what I have detailed above, it's already better than what I have.
I may go with Geforce8800 because it's only 100$.
Thanks for your suggestions guys, I knew I could count on you computer experts.

*** Warning :: Reading Ahead ***
aside from the fact that you aren't specific enough about the CPU / GPU / HDD and OS,
you are missing ESSENTIAL components, namely the motherboard, power supply,
and a case capable of housing that monster.
your current theoretical system is terribly imbalanced,
towards peripherals like the mouse, keyboard, soundcard, and DVD drive
- ie.: you are wasting too much money on them.
the quality of your gameplay experience is NOT going to be termined by what kind of keyboard you're using,
but rather, it's going to be dependant so much more on the parts inside your system.
the more you spend on periphals, the more performance you are sacrificing.
for a gaming rig, if someone tells you to spend MORE on your DVD drive than on your graphics card, they are mentally ill, and should be shot. :)
at any rate, i'll post some parts suggestions .... when i get the chance, i guess  (hopefully soon)
