If it's any help then here are some tips I found when drawing your own charecter

Draw a rough stick figure of the charecter and the position they are going to be.

Then flesh the charecter out by adding an outline to their body

Add clothes and hair etc

Basically it's easier to build up your drawing. Imagine you are adding on layers untill you get a complete picture. Use a sharp pencil and a clean rubber. If you want clean and sharp lines then once you have drawn a line and it's a little scruffy, rub it out slightly so it's only bearly visable then redraw it so it's only one line and it's a clean and sharp line.

Furthermore if you want it to stand out then buy a black pen with a FINE nib that won't bleed on the paper or bleed too badly. You looking for a nib that will give you a line that's the same size as the pencil line. Then use the black pen to go over all the pencil lines then give it a second incase the ink your using needs to dry and rub out any pencil lines that remain.

If you want to draw eyes and you're like me and they go wrong then draw one eye then draw two lines across the face. (in very light pencil) One line horizontally across the face where the top of the eye is and another at the bottom. This helps you to get at least one dimension right.

When colouring I prefer to use pencil becuase it gives you a bit more flexibility and if you make a slight mistake you can rub it out. As always use sharp pencils when colouring in and try to use even pressure when you are colouring in so the colour look even and not blotchy. If you want to shade then I find colour the area you want in the lightest shade you're going to use then keep building up the colour on the areas you want to shade.

I hope this is of help to anyone. :)
