Title: Not a major problem :)

Sparkle - March 10, 2007 07:50 AM (GMT)
It's not really a problem, but I don't like it
I have my GCSE's In May / June (GCSE's are tests at 16 and basically determine where I can go to sixth for college next year)
And basically I'm stressing.
MAJORLY.
It's 10 weeks till them and I'm frantically revising, because I want to shove it in peopels faces.
I'm not usually competitive but I NEED to beat people in their GCSE's.

So yeah
Basically I keep panicking, and I know they are ages away, but I am SO worried.
I can't sleep at night cos I'm thinking about them.
I've already taken 1 and got an A*
And I'm predicted pretty good... 2 A*'s, The rest A's except for 2 B's.

Has any one got any tips on how I can relax and stop stressing so much?

Thanks :)

I find the harder I force it the less I remember when it comes time to write a test. Maybe set 2 times a week until the end of April to study a bit?

Just study bits each day, and eventually you will have everything down. I know that you are a smart girl, just relax, take some time for yourself, and study maybe like 4-5 times a week. Ask yourself questions, seek extra help. Do you think that would help?

How stress will effect your test

QUOTE
Some stress before a test can actually be helpful. Just as stress at a job can push you to work harder, test stress can motivate students to put forth their best effort. However, too much anxiety can weaken students' confidence. The anxiety that students feel when faced with an exam can create a kind of noise or static in their minds. Unless they're able to relax, that noise can block their ability to recall important information. It can also impair their comprehension and reasoning, which makes problem-solving very difficult. As a result, students may receive grades that don't really reflect their hard work and abilities.

Believe in yourself. You wouldn't have been given a place on the course if you didn't have the ability to do it. Therefore, if you prepare for the exams properly you should do fine, meaning that there is no need to worry excessively.

Don't try to be perfect.
It's great to succeed and reach for the stars. But keep things in balance. If you think that "anything less than A+ means I've failed" then you are creating mountains of unnecessary stress for yourself. Aim to do your best but recognise that none of us can be perfect all of the time.

Take steps to overcome problems.
If you find you don't understand some of your course material that could be on the exam, getting stressed out won't help. Instead, take action to address the problem directly by seeing your course instructor or getting help from your class mates.

Don't keep things bottled up.
Confiding in someone you trust and who will be supportive is a great way of alleviating stress and worry.

Keep things in perspective.
The exams might seem like the most crucial thing right now, but in the grander scheme of your whole life they are only a small part.

Develop a timetable so that you can track and monitor your progress. Make sure you allow time for fun and relaxation so that you avoid burning out.

As soon as you notice your mind is losing concentration, take a short break. You will then come back to your revision refreshed.

Experiment with several alternative revision techniques so that revision is more fun and your motivation to study is high.

Don't drink too much coffee, tea and fizzy drinks; the caffeine will 'hype' you and make your thinking less clear. Eat healthily and regularly; your brain will benefit from the nutrients.

Before the Test

Don't cram:
Studying like crazy right before an exam can leave you exhausted and more stressed out than before, so study in small doses over several days. You do have months :P

Get a good night's sleep:
Lack of sleep contributes heavily to anxiety. Be sure you go to bed early the night before.

Eat a healthy breakfast:
Blood sugar is at its lowest in the morning. In order for you to think and problem-solve effectively, you needs a good breakfast.

Exercise:
You should engage in physical activity before the test to reduce body tension. For example, take a brisk walk or jog.

Come early and prepared:
By arriving to the test early and with the right supplies (e.g., No.2 pencils, calculator), you can avoid stressing out about small details. This will allow you to focus on the task at hand.

hmm good luck. i just had exams this week and what i really noticed was people who try to cram minutes before the exams. If u havent studied enough by then, ur screwed.. i guess i just saw heaps of people freak out before then, Be prepared, know that your prepared and enter the exam, cool, calm and collect. I know it sounds tacky but i find it makes a huge difference because it allows u to think clearly when you are writting the exam.

Also a weird exam tip i picked up from our study skills day, if throughout the year you write with a weighted pen, and then with a normal pen in the exams u will write a hell of alot faster. Basically u just like cut up and stick a rubber on your pen for normal days then take it off in the exam. Writting by comparison will be alot easier than your used to so you wont get as tired.

:hugs: good luck.

teehee, i hope that all made sense.

That pen thing sounds cool and it makes sense! I'm doing that! :P
