Title: Jan Vennengoor of Cannae Jump
Description: Aye or naw.....
Henke - August 8, 2008 08:45 AM (GMT)
Tried to do a poll, but obviously polls are Huns.
7m bangers????? :yikes:
Bye bye.
Don't know about anybody else, but that kind of money for him is just too good to turn down, even though the story is more than likely utter pish.
I appreciate that our system doesn't get the most out of him, but he is still BBJ without the pace. And let's face it, it's unlikely our system will change to get the best out of him.
Even though it would leave us with essentially just McDonald and Samaras, for that kind of money, if true, we should get rid quicker than a fat bird the morning after.

If it was true for that kind of money i would sell sell sell with out a dout, At 29 he aint getting any younger... ;)

True that. :D
It would leave us woefully short up front, but how the feck do you turn down that kind of offer? :hmmm:
It does seem though, however, that the offer is more like 5m plus Timothy Atouba. TBH, I'd still take it, as it would sort out the left back problem.

7 million quid? So fuck. If anyone on this message board can see that 7 million being spent on a player/players then fine...
groucho bhoy - August 8, 2008 06:45 PM (GMT)
can't say no to 7m bucks, but would there be 7m worth of investment?
not a chance.

That to me is the biggest problem, whether they will actually bring in someone better for the money. It is so late in the day now that I can't see us bringing in anyone comparable for that amount of cash. All the guys we want to be looking at are in the £10 million plus zone as that is the level we want to advance to, the latter stages of the CL.
Strikers are all about goals and in that regard I can't complain about JVoH, who brings a good return (comparable to most successful strikers at Celtic in days gone by) and, whether people think he can jump or not, he sets up an awful lot and scores some really important goals as well, when we are in a pinch no less. He is still the key player for us in the opposition box (when we can push far enough up the park to use him properly), creating so many chances with his flicks and excellent holding up of the ball.
I would keep him for at least a season or two. Sell only if we can get better for that position, and leaving the striking fortunes of the side to Killen, McDonald and Samaras is basically handing away a massive advantage. JVoH is also well liked in the dressing room and you can tell he is very much a team player. Slow he may be but look at the stupid money we have to compete with for strikers nowadays, Andy Johnson £12m, for a striker who has pace but not much else about him.
Rather keep what we have. :thumbs.up:

Ye lets get rid of Jan for 7 mil.
Where will we buy another 20+goal scorer who played nearly half a year injured with that 7 mil.,but it would be a great bit if business as we paid 3+mil.
So lets dump Artur for lets say 7,8,9or 10 mil, what a great bit of business that would be as we paid less than 1 mil.
Should we do the same with Aiden he did'nt cost us anything, of coarse not.
We have a golden chance of putting the screws on that other mob for the foreseeable future and we won't do that by selling off our best players, players who we can't and will not replace.
So instead of selling our assets we should be looking to add," it's not like we're the ones who lost tues. night" and by adding we will turn those screws tighter and tighter.
In all my years of watching Celtic sell our stars "all the way back to Paddy Crearand" I have yet to see our fan's get the benifit of a good bit of business.
Keep turning the screws CSC.

Since when has Jan been a 20+ goal a season striker? He is a target man and despite an impressive pre-season, not a very good one. And he is absolutely nowhere near in the same class as Artur or Aiden. Nowhere near as important to the team.
As for the money being re-invested in the squad? Well, yup that ain't ever gonna happen. We'd probably end up with Gary O'Connor.

The reason I added the + in is I think he he'll do better this season, if he stays healthy.
You and I wrote about this last season, you don't particularly like him, I would'nt trade him for anyone else in the SPL or Championship league, and unfortunately thats the bracket we're in when it comes to transfers. Kyle Lafferty?
After the hun game when he scored that last minute goal, the one that kept our hopes alive, I thought, I wonder what Henke "and a couple of my mates" are thinking now.
Hope he scores plenty and we'll all be happy, anyway enjoy the flag tomorrow and more importantly enjoy this upcoming season. :ynwa:

Ahhhhh, you are one of those type of supporters then Tam. One that seriously thinks that just because you don't rate a player that you are going to be somehow dissapointed when they score cause it somehow makes your argument weaker.
If you think that, then you are deluded mate. I celebrated that goal against the Hun just as much as Jan did. BTW, he will never be a regular 20+ a season striker.
And incidentily, when it comes to this particular topic, ie 7m quid for someone like Jan, personal opinion about the guy doesn't come into it.
That much money for someone like him, who doesn't turn it on regularly, or that suffers due to the system we play, is just too much to knock back.

The only thing deluted about me Henke, is that piss poor American beer I drink.
But I have to say you took that the wrong way, it was not meant as a "back in your face" comment, rather that maybe now we'll get behind the big man after all we're not going to get anyone better for a rumoured 7 mil.
Henke, you were implying that was a cheap shot, I don't do cheap shots.
As for "one of those types of supporters", ye hopefully you meant one who will support the team. A nd I'm sorry you took that the wrong way

I wasn't serious either mate. :) Just wanted to be clear that although I may not rate a player and I may have a moan about them on here, doesn't mean I don't scream encouragement at them too.
BTW, If you are looking for a good beer, then look out for VB (Victoria Bitter). You won't regret it.
Or better still, do what I do and stick to the black stuff. :guinness:
