Title: Open Source Software
Description: Give us links!

Megacherv - February 1, 2008 06:06 PM (GMT)
The wonders of open-source. It's free, takes up less space than other software and is usually better aswell! Post your links to Open-source software (and OS's if you want) in this topic, I'll put the links in this post.

Just to define OSS, it is software that the source code that can be viewed by anyone and that you are free to edit the software. If it's made by big companies i.e. MS, Apple, there's a chance that it isn't open source (more likely with MS ;))

A NOTE:- As far as I know, these programs are mostly for Windows (except for Darwine). There are some links to Mac/Linux ports/versions on these sites, but if you can't find them, post here, PM or e-mail me and I'll try and find them.

NEW NOTE (Fri 16 May):- I'm gonna start posting less WIndows programs and more Linux programs, since I've started using Ubuntu.

Here are mine:-

Tremulous (Used by me)
An online FPS game, originally a Quake mod, now a stand-alone game.

An archive manager (????) that can unpack ZIP files, RAR files and many others, including it's own format, 7z.

MGCV Note: this is an e-mail client, since I have been asked what the difference between this and Firefox is.
www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

Ubuntu (operating system)
One of the many distro's of Linux, this is one of the best. It supports Live CD, so you needn't install a new OS onto your PC. It is one brilliant OS.
www.ubuntu.com

Open Office.org (Used by me)
An office suite that includes support for Microsoft Office files (including Office 2007). It isn't an MS Office clone, but it is great value for money...wait...that doesn't make sense...(it's free) (doesn't have publisher support as far as I know)
www.openoffice.org

GIMP (Used by me)
This one doesn't need to be explained, it's basically a Photoshop replacement (doesn't have all the features however, so basically like Photoshop Elements).
www.gimp.org

FLV Player (Used by me)
A .flv video player. This is useful if you have DownloadHelper for Firefox and download videos off of YouTube.
Link from download.com, can't find the homepage

Vista Drive Icon (Used by me)
Replaces your current drive icon with a Vista style one, with a bar showing remaining space.
www.drvicon.sourceforge.net

Joomla
Used for website building, but instead of showing off your 1337 html/css skills (like Dreamweaver and Frontpage) it's used to make content-rich sites with a minimal of f**king around.
MGCV Note:- It only works on paid-for webspace, and you must already have the webspace running to use it.
www.joomla.org

PSUbuntu (operating system)(for PS3)(used by me)
This is one of the Linux distros that are available for PS3. This one is Ubuntu, which I've mentioned above. Use the guides to...well...guide you to installing it.

www.psubuntu.com

Frets on Fire(Used by me)
A Guitar Hero clone, which is played by holding the keyboard like a guitar.

http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/

Yellow Dog Linux(operating system)(for PS3)
This is one of the Linux distros that are available for PS3. This one is Yellow Dog (a.k.a. YDL) There are also versions for Apple Power PC and IBM Cell.
MGCV Note:- Beware, 3.3 GB ISO size, requires a DVD-R/RW, portable storage media and a fast fraggin' connection or else you'll be waiting for 3 days before the download finishes.

Wine(for Linux/Unix)
This software allows you to run Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP, 3.x and DOS programs on Linux, Unix and other POSIX (????) based operating systems)

EDIT: And a description for Debian... "A popular and influential Linux distribution, the basis for several other distributions, including Knoppix, Linspire, MEPIS, sidux, Xandros, and the Ubuntu family." (taken from Wikipedia)

Megacherv - February 5, 2008 03:52 PM (GMT)
You have loads of suggestions, you might know more than my friend.

I might add screenshots, I'll think about that.

sploodge - March 1, 2008 03:42 AM (GMT)
Add ArchLinux! And FreeBSD! Complicated-to-set-up UNIX-based OSes FTW!

Megacherv - March 1, 2008 08:15 AM (GMT)
Added, and I've also added the Vista Drive Icon. Also, I've added a 'Used by me' note by each one.

sploodge - March 1, 2008 06:29 PM (GMT)
Oh, come on! Have a better description! FreeBSD and ArchLinux are minimalistic so they aren't as over-bloated as, say, Fedora or Ubuntu. You set up what services the you want to run and in the end you have a faster running system :)

But, then again, there is some truth in that description :p

Megacherv - March 2, 2008 09:27 AM (GMT)
They were your descriptions.

Look! A spam post! :Tounge2:

I couldn't quite figure out if this is already added to the list or not, but I'll ask anyways.

Is there a Windows Emulator for the Macintosh OS X? If so, what is it? :D

zero - March 3, 2008 06:07 AM (GMT)
Megacherv do you know that as your the creater of this topic and that is pinned you can do double posts or triple? if not now you do anyway can i change my fire fox skin?? if yes how and where can i find skins ??

Megacherv - March 3, 2008 07:55 AM (GMT)
Firefox calls them themes. GO to tools, then add-ons, then click themes, then click 'Get Themes'. It'll open a new tab with the themes page.

Yay! I have slightly more power here!

zero - March 3, 2008 07:58 AM (GMT)

Dark Protoman - March 5, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
Wow, I use a lot of those. Mostly because they are good, and I hate Microsoft.

One question. What's the difference between Firefox, and Thunderbird?

Tremulous IS fun! And Firefox is an internet browser, and Thunderbird is an e-mail client.

Dark Protoman - March 6, 2008 01:39 AM (GMT)
Ah, I understand now. Thanks. I'll install tremulous right now. :)

Megacherv - March 24, 2008 05:43 PM (GMT)

Megacherv - May 4, 2008 08:41 AM (GMT)
ADDED

StarForce - May 9, 2008 12:57 AM (GMT)
I've got more.

Emesene - http://emesene.org/index.html
An Instant Messenger for the Windows Live Network. Available for Windows and many Linux distributions. Supports skins and plugins (e.g. Messenger Plus colors)

Wubi - http://wubi-installer.org
Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way.
Note: Wubi is also included in the latest Ubuntu and Kubuntu versions, Hardy Heron.

Megacherv - May 9, 2008 09:47 PM (GMT)

QUOTE (Megacherv @ May 9 2008, 05:47 PM)
ADDED, and thanks for the Wubi link, that will be awesome as soon as I upgrade my laptop's RAM tomorrow.

And also... some info about Wubi:

Wubi can work in many ways:

1) Downloading the ISO of Ubuntu/Kubuntu Hardy Heron and putting it in the same folder as the Wubi Installator.

2) Wubi can download the ISO image by itself (but it was REALLY slow for me)

3) Running the Wubi version included in Ubuntu/Kubuntu Hardy Heron CD or ISO. You don't need to download anything if you have the CD.

The Ubuntu installation will have almost the same performance as a normal one. Disk access will be a little slower (for me it's okay, I don't think it's slow., and that doesn't affect additional hard disks). Also, Hibernation is not available in a Wubi installated Ubuntu (since you have a laptop, that would be a drawback)

Megacherv - May 16, 2008 06:44 AM (GMT)
Wubi is now working perfectly on my laptop, although I have to use my Wifi Max dongle, since Ubuntu won't recognise my laptop's wireless hardware.

This is gonna sound weird, since this is my own topic, but doesn anybody know a DVD Player software package for Ubuntu, or Linux is general? Ubuntu's built in movie player won't work, and Amarok (must add) doesn't support any movie playback.
