Title: Increase download speed
deemo - May 29, 2008 03:58 AM (GMT)
Ok, I was wondering if I can speed up my computers download speed. I think its a bit slow. For example, me and a friend both downloaded a 500 MB program onto each of our computers, my speed topped at about 60KB/sec, while his was going 140KB/sec. Strange, I'm running Vista, and he's running Windows Me. I've heard Vista is slow, but thats kinda ridiculous. We had a computer with XP before, but this is my dads computer, and I never used the computer much until we got this new one, which came with Vista, so I dunno how fast the other one would have been (Although it was like 5 years old). Any tips?

But that was direct download or torrents / P2P ? For torrents / P2P You should change Upload Rate from 0 (that usually means unlimited) to any other number. Also Download Rate should be on 0.

Assuming you are just doing a regular download...
It helps a little bit to only have the download and the internet site that you downloaded the file from.
It could've been a one-time thing because a lot of speed depends on how busy the file server is, If you've downloaded before, etc.
The biggest thing you can do is to speak to your isp and get your download/upload speed increased. This does mean, however, that you'll pay more for your internet.

I'm not a computer genius, but I'm guessing it because your dad gets 10x more MB per second then you.

Maybe your ram and processor is just such crap that it won't download very fast.
deemo - May 30, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
My stuff always downloads between 30-60 Kb/sec. I'm pretty sure this processor is ok, it is after all new. I'm not sure, but I think I have DSL. Dunno who the ISP is though.

Maybe that's the speed of your Network Adapter, not of your connection, but that's the speed that shows when you connect it with Windows.
And for Deemo, try the same connection with different computer. It's not a problem of Windows Vista (My comp had Vista, XP, 2K and Linux and the download speed was the same in all OS). Sometimes it is a problem of your ISP, or maybe it's your normal speed.
Other causes can be trojans (Downloader trojans slow down A LOT the speed of connections) or Spywares.
