Actually the EarthBound we know is MOTHER 2, the Original MOTHER was going to be released as Earth Bound (as two words instead of one) but due to the SNES coming out in that time MOTHER never reached America.

So in other words the avatar came from MOTHER/ Earth Bound for FAMICOM/NES.

That's why I said original. Because it was before Earthbound.
