Title: Vista?????? IS IT WORTH IT????

Cory Back - November 30, 2008 10:06 PM (GMT)
I am getting ready to buy a laptop in the coming months. I am looking at an HP with 4gb of ram and 320gb hard drive. I will probably end up with windows vista Home premium. I was wondering what your thoughts on vista were as well as what you do and don't like about the program. Also, are there any problems that you have had or is there anything you would recommend.

OR, should I just wait for Windows 7 to be released?

Also, has SP1 made any difference in your mind?

Please though, if all you are going to say is vista sucks over and over and how much you hate it, don't even bother, I could care less about how much you hate vista. I really would like to hear some good and helpful information.

Thanks
Cory Back

I bought a Toshiba Satellite this summer with Vista Home Premium, and it runs pretty good. I like it so much better than our desktop with xp. The only thing I don't like about vista is almost everthing you want to run, it has a popup asking if you want to run it.

It will be absolutely fine for your laptop. Make sure you get the 64 bit version of windows though (otherwise windows can only use 3.5gb of your ram).

Windows vista is generally more stable than XP, and the performance problems reported when it was released aren't really an issue on current hardware.

General rule: Don't upgrade the operating system on a PC you already own from XP to vista; but if you're buying a new PC you won't have any problems at all and XP will actually limit a computer with 4gb RAM.

I'm currently on a laptop with vista on it, its running a 1.5ghz core2duo, 2gb of ram and I've never had a problem with this or any of my other (3) computers in the house.

SP1 isn't as big a change as service pack 2 was for xp - it sorted out a few compatability issues and has sped vista up slightly; it's an improvement, but it's mostly just a pack of all the updates to date.

Basically, get vista - you'll almost certainly have no problems. There's no real reason not to buy it with a new computer.

Turn off the User Account Control and you won't have to worry about that.

Go to

Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts and then click on "Turn User Account Control On or Off" And then uncheck the checkbox.

As for the OP, I have had Vista for a year and love it and have had no real problems with it (just the usual bugs/glitches that Windows usually have)

Hey thanks Fisha that will be much nicer.

The 32bit version will use the full 4GB after SP1 is installed.
I just installed Vista Basic on a computer I built and it did show 3.5GB until it finished installing all the updates and it now shows all 4GB

I have Vista on both my laptop & PC and I've never had an issue with it other than all the bloatware that comes installed if you buy the computer from a store.
Can't say I noticed much of a change after SP1 on my laptop other than it seems to boot up and shut down a hair faster.

If it helps, my laptop is a Toshiba with 1.73Ghz Intel & 2GB Ram that I bought in Dec '06

No, just wait for windows 7.

I really really like Vista. Much better than XP to me. I would get one now, and you will probably get a deal for one because it's around Chirstmas.

Vista had its problems at launch but its fine for most things now. People who dis it for the same reasons they did two years ago are just flogging a dead horse.

I didn't buy Norton, and I never will. I don't like it. If I ever want Virus protection, I am getting AVG Free.

Using Norton is like using nothing at all.

I use Avast Home edition

i have vista on my Dell Inspiron 530 4gb memory 500 gb hard drive vista runs perfectly and i have no problems with it the only thing about it is if you like games then you wont be able to play some but the bad part about my computer is no graphics card only video and that doesnt allow me to play some of my games that i was able to play on my old computer but that doesnt matter. the thing that bugs me the most about vista is the pop up thing asking me if i want to run the program but that can be shut off

War Man - December 2, 2008 02:41 AM (GMT)
I don't have Vista, but my friend does. It works pretty well overall, except it seems to cause pop-ups about EVERYthing you do. 'Course, it could just be my friend's computer.

I am seriously considering getting a high powered laptop... I need something safe, fast, hard core, digitally enhanced, and pushing the limit of anything out on the market. I know the basic stuff like what a good video card is and what type of memory I want. (Atleast 1 terabyte with a backup drive.) This is going to be mainly for business and showing presentations, videos, and highly digital graphics. The bunches of memory is because I like movies while I travel. I have a VAIO I have had for some time now but it is getting old.

I heard XPS is good for high performance but then I heard it is a gaming laptop... I am not so focused on gaming as I am on just showing some good quality DVDs (mostly blu-ray) and storing ALOT of financial/business data. I need it to be secure obviously. Seems like there are some good techies here any suggestion?

(Money is not an issue.)

I would suggest an AlphaSmart by Dana.

I need digital... Not pre-k quality. Thanks for the suggestion but I am looking for something high-tech. I have a writing computer and excel. I need high-tech so I can give more digital presentations. Something easily compatible with high resolution. Giving a financial report over the profits made within the last 6 months you don't want an error where the presentation shows exactly the opposite of what you intended. I mean XP professional is fine and all that but I see this freaking gadgets now in meetings where the laptop can become touch-screen on a projector and so on.

High-tech something that will make an impact. When you deal with snobs like I do everyday you need to have something to make them go :o SHINY! I WANT YOUR COMPANY TO DO MY WIRING AND DESIGNING! Seriously the shiny thing usually attracts more clients then you would think...

Aside from the fact it would cost MS a fair bit, anti-monopoly laws wouldn't allow it.

Sounds like you want one of those HP Tablet laptops.
