In reality, SUV's are very safe. They have more places for the crash impact to "deafen" before it gets to the occupants. What would you rather be in in the event of a collision at 50 MPH? A Tahoe or a Prius?
And, whaddya know. SUV makers are making *gasp* HYBRID SUVS! The new Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and the new Ford Explorer, heck even the new Caddy Escalade are being made into hybrid versions.
And your "unpatriotic" shtick - yeah right. Who do you think first INVENTED the SUV, eh? Yep, us Americans. The first SUV was made in 1963, by Jeep.
Jeep WagoneerNow, anything you have to say other than I reek?

Why not just let it slide?

Personally, I'm sick and tired of Alco making ridiculous claims when he clearly has no knowledge of the subject at hand. He doesn't own a truck, yet he posts in the topic Brandon started about trucks. He drives a Corolla! His statements about the SUV are just too much for me to let it slide, seeing as my dad own an 04 Blazer.

You have to treat Alco like a dog. When he behaves treat him nicely. When he misbehaves either ignore him or show him how insignificant his actions are.
The sooner you realize this N. Reeki the better. When he misbehaves and you not only mock him but aggrevate the behavior he takes pleasure from it. Really a classic phsycopathic case. Not phsycopathic in the criminal way. Physcopathic in a morally disabled way sure but not to the point of criminal. Anti-social would be an easy way to classify it. But then again it isn't a proper way to classify it since a phsycopath is very good socially.
For those of you who have watched "The Sopranos" he is about a level down from Tony Soprano. I am no phycologist this is just an analysis from observation.
Alco PA1 - December 4, 2008 03:41 AM (GMT)
Well in addition to the fact that indeed you DO REEK (jk <lolyou> ), your post has several inaccuracies.
1. Hybrid SUVs are worthless. The improvements in fuel economy that a hybrid SUV provides is only a few more miles per gallon. On average Hybrid SUVs cost about $10,000 more, and the average driver would have to drive the average hybrid SUV 20 years to save $10,000 in fuel. Also, Hybrid SUV sales have been terrible. Last month, GM only sold 30, thats right, 30, Hybrid Escalades nationwide.
2. Think your SUV is safe? Think again. SUVs are extremely likely to roll over, and eject the occupants fron the cabin, which almost always results in death. Of course if you remain in the SUV during the event of a rollover, you can always take comfort in the fact that the roof will push your head into your stomach. But PUBLIC SAFETY is also a factor here. SUVs are very large, and eliminate visibility for those next to and behind them. Also, SUV drivers are statistically worse drivers than those who drive cars. SUVs do a lot more damage when they run into things, which endagers the safety of people in or around those things, whether it be a car, building etc. Because of the ridicolous height of SUVs, the speed and depth perception of SUV drivers is signifigantally worse. Therefore, SUV drivers are more likely to subconciously speed and tailgate. I recall an accident that my cousin, a tow truck driver responded to. An SUV driver was speeding and tailgating, and rear ended a bus. Her head was smashed into the steering column at 47 mph. I am not sure whether she lived or died, but she was taken away in ambulance.
3. First SUV, not the wagoneer. You are wrong and still missed the point entirely. The first SUV was the Land Rover Series I, which was produced in England in 1948.
4. Why are SUVs unpatriotic? Becuase where the money goes to fill them up. That money goes to Arabs and Russians and slimy oil executives who do not like us very much, nor do they like our values, way of life, etc. Some of this money eventually works it's way back to terrorists. But then again, in my opinion, John Hofmeister is nearly as bad as Osama Bin Laden. My Corolla costs me $30 every two weeks. In some SUVs, $30 would barely be 1/4 of a tank. So, while I do give money to these evil people, it isn't nearly as much as an SUV owner gives them.

Saying an SUV isn't safe is just like saying Tractor trailers shouldn't be on the highway...
I would feel 100000 times better if there were 25 thousand SUVs driving around, compared to 25,000 tractor trailers..

Except SUV drivers are fat slobs who know little about driving aside from what they had to do to get their liscensce. TRactor trailer drivers on the other hand must go through months, somtimes years of training, both in classroom and on the job. When a truck collides with a car, 80% of the time the driver of the car is at fault. When an SUV collides with a car, 95% of the time the driver of the SUV is at fault. Those facts are from the IIHS.

The Willy's Jeep was by no means an SUV, but it was a step towards an SUV. By your logic I could claim that the woody wagon was the first SUV.
deuced - December 4, 2008 06:15 AM (GMT)
Which is the first SUV? Just read history...
GAZ-61 was a four wheel drive car from USSR manufacturer GAZ first introduced in 1938 GAZ-61 to replace V.A Grachev's too-complex model GAS-M21, but production didn't really start until 1940. It was made by putting the GAZ M2 body on a four-wheel-drive chassis. Designed by V. A. Gratchev. It is the worlds first SUV and possibly the world's first all-wheel drive passenger car. It could climb angles up to 38 degrees and cross water up to 72 cm (28 in) deep.
The first version, made between 1940 and 1941, was a 5-seated 4-door phaeton. It was powered by a 3,485 cc (212.7 cu in) 6-cyl 4-stroke engine giving 85 hp (63 kW) giving a top speed of 100 km/h (62 mph). Many supreme commanders of the Red Army headquarters used this car in 1941. Wikipedia: GAZ-61So guess what:
First SUV is Russian. But we must agree with that:
The transportation curator at the Henry Ford Museum, Robert Casey, contends persuasively that the Cherokee was the first true sport utility vehicle in the modern understanding of the term. Wikipedia: SUVSearching more you 'll find that first
off-road vehicle was also russian, the
Kégresse track.
The name comes from the system's inventor Adolphe Kégresse, who designed the original while working for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia between 1906 and 1916. He applied it to several cars in the Royal garage including Rolls-Royce cars and Packard trucks. The Russian army also fitted the system to a number of their Austin Armoured Cars. After the Russian Revolution Kégresse returned to his native France where the system was used on Citroën cars between 1921 and 1937 for off-road and military vehicles. Wikipedia: Off-roadBut how about
4-wheel drive vehicles?
The true inventor of four-wheel drive is not really known; the history of such was not well recorded. In 1893, before the establishment of a modern automotive industry in Britain, English engineer Joeseph Bramah Diplock patented a four wheel drive system for a traction engine, including four-wheel steering and three differentials, which was subsequently built.....
....The first four-wheel drive car, as well as hill-climb racer, with internal combustion engine, the Spyker 60 H.P., was presented in 1903 by Dutch brothers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker of Amsterdam. The two-seat sports car, which was also the first ever car equipped with a six-cylinder engine, is now an exhibit in the Louwman Collection (the former Nationaal Automobiel Museum) at Raamsdonksveer in The Netherlands... Wikipedia: 4-wheel drive
Alco PA1 - December 4, 2008 06:28 AM (GMT)
Yes but at that time GAZ was loosely affiliated with Ford, and the designers who designed the GAZ-61 were Ford engineers. This is shown in the GAZ-61 because mechanically, it was extremely similar to the Ford Model AA.

OK, now this is madness. (insert Sparta joke here)
1. Have you not noticed the recent economic downturn? The Big 3 have ALL fallen in sales this year. The price of gas and the downturn are the reasons why people aren't spending as much.
2. Several points about SUV safety for this one:
1. SUVs WILL NOT roll over unless you drive it like a moron.
2. SUVs WILL NOT eject a passenger unless he/she is wearing his/her seatbelt.
3. Can you quote this so-called study that shows SUV drivers are worse drivers? Yesterday morning on Yahoo I read that if you're a Gemini, then you're more likely to be in an accident than any other sign.
4. If you took a high-school level physics class then you'll find out that there is no good way to solve this problem. Inertia accounts for speed and speed only. When something, in this case an SUV, hits an object at rest (let's say a tree) then the vehicle and everything in it will be going the same speed of the vehicle.
3. The laws of physics say that this crash is highly unlikely to happen.
4. OK, I admit, maybe I was wrong about the first SUV. But, remember if you will, that England was, and still is our close ally. Their SUV was most likely imported to the US, and thus started GM building SUVs themselves, like the 59 Suburban.
5. Um....you do know that not all of our oil comes from Iraq and the middle east, right? What you're doing now is bringing politics into this. I don't know jack about politics, so I'll keep my mouth shut there. But we can get oil from our very own Alaska! If he people who keep whining about it just shut up, then we can drill there. They can't see that's one of the many ways t get out of our oil crisis!

1. No I haven't noticed the economic downturn. I as in a cave, on the moon, with Homer Simpson. Hybrid SUVs sell terribly compared to their non-hybrid counterparts, in both good and bad times.
2. Safety, or lack of. SUVs roll over in during what is known as "emergency handling". This is when you swerve sharply to avoid hitting something, like a small child. Not "driving like a moron". Also, SUVs like the Ford Explorer, the Ford Expedition and the older Chevy Blazers have been known to roll over if they blow a tire. Also, seat belts break.
3. Physics? You obviously do not know very much about physics. If an SUV were to hit something say a concrete wall, and decellarate from 70-0 in under 1 second, everything inside of it would continue traveling at 70mph until something stopped it. Usually what stops the passengers is either the seatbeld, the airbags, the windshield, and in rare cases, objects outside of the vehicle such as a wall.
4. Alaskan oil. It would take at least 15 years to tap that oil. Not saying we shouldn't do it, but the benefits won't be immediate.
