Title: Give me apostrophes or give me Death
haulingass - December 4, 2008 05:29 AM (GMT)
Is it really that hard to add poor old apostrophe to the list of accepted CB punctuation? This is madness! I have been having trouble sleeping lately because of this, and when I do manage to fall asleep, I keep my girlfriends up all night screaming out in my dreams for the acceptance of the apostrophe. They, in turn do not get any sleep, and their jobs as flight attendants and TGI Friday's waitresses suffer. Ultimately, the economy is hit hard because they aren't performing up to their expected level of customer service.
So as you can see, a simple thing like adding the apostrophe to the CB can help us all out economically.
Thoughts?

I think I agree with you on this issue.

I guess Korrupt hasn't found the answer for you yet?

Negative. :(
Here's to hoping that the addition of the apostrophe will be the "Christmas Surprise" that everyone is buzzing about.
KillerKoel - December 4, 2008 05:45 AM (GMT)
haha good point on this one Haulin, just one of those little things that could be added

nice story right their i also agree they need to allow apostrophe's
jefffan24 - December 4, 2008 11:32 AM (GMT)
They are not allowed, as they can be used in a script by somebody who knows what they are doing to "bring down" the site. Admin has commented on this issue many times and he gave the same answer - Its not going to happen.

That's not true at all, it is very easy to sanitize any user input (and should be done anyway, for any type of user input) without having to give up any functionality. For an obvious example, why are we able to use all such punctuation here, yet not on the main site? ;)
Further the Javascript prevention of such characters is very pointless, as it is very easy to disable/edit that individual script whilst the page is loaded and bypass it anyway. I'm happy to give an example (say in a PM) if you want.
I'm not an asp.net developer (played around with C# a little in the past, but nothing serious. I'm a PHP Pixie myself 0/), but
there are tutorials all over the place on sanitizing input and preventing sql injection attacks. I'd be very surprised if the main site did not deploy such methods already however, so maybe there is another reason for trying to limit characters permitted? Or maybe its an archaic piece of code that has not been cleaned up yet?
jefffan24 - December 4, 2008 02:02 PM (GMT)
I haven't designed a game or chat box before...but that is just what admin has said everytime somebody else has asked before...maybe mail him with your example and maybe you can change his mind.

Thanks, Debbie Downer. With that kind of attitude, how can we expect anything to happen?
jefffan24 - December 4, 2008 05:49 PM (GMT)
I could care less, whether you put an apostrophe or not I know what you are talking about...
ramrod - December 4, 2008 05:53 PM (GMT)
I agree with allowing an apostrophe. What is one simple puncuation mark?
I know there are people who want to have David Hasslehoff(apostrophe)'s love child that are not wanting this(aka #24) but I cannot stand the improper spelling without proper punctuation any longer. It drives me nuts. If there is supposed to be an ' then let there be one! Set the ' free.

You could care less? That means you at least care somewhat, and that is a step in the right direction. Because if you couldn't care less, then, well, that would be sad.
N. Reeki - December 4, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
He only said that because "couln't care less" is incorrect grammar.
Bull Dog Mike - December 4, 2008 06:20 PM (GMT)
Yea, would be nice, but as all suggestions, the better ones should be implemented first! (Contract System!!!!) XD
jefffan24 - December 4, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
How about instead of adding this you actually spell out the word...a little extra work for your fingers
He'll = He will
It's = It is
ya'll = You all
Anymore you all want to put in go ahead, but there is no need for apostrophes. Yes it will make your life a little more difficult to type out the word but there are many more things that need to be changed before this.
ramrod - December 4, 2008 08:57 PM (GMT)
ok, in a conjunction as you post that will be fine. But what about when something is possessive? I cannot believe that is charlie's truck. You cannot spell out anything
Long live the Hoff
jefffan24 - December 4, 2008 09:31 PM (GMT)
Would you please stop with the hoff stuff please.
That would be something that an apostrophe but I think I get the point whether you put
I cannot believe that is Charlie's truck. (btw if you want correct grammar make sure you capitalize names next time).
OR
I cannot believe that is Charlies truck.

I think the majority of people should learn how to spell correctly before worrying about whether there is an apostrophe allowed in the CB.

It is on the cb, not in the cb.

I am pleased to see that we are making progress with "Operation Apostrophe," as I'm now officially calling it. To demonstrate my dedication towards this cause, I wrote a haiku. This one goes out to you, Apostrophe:
Poor Apostrophe!
Always getting omitted

You are complaining about not having an apostrophe to be punctually correct, when You use ok to start a sentence, lower cased, and you do not capitalize Charlie. As well as you did not use a period in your last two sentences.

I assumed he was talking about "charlie" from Nam. Some people prefer not to capitalize the alias for the man in the black pajamas, even if he was a worthy f***ing adversary.

Should it be put in? YES
Will it? NO
Why? Possibilitly of a hacker using a Injection and taking down the game.
BUT. There are codes to prevent that from happening.
Andrew - December 4, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
As a PHP game developer, I have no knowledge of ASP... so I feel bad. Perhaps an alternative character could be used and replaced in the CB chatbox with an apostrophe? That would prevent ' sql injections, and give players the desired apostrophe. Even the UTF code might work.. it can't affect sql (I use that occasionally)
(remove spaces to work)
However, there would have to be several modifications in the Javascript field checker that prevents using ampersands and such.

Mmmm the only thing preventing most special symbols from from being sent is a single line of javascript, which can be easily circumvented. Apostrophes are still prevented from being displayed by the server, but it would be just as easy to sanitize the user input and replace any references to them with with html character code
Andrew mentioned above. I'd be surprised if there is not already a function in .net to do most of the work such as
PHPs htmlspecialchars. But yea, preventing special symbols in such a manner does nothing at all for security unless it is checked on the server side.
But I do agree with some of the previous posters that, as the website is safe, there is no big rush to do this. Lack of apostrophes is at worst an annoyance (although quite a big one to some people it seems ). It seems like the userbase for the most part see other things as having a higher priority.
Edit: Seems Andrew beat me to it. *shakes fist* :P

Bad grammar and spelling are rampant on these forums.
I suggest that everyone is kicked off the forums and made to re-register, and that a test of basic English forms a part of the registration process.
Fail and you are out.

Although it's true that the apostrophe is subject to grammatical abuse, and I'm sure its inclusion on the CB would lead to many such abuses.

But as it stands right now, it's already set up for grammatical abuse by not even being an option! I'm optimistic that once the apostrophe is introduced to the CB realm, people will learn to respect the apostrophe and to use it correctly. It's kind of like spending time teaching your kids how to properly operate a full-scale catapult or trebuchet. If you completely forbid them as kids from flinging projectiles via medieval ballastics machines, what do you think will happen when they grow old enough to acquire one or ten of their own? Mass hysteria...cats and dogs living together, etc.
When apostrophes are outlawed, only outlaws will be using apostrophes.

Thanks...gotta keep it real. And for honesty's sake, I had no idea the catapult/trebuchet metaphor was part of an old saying. :D
P.S. For all you nay-saying anti-apostrophe folks out there...how would you like it if you were Irish and you couldn't spell your own last name on the CB properly? See what I'm talkin' about??!!?
War Man O'somethin' somethin', you know what I'm talkin' about! If you're truly Irish, you'll get my back on this.
NOTE: There were eleven apostrophes used in this post. Imagine the mayhem on the CB without apostrophes!...utter madness!
