Title: Improve grammar and spelling on the forums

Karalius Marijus - December 5, 2008 11:28 AM (GMT)
In order to improve standards on the forums, I suggest that everyone is unregistered and made to re-register.

A test of basic English should form part of the registration process. Only those who pass are allowed back on the forums.

This includes mods and admins.

Please vote above.

There are people on here that don't speak english as their first language. Yes it can be bad at times but you get used to it eventually.

Karalius Marijus - December 5, 2008 11:51 AM (GMT)
Does that mean we should let them carry on blindly making errors. No it does not.

We should be encouraging them to learn.

English is not my first language, but I manage well enough.

jefffan24 - December 5, 2008 01:14 PM (GMT)
English is my first language, and I used to angry about it too...But when there are 6,000 members (seeing as you are 6,245) you shouldn't expect every one of them to have perfect grammar.

myst48 - December 5, 2008 01:58 PM (GMT)
I consider myself an intelligent person, but I am not perfect. Lets say my mind is quicker than the hand....hence typos.

I've been an editor since before I began high school, so I definately see the value of being able to communicate in a uniformly understandable way.

However, this forum needs to acknowledge the existance of those who don't know English as a first language, or those who grew up speaking (or writing) in a different dialect or style than the rest of us.

Yes, there will be many of us who silently look down upon those who use poor grammar, and there are times where a user's post will be totally not understandable (though sometimes it's because they were drunk when posting...), but it needs to remain a silent activity. Posting harsh words against someone's language capabilities may cross the line into flaming.

I can see Karalius's point of view. Nothing will improve if poeple stand idlly by and say nothing.

Noone is saying theyre should be any harsh words. Perhaps some gentle guidence what is for there own good in the long run

I totally disagree with this. Whilst it can be irritating to see people make the same old mistakes over and over again (sometimes intentionally, with words like teh etc..) that is no reason to cleanse the forums of all those you feel to be inferior. There are quite a lot of health problems that could affect the way people are able to read, type & engage with languages. Are the same people who support the subjection and segregation of users in this way, also interested anyone with a serious speech impediment and correcting them on their pronunciation? Do these things really bother you enough for you to do away with half of the usebase on these grounds alone?

I'm a terrible speller. I've improved slightly over the years, due in no small part to hard work I have put in, but I still rely and awful lot on a spell checker. As for grammar, that's mostly guess work with me. I too feel that people can be far too lazy with writing and languages as a whole, but these forums do no exactly seem the ideal place to start such changes. They should start in home & at school.

Also you mention that this should be a place where we should encourage people to learn. I do agree with that, but I don't think that banning users from these forums solely because they have difficulty with typing and/or languages is exactly encouraging people to learn. Trukz is a fun game, but do you really think people like the game & the forums so much that they'll hit the books just to get back on them?

Texting and the internet have had a lot to do with the "dumbing down" of America. Many people these days take the easy or lazy way out instead of trying to communicate better. However... there are quite a few people in this community that do not use English as a first language. To them I say hats off and keep up with your studies of English. To the rest who are lazy or ignorant I say step up and show them how it is done.
When I see a resume the first thing I look at is the spelling, grammar and layout. If it is not done well into the trash it goes. I don't care if they will work for free!

Fixed. Consider this a free service of the Trukz Editorial Board :^)

You fell for the there/their/they're trap.
They're = they are - if you can't substitute those words, you've got it wrong.
Their is the possessive, belonging to 'them'.
There is a location.

I don't know of a good way to differentiate between the last two, but the contraction is easy.

KillerKoel - December 5, 2008 06:21 PM (GMT)
I don't have any problem with people not being able to spell correctly, my best friend in High School was Dyslexic, so he just asked me how to spell... well everything, but i didn't mind, and its not like reading mispelled stuff is that hard to read because the person spelling it sounded out the word, so just sound out the mispelled word and it should be all good. And I dont think people should have to pass a test to get on the forums, because its kind of demeaning to fail a test to get you into the forums for a game.

KillerKoel - December 5, 2008 06:23 PM (GMT)
With all that said, anyone with the full ability and opportunity to learn proper grammar and spelling should take it, it is worth the knowledge because people think you are intelligent if you use proper spelling and grammar and have a good vocabulary

You forgot Noone is actually two words: No one.

Also, there is not always a location. "Why are there peanuts in my hamburger?"

Anyway, my opinion is this would be discriminating against those who are not natural to English.
It is hard to understand others at times, but you can't expect anyone to be perfect. Everyone has grammar errors and makes typo's.
