CanadianWhiteLiner - December 6, 2008 02:27 PM (GMT)
Hey All
I'm new here and layed-up with a bad knee, soooooo i'm killing time til I'm back on the road again.
Just curious how people here do drive for a living ? :explosion:
And if not what is your occupation?
havns3 - December 6, 2008 03:05 PM (GMT)

Ghost Rider - December 6, 2008 03:18 PM (GMT)
I'm only 14 so i just work as a diesel mechanic for my dad in his shop. He owns his own Trucking Company so once in awhile i drive with him and sometimes alone but thats no legal lol. Once i turn 18 i am gonna get my CDL and then drive full time for my dad. I am still deciding if i want to go to wyo-tech for diesel mechanic or not. My dad says if i go he will pay for everything.
Hornet168 - December 6, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
I have been "real" OTR for 14 years now. Now I am a web OTR driver for a couple of weeks.... <lolyou>
BRANDON - December 6, 2008 05:48 PM (GMT)
im 16 and run heavy equipment for my cuz and my friend and help my dad build houses on the side.. were pretty slow right now but after deer season it should pick back up.. and been a OTR trucker for 325 days on the game now! LOL I think im going to go to heavy equipment school just because it looks good on your record and it helps yea get jobs.. I would like to work for LeeWard construction running excavtor in there quarry, only time will tell though i love playing in the dirt though.. LOL
mackman - December 6, 2008 05:52 PM (GMT)
I drive a rock bucket and lowboy local.
Mr Ford - December 6, 2008 07:01 PM (GMT)
Basically the same as Mackman here. Mine isn't a lowboy though, tilt decker that I pull behind me. Sometimes when we ain't too busy, work in the shop, run a backhoe, mini-x, curbmachine or anything else that might come up and need an operator.
BTW, I would stay away from wyo-tech Ghost. Just sayin, but we had a guy go there and he didn't learn a flippin thing other than how to do an oil change. Better off working in your dad's place and learning for free. Everything I have learnt was free knowledge by working in our shop part-time.

welding is a good paying job if you get in the right spot and its fun too.. I enjoy it very much, i weld alot in our autoshop at the school.. Hope it works our for you bud
tom15 - December 6, 2008 07:50 PM (GMT)
Thanks Brandon. I'm actually planning on going to college for engineering, but I figured I would need to know how to weld. Plus it is fun.
Mr Ford - December 6, 2008 09:31 PM (GMT)
You don't need to know how to weld to be an engineer, just be good at BS-ing and pretending to know everything even though you know a quarter of what your talking about. :D What type of engineering do you want to do? Drawing house blueprints, designing building/bridge specs, building inspector?

ROFLMAO ROFLMAO what a way to put down his hopes and dreams
tom15 - December 6, 2008 10:10 PM (GMT)
I will probably go into electrical and work on medical equipment. I took the welding class because I also thought about going into mechanical.
Sweetchuck - December 6, 2008 10:20 PM (GMT)
Grew up on a farm driving tractors and trucks (up to tri-axle)
Apprenticed at a diesel rebuild shop
Drove ambulance and fire apparatus
Went to college to be a shop teacher
Now teach metal shop, drafting, Engineering, Electronics, and Applied Physics at a high school
Now I just tow a "small" setup- 3/4 ton Dodge with 28 ft enclosed race car trailer
I have a lot of friends who drive local and OTR, and I know I couldn't take the stress of doing it every day. Too much legal hassle, to many idiot drivers. My hat is off to the guys who do it!
BRANDON - December 6, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
im not telling you what to do but if you like the idea of welding look into building skyscrapers and other metal based buildings there is alot of job opertunites in that feild of work
Alco PA1 - December 6, 2008 10:41 PM (GMT)
Mr. Alco PA1 drives all sorts of trains and a Freightliner truck that he got cheap. He calls the truck "his toy". He used to drive city buses on the side.

Handyman - December 7, 2008 05:01 PM (GMT)
OK, I'll bite.
Yes, I did drive, a long time ago.
Local & Over-the-Road from 1968 to 1982.
Back injury forced me to change direction.
College, Computer Science degree. Worked in the computer industry for 23 years. Programer to Systems Engineer, and everything in between.
Semi-Retired, moved to Florida, working part time as a handyman now (hence the handle). Fixing things for all the "More Mature" folk here. ;)
Olson Trucking - December 8, 2008 05:05 AM (GMT)
Well I still do not have my CDL. I will be getting it this spring. I used to drive with license tags of J or less so under 26,000 gross vehicle weight. Mainly drove two ton dump trucks and one ton trucks. When I worked for a landscape company I drove supplies to all their job sights, picked up stuff from wholesalers. I also plowed on my own for a couple of years. I got out of it all to focus on school. I miss it sometimes. But, I can only handle so much at once. I finally hit burnout stage and had to take a step back.
