Title: More Cargo
Description: Place cargo suggestions here!

StJimmy - August 26, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
I looked at the already suggested suggestions and didn't see a suggestion on this so I will make one. I think we need more cargo such as:

Log(s)
Beet
Tree(s)
Cars
Army Equipment
Toys
Lumber
Lightbulbs
Corn

Many more that I can't think of.

EDIT:
Here are some more, some may be random:

Turf
Wrestling/Boxing Ring
Folding Chairs
Tables
Pop
Milk
Video Games
Luxury Items
Clothes (Not sure if thats already one)
Turbine
Engines
Shiloh
Explosives
Stereos
Televisions
Paper
Windows
Mattresses
Insulation
Dirt
Doors

It would be kinda cool to see seasonal cargos as well, such as Xmas Trees from Nov 1- Dec 31, Mulch in the spring, Salt in the winter, etc

StJ if your willing to keep the first post updated i'll pin this.

Oo, I like that.

Some of my ideas for cargo include:
Chicken/Poultry
Bread
Electronics
Farming Equipment
Computers
Wine/Alcohol

And just out of curiosity, what about hauling "illegal cargo" (such as "stolen property", "horse tranquilizers", or the like? You could get caught with the illegal cargo if you're pulled over for anything else [speeding, HoS, overweight, etc.]. I understand if this would mean reworking the entire supply/demand thing, so it was just an idea I'm throwing out there. Maybe illegal cargo is always an option, and no city actually demands/supplies it. Just a thought.)

That'd be better than general merchandise.

Maybe it is "general merchandise". :ph43r:

And we already have Electronics as a cargo type.

StJimmy - August 26, 2007 06:21 PM (GMT)
Updated my first post with more.

Mogri - August 26, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)

That sir just got you a warn.

Just to clear things up, I am not a "sir", I am in fact, a "ma'am". Apparently this is bad, so for those posting after me

Do not suggest anything illegal.
Also, if someone could point me to where this is written (for future reference), that would be very helpful.

Monster Jam - August 26, 2007 10:21 PM (GMT)
Its in the sticky, the link is in the PM you get when you received your warn.

Shows you how much I pay attention. :P

Keeping in spirit of the thread, more ideas (sorry if some have already been said, I can't see as far back as the OP):
Sod
Toys
Elderly Equipment (I see a lot of demands in Florida with this one :P )
Swimming Pools (with Senator Stevens, now even trips to Alaska aren't out of the question  )

gamer42au - August 27, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
Some suggestions from the 2002 Commodity Flow Survey link:
Coal
Fertilizer
Chemicals
Metal goods

Of these coal is the big missing element, given its large share of actual commodity flows.

EDIT: re-reading the survey, Coal is almost all moved by rail, not truck

octane - August 27, 2007 03:33 AM (GMT)
exercise balls to michigan. theres alot of fat people over here

StJimmy - August 27, 2007 10:37 PM (GMT)
No, I actually meant the food Beet or Beets, not beer. And for automobiles, I spaced out about that, so I will suggest:

Trucks (Piggy back style)
Flatbeds
Boats
Waste (Not Hazardous or Nuclear)
Mobile Office
Packaged Food
Cement Slabs
Trusses (sp?)
Fencing
Bleachers

Radios, phones, trash, computers, fine wine, cd's, pencils. What about the idea of being able to mix loads. Say tak 50% electronics and 50%beer. It would make the game complexer. Is 'mixing' items done in real life? (sorry i dont know much about trucking)

I highly doubt you want to haul a bunch of liquid with your electronics, lol. Also, I would imagine that trucks make a trip to a single destination at one time, and that would probably make coding the game difficult, especially if one of the two items your hauling is in demand, and the other is not.

StJimmy - August 29, 2007 02:05 AM (GMT)
LMAO :D Nice...Made my day :)

And I agree with rooster, that would be complicated because then you could take 39,000lbs of an item that has a $500 bonus, and 1,000lbs of one with a $400 bonus, meaning you make $900 in bonuses.

The majority of loads hauled in reality tend to be "mixed" instead of one single type. LTL (less than truckload) is nearly all mixed since it is made up from numerous amounts of cargo from different shippers. For instance, I just hauled a load of coiled steel, three were 5000# each, two were 2500# each. Along with them was a 12,000# and 7000# automotive die. A second shipper added on two boxes 3'x3'x6' each holding "models" of automotive parts valued at $75,000 combined. In summary just look around the room you're sitting in and you'll see a lot of things that could be listed on this list.

Most of that falls under other categories.

I think there's only so much depth that should be placed into this.

I hope to never have to decide between 40,000 lb of ballpoint pens vs. fountain pens.

Or blue pens vs. black pens. :explosion:

StJimmy - August 29, 2007 12:34 PM (GMT)
I think that should just be listed as Office Supplies, paper is necessary, but to list things like pens, pencils, calculators.

Paper could simply be changed to "Office Supplies" really.

An 8000# roll of paper from the mill wouldn't be classified as an office supply. Paper comes in different sizes, forms and types from the mill, the printer, etc. I've hauled posters used for movie marquees that could be listed as paper for that matter though they have a specific purpose.

True.

The US Census Bureau actually publishes a list of what commodities are transported and in what volume (by classification), in the 2002 US Commodity Flow Survey.

Wouldn't in make sense to choose items representative of categories that are actually commonly transported by for-hire trucks?

StJimmy - August 30, 2007 02:54 AM (GMT)
Yeah, we need to get this game as close as you can to real life, but I like it as it is, but there's always room for improvement. The only thing that would really make it better is if you could actually drive.

It would be nice if the game were to allow a greater choice in what we could haul. However, I also think that what we haul should be limited to the type of trailer we have. Being able to haul anything without taking into account what kind of trailer we have doesn't make much sense.

@StJimmy, driving is like any other job. After a while it's just a job and nothing special.

StJimmy - September 2, 2007 01:59 PM (GMT)
Well really, you don't need your own trailer, it comes with the cargo your hauling, and I think you should at least get a $50-$100 bonus on all cargos if you purchased your own trailer. But the trailer would improve your chances of random failures, depending on its condition.

That is exactly the problem with this game. Cargo doesn't come with a trailer in the real world of trucking per se. The cargo hauled is dependent on the type of trailer you have. If you show up at a grocery warehouse with a tanker or flatbed you couldn't possibly get a load. As for random mechanical failures trailers are not the weakest link (that would be the tractor) since they are relatively simple in design and built tough to withstand the rigors of constant use.

If the game allowed us to buy our own trailer then the freight rates could be modified to reflect this. Of course you would be limited on the type of cargo you haul. If you've got a flatbed you won't be able to haul milk for example. This would add more strategy to the game requiring players to decide on their approach in how to play. Carry this over to a company and contracts would be affected as well as increasing competition for the different types of cargo. When a company is started the founder would be given a choice in deciding the type of trailer he/she wants based on the cargo type they anticipate hauling. If an applicant to that company has their own trailer and it doesn't match what the company requires they can sell their trailer and buy one that fits the criteria or they can sell their trailer and use the company's trailers. Players that use their own trailer should get paid a higher rate whether they are in a company or independent like myself.

scott mac - September 4, 2007 03:35 PM (GMT)
i thunk you should be able to haul trash demo and stuff you haul inn live floors

StJimmy - September 10, 2007 09:25 PM (GMT)
I think you are gonna get warned.

But, other reasonable items that I think should be added:

Toys
Lightbulbs
Corn
Games
Waste
Luxury Items
Explosives (Requires 65 driver rating)
Horses
Cows
Chicken/Pultry
Chemicals

rebelyell2k3 - September 11, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
Diesel fuel gotta have that shipped around.

Greg Bush - September 11, 2007 04:29 PM (GMT)
maybe we could have top secret government loads........like the A-Bomb or helicopters or tanks? Or maybe a presidential hauler??? a limo trailer that transports the white house and the prez around america to different locations????

LyNkS - September 11, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
Stuff like that isn't realistic at all tbh. Just stick to normal stuff that gets transported.

Greg Bush - September 11, 2007 05:49 PM (GMT)
hey government loads are realistic..........Landstar transports government helicopters and tanks and things..........for proof go to their website....

StJimmy - September 11, 2007 10:42 PM (GMT)
Why not just call it -Army Equipment-

And im sure the president can travel around the country in just a limo or something, he doesn't have to be on wheels.

ICRDI Templar - September 13, 2007 11:34 AM (GMT)
