Title: Poll making 101
Description: This class should be mandatory

Mogri - September 5, 2007 06:27 AM (GMT)
Ok, enough is enough. The sheer magnitude of poorly made polls is just too much.

Since my dream of ball peen hammers and knuckles isn't likely to happen, this poll making 101 class will have to do.

DISCLAIMER: None of this is personal and none of this is in response to any particular person. Any attempt to make this a personal attack on any person will be ignored as the ignorant response of someone who does not know how to make a poll. This is merely in response to the fact that, while every forum should have this class, this one does not, yet.

QUOTE (How to make a GOOD poll)
#1 Click the poll button, if you can't find it, don't make a poll.

#2 Label your topic and add a proper description, profanity is not acceptable and spam would not be appropriate, instead stick to something relevant to your topic and poll.

#4 There is no #3.

#5 Input your poll question, essentially why you are making a poll. If you do not know why you are making a poll, don't make a poll.

#6 THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF POLL MAKING 101. THIS PORTION OF THE CLASS COUNTS AS 100% OF YOUR GRADE. IF YOU DO NOT PASS THIS PORTION OF THE TEST YOU DO NOT PASS GO, YOU DO NOT COLLECT 200 DOLLARS, AND I WILL BEAT YOU TO DEATH WITH A SHOVEL.

#6 continued Underneath the "poll question" text field there is a drop-down box where the default text says "Single choice(1)", this box allows you to set how many choices you want the user to be able to select. If you only want the voters to be able to choose one answer to your poll question, leave it at 1 or face my shovel. If you want people to be able to choose more than one poll option, click on the down arrow at the right side of the drop-down box and choose how many options you want available between 1 and 15.

#6 continued again To clarify, the drop down box is not for how many poll choices you want to include, it is for how many you want other people to be able to choose. For example, if you want them to be able to choose 1, leave it at one. If you want them to be able to pick 3 choices, as with this topic, then click on the drop-down box and choose "Multi Choice (3)".

#7 The next section is labeled "poll choices". On each line of this large text field you are able to make a poll choice that the user will be able to select. For example, if your poll question is: "Do you like trucks?", line one (1) would be "yes", and line two (2) would be "no".

#8 Ignore the small box below the large text field.

#9 The rest of the page is the standard topic or post making page.

[color=red]DISCLAIMER (again): None of this is personal and none of this is in response to any particular person. Any attempt to make this a personal attack on any person will be ignored as the ignorant response of someone who does not know how to make a poll. This is merely in response to the fact that, while every forum should have this class, this one does not, yet.

p.s. Constructive criticism and suggestions are acceptable.

Ok, enough is enough. First language or not the number of poorly made polls is just too much.

If I had my way, it would be a ball peen hammer to the knuckles of the people who make s**tty polls, but I digress.

Since my dream isn't likely to happen, this poll making 101 class will have to do.

DISCLAIMER: None of this is personal and none of this is in response to any particular person. Any attempt to make this a personal attack on any person will be ignored as the ignorant reaction of someone who does not know how to make a poll. This is merely in response to the fact that, while every forum should have this class, many do not.

#1 Click the poll button, if you can't find it, you probably shouldn't be making polls.

#2 Assuming you passed #1, label your topic and add a proper description, profanity is not acceptable and spam would not be appropriate, instead stick to something relevant to your poll.

#4 There is no #3.

#5 Input your poll question, essentially why you are making a poll. If you do not know why you are making a poll, don't make a poll.

If you want people to be able to choose more than one poll option, click on the down arrow at the right side of the drop-down box and choose how many options you want available between 1 and 15.

#7 The next section, labeled "poll choices" should be self-explanatory, but if this was at all self-explanatory, this class would not be necessary. So, on each line of this large text field you are able to make a poll choice that the user will be able to select. For example, if your poll question is: "Do you like trucks?", line one (1) would be "yes", and line two (2) would be "no".

#8 Ignore the small box below the large text field.

#9 If you don't understand the rest of the poll making page you should not make a poll, or a thread, or a post.

A pin would be awesome, but that would be up to the moderators/admin.

QFT. Although the way it is written is almost tounge in cheek sterness, its too the point and will hopefully stop people from making crappy polls that should only have 1 answer option!

The original post is awesome.
I hope I will pass.

screenshots would help some people better.

Maybe edit it for clarity and getting rid of the condescending remarks might make it more useful. Just a thought.

I LOL'd.

I think where most people mess up is they think the drop down box is asking them how many choices are they wanting to make instead of how many choices do they want the voter to be able to choose.

Example:
"My question asks "Do you like Trucks?". I want to make four answers "Yes", "No', "Cake", and "Pie" so I'm going to click 4 on the dropdown menu!"

Oh, and voted for pie. ^_^

Romi101 - September 9, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
Cake FTW..

And I used to do that before, clicked the wrong thing in drop down menu but then I started getting familiar with if and never again

Finally! I voted for pie too.

Anyways, I've always thought that was the biggest mistake people seemed to make. I'll need to clarify that when I revise this whole thing. Sometime tomorrow I'm thinking.

Mogri - September 10, 2007 06:34 PM (GMT)
Update.

I clarified the drop down box area (with a third #6).

And I tried to tone down the "tongue in cheek sternness" a little.

I might consider adding screenshots when I pass the screenshots 101 class.

1#... quit being a douche.
2#... re-write it into an actual piece of information to help people who don't have experience.
3# explain the drop down menu so they can actually make multi choice polls.
