Title: Fuel Economy

admin - April 20, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
Your trucks fuel economy or miles per gallon as it is known in the game, depends on several factors including the items below in the following order:

Truck Condition – As your trucks condition deteriorates your fuel economy will diminish as well.
Cargo Weight – The default fuel economy for your truck is rated at 40,000 pound cargo weight. Driving cargo weights less than 40,000 pounds will increase your truck’s fuel economy. Driving cargo weights greater than 40,000 pounds will decrease your truck’s fuel economy. (With aluminum wheels the base is 41,000 pounds)
Truck Speed - The default fuel economy for your truck is rated at 55 MPH. Driving slower than 55 MPH will increase your truck’s fuel economy. Driving faster than 55 MPH will decrease your truck’s fuel economy.
Weather Conditions – As you drive your route you may encounter headwinds and tailwinds which affect your truck’s fuel economy. The types of wind conditions that improve your fuel economy include Slight Tailwind, Moderate Tailwind, and Significant Tailwind. The types of wind conditions that decrease your fuel economy include Slight Headwind, Moderate Headwind, and Significant Headwind.
Item Purchases - Purchasing any one of the fuel economy modifying items such as Fuel Filters or Fuel Injectors will increase your fuel economy based on the specs of that item. The benifits from item purchases are stackable, so owning a Fuel Filters and Fuel Injectors will give combined benefits.

admin if i were to buy the Aluminum Wheels that allow for an extra 1k of cargo by lowering truck weight does the game still base this on 40k or the new 41k?

Actually I didn't think of this before but you bring up a good point. If the truck's weight is reduced the fuel economy should be affected too. With aluminum wheels the base is at 41K now.

I assume the licenses still drag you down, rightfully so.

CountryPup - July 18, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
On the Route screen is the MPG based on the default 55MPH and 40,000lbs of cargo? I only ask because I'm interested in doing some number crunching on the returns from some of the items and tactical aspect of driving your route.

After you click drive leg, the MPG usually varies, but I'm assuming that it is for the leg you will drive next, not the leg you just finished. It will be possible to back into a rough guess of the MPG based on how many gallons were used between legs.

I understand there is a random factor with head/tail winds and something else, but I want to calculate how much fuel efficiency increases or decreases with speed and/or cargo. Doing some work before spending $65,000 in the future for an oversize load license is reasonable without getting to far into the game mechanics?

Are there lower speed limits with trips and oversize loads?

is fuel economy how much miles per gallon you get?

zax_was_here - July 18, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
yes

Marion Oaks - July 18, 2007 07:06 PM (GMT)

I'd like some answers to these questions too. I've been trying to figure out the answers by collecting data and making comparisons, but it's not really possible, since your fuel tank level is reported in whole gallons, without any fractional value.

It would be nice if they showed the fractional value (Assuming the game is actually calculating it, but not showing it). If the game isn't calculating it, then the MPG numbers are highly inaccurate, and I doubt that's the case since they bother to show them.

Admin -

Can you tell me this. Do the Fuel Economy items add up to give you a percentage increase in MPG or do they compound on top of each other.

For example. If I buy the Air Filter, Fuel Filter and Fuel Injectors for a truck that has a stock MPG of 8.2.

Does it get 5% + 8% + 10% = 23% so...
8.2 * 1.23 = 10.09 MPG

Or....

is it 8.2 * 1.05 * 1.08 * 1.10 = 10.23 MPG

Thanks for your time.

If I understand it correctly it is cumulative so it works like this example:

Base mpg 7 (buys 2 improvements for 10 and 5 percent):
7 +10% = 7.7 + 5% = 8.09

Which is way better than if it were 7 +15%

8.2 * 1.05 * 1.08 * 1.10 = 10.23 MPG

This one.

Have these questions been answered yet?

Throttlerod - February 24, 2008 08:31 AM (GMT)
I use an average mpg usage to run my numbers. Take 10 legs of any route and you should get a fairly accurate average. Once you have that average you use it as a base for your route figures. The reason I do this is because i got tired of trying to make it exact, when really an average is sufficient. IMO

PanheadPete - May 8, 2008 03:50 PM (GMT)
Or it could be like this...each of those percentage items is figured based on the base mpg of the truck, as/when bought. Hence;

8.02+((8.02*1.05)-8.02)+((8.02*1.08)-8.02)+((8.02*1.10)-8.02)=9.8846 mpg

8.02+ ((0.421)) ((0.6416)) ((0.802)) = 9.8846 mpg

I haven't actually checked mine against this, but gut feeling tells me it's close to what I actually see, what with head/tailwinds, average mph, etc.

Knockoff Norman - May 8, 2008 05:27 PM (GMT)
No. It is still the same as I said earlier. When you're not in route look at the MPG listed on your driver profile. Then take the base MPG and do the following multiplication:

base MPG * 1.05 * 1.08 * 1.10

where the 1.05 is for the air filter, the 1.08 the fuel filter and the 1.10 the fuel injector (remove any part you do not have from the equation).

The answer to the equation and the MPG listed on your driver profile page when not in route will be the same (to 2d.p.).

not true, i traveled 60 and my MPG was 5.5, when i went 70 it was 6.4

The MPG in the game compared to MPG in REAL LIFE trucking ( Class 8 tractors not pick up trucks ) is way off .

That sounds like one of the kids that used to go to our church. He said he has a old ford diesel with the mechanical fuel system. All you basically do is turn the pump up or down by turning a screw. He was saying he turned it all the way down, which is the least amount of fuel being used, and got 50 mpgs and lost no power. I havent seen him but i just want to call him a dumbass and a liar. He also had 5 month old pigs at fair that weighed 120 pounds, the lowest allowed is 220, and mine was 270, middle weight. He blamed the weather for it. Not the brightest kid out there.
