Title: Art Farm
Description: Stuff CP did. Really!
Cyberpumpkin - August 9, 2006 09:55 PM (GMT)

Well, first of all, I want to make sure it's okay for me to start a thread to share my stuff even though the pic below represents pretty much
all of the TransFormers-related work I've ever done. I'd still like to share stuff I draw with the AUG, but I don't want to dilute the already pretty thin stream of TF work that shows up here, seeing as we have so few artists.
Um, I guess I'm asking for permission to share non-TF stuff. I'll listen to anyone who answers.

I did this as a commission that the client never paid for. First TransFormer I ever drew. I tried to get all the elements of the craft to show up in the robot design, plus the client wanted it to be female-shaped. Pencils, pens and Tombow markers.
Roadbuster - August 9, 2006 09:57 PM (GMT)
very cool! And yes, you can share non-TF related stuff. Many people have in the past ;-)
Cyberpumpkin - August 24, 2006 05:38 AM (GMT)

Well, I decided that this would be the finalized version of this piece. This is the first thing I've done using layers and CG seriously on a background, and I'm afraid it shows. At least the drawing itself is still okay.
The story behind it is that these three demon kids missed the June 6 parade this year (06/06/06, get it?), and they've decided to just get back on the bus and go home.
Starshooter - August 24, 2006 02:11 PM (GMT)
That is waaaay cute! I like it!
Roadbuster - August 24, 2006 04:21 PM (GMT)
very cute!
You say you did this on computer and not hand? The only critique I would make would be on the background itself, as you said. The bricks up front could use a more drastic shade to 3-D them a bit, and there could me more shadow difference in the foreground/background of the cave along the floorline.
if that made any sense whatsoever.
All in all, I wouldn't be able to tell that you did it CG at all, it looks really well done!
JW% - August 24, 2006 08:00 PM (GMT)
I like the transformer. Incorporating all the parts like that gives a good sense of how the transformation is supposed to take place. A modified version of SpyStreak if I'm not mistaken.
Personally I think the background looks fine. It's minimalistic, but sits extremely well with the rest of the image. A little practice is all you need if you're not happy with it, because I think it looks great.
Roadbuster - August 25, 2006 03:28 PM (GMT)
oh, don't get me wrong, it DOES look great... for some reason I could see it animated...
Cyberpumpkin - August 26, 2006 08:54 AM (GMT)

Heh heh, thanks you guys!
Roady, I actually drew it and colored the characters on paper, then scanned it to do some additional coloring. I ended up going pretty drastic on the background, but the piece was kinda screwy from the beginning, because even though I came up with the concept of it being in a big cavern (in Hell, natch), I didn't come up with somewhere for the lighting to be coming from, and it
really shows.
JW%,
good eye! I really dig SpyStreak's transformation engineering, so I based this character's structure (if not the actual shape) on that toy.
Cyberpumpkin - August 26, 2006 10:36 AM (GMT)

Yeah, my team is challenging another team at work in Connect 4. There's more to it than just the Connect 4 game (job performance decides how many checkers each team gets, etc.), but my manager wanted us to come up with some kind of challenge to issue to this other manager's team, so Connect 4 was the brilliant idea (last month it was Battleship), and I just went crazy designing a poster for the challenge.
This is a crappy scan of a really pretty decent coloring job. If I ever want to show it off "for real" online, I'll probably just scan the line-art and CG it from scratch.
JW% - August 27, 2006 05:44 AM (GMT)
Yes... but are you Red or Black checkers?
Sorry, I now have an urge to use design a cheap and easy Connect Four game using Veiwtiful Joe and Greater_UltraMan as player characters...
I've been playing to much with the game designer.
And I just finished a SpyStreak sprite, so I've been working with a superdeformed version of that little guy already, just kinda got me interested when I saw it. Personally I think your design is actually an upgrade(the wings becomming the skirt, the addition of HANDS, ect...

You know, a game where you select the column and then the guy jumps onto the screen and slams the checker into the slot would be kinda funny and cool.
Sorta like an over-the-top game called C4? It would be the boardgame analogy to what Guilty Gear is to beat-em-up games (which is why they call Guilty Gear et. al. "nuke-em-ups").
Cyberpumpkin - September 8, 2006 07:40 AM (GMT)
Here's something that I found during another archeological dig: This time I was cleaning out the
trunk of my car in preparation for my vacation. Apparently, I brought it out to my car after cleaning out my desk at work, and it's been there ever since.
The original date was July 3, 2005.

I used one or two of the design ideas from
this piece, and a little bit of Link-ness, and some Egyptyness thrown in, since I was running out of grey marker and decided to make the main color in the dungeon orangey.
Roadbuster - September 8, 2006 02:41 PM (GMT)
and by 'this piece' he means :

very nice! Are these just random characters? I mean, the one guy is very Link-ish, but since I don't really know much about Zelda, I don't know about the others...
Starshooter - September 8, 2006 03:54 PM (GMT)
I really, really like the blue winged scarab. my first thought was "That would make a great tattoo!"
Cyberpumpkin - October 1, 2006 09:36 AM (GMT)
Roadbuster - Yeah, those are random characters. The Link-ish one is meant to be, sort of, but she actually has longer hair and she's wearing a green pointy hair bandanna, but you can't really tell from the angle and the minimalistic drawing. I like the little axe guy, and the mage is really fun to draw, but I've never thought of anything else to do with them.
Starshooter - Hee, thanks! It would make a cool tattoo, now that you mention it.

The ubermanager who gets me to do art projects wants me to do some Charlie Brown themed stuff for the Halloween season. His priority was for me to do something Snoopy-related, and he loaned me his copy of
Peanuts: A Golden Celebration: The Art and the Story of the World's Best-Loved Comic Strip (Paperback) to use for references.
This book was a great reference, because it shows Charlie Brown comics from from their creation as the "Lil' Folks" comic, up through the end of the 1990's, with comments from Schulz himself.
My favorite part? Reading that the title "Peanuts" had been foisted onto him by publishers, and that he had been mightily pissed (as well as confused) by the title. This confirmed something that I had thought since I was old enough to think: The name "Peanuts" doesn't make sense, doesn't really fit, and it should just be called "Charlie Brown".
Apparently, Mr. Schulz thought so too.
Although I used existing Peanuts comics in the making of this image, I thought it was worth showing because 1) I did it without using a computer at any point and 2) it resembles something Charles Schulz
might have done. I had a small collection of Charlie Brown books as a kid, and although my interest had waned in the last 20 years or so, I had a lot of fun doing this image, trying to get it as close as possible to the artist's own hand, and I think I did pretty well. I made sure to get the right crinkle in Charlie Brown's grumbly mouth, the right size and bend to Snoopy's mischeivous grin, and made sure to leave the reflection off Snoopy's nose (which is only shown on side-views, for some reason).
I have to thank my coworker, Dee, for the idea for Charlie Brown's Halloween costume. I had been planning to leave him un-costumed, but she mentioned that she always thought he ought to wear a dinky little cowboy hat. That, with the addition of a couple of minimalistic pistol-holders and a badge, and I had a costume for him that was a departure from his classic "ghost with too many eyeholes", but still captures the essence of Charlie Brown's existence with the hat that's too small.
The most difficult part wasn't actually the drawing but the
lettering. I finally had to give up trying to imitate his distinctive and incredibly even nib pen style. I'm not crazy about the lettering I used, but it'll be okay. If I had had all the time in the world, I would have cut and pasted individual words to get the look right, but without a computer at work, the lettering would have taken hours by itself, and the fact is that my ubermanager's just not that fussy.

I did this drawing as a quick thank-you note for someone helping me out at work the other day. I actually don't know her that well, so I stuck to nice, safe subjects that very few people are allergic to. I was surprised at how readily identifiable the brownies are: I hadn't expected them to look so much like brownies. I win!

So... she'd break out if you had a bowl of peanuts in the picture? And what if she's lactose intolerant?!
Excellent job on the Charlie Brown, if I saw it in a book, I'd assume it was Schultz's. And I went back and found a Peanuts comic strip, and couldn't tell much difference even in the writing. Great job!
Cyberpumpkin - October 16, 2006 08:48 AM (GMT)
Thanks a lot, Roady! That's really what I was looking for. Glad to know I hit the mark!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been another fairly long week at work, but at least the good is seeming to balance out the bad, and I actually have 2 different art projects going at the same time, so unless they absolutely can't live without me doing something else, I've been working on those.
It occurred to me that one reason I'm starting to feel a little down is because I haven't made time to do any drawing just for fun. So during the times when I wasn't working on a project for work, I decided to do this fun little design, partly just for the fun of it, partly to give one version or another to my good friend Dee when I move to another department next week (she's sad about that) and partly to make fun of people who start flapping their hands and ducking crazily whenever a bee shows up.

I never knew I had much of an interest in bees, or any insects, for that matter. I guess it just kind-of snuck up on me as diverse outside influences happened to suggest bee-related ideas. In this case, I mostly included the bee as something to draw a wild, overdesigned frame around a simple iconic subject.

The fun of drawing a piece like this is partly in allowing it to grow organically: I start out with just a few simple concentric circles and maybe X and Y axes through the center, and then I just start adding elements, filling in and connecting and repeating patterns but not worrying too much about perfect symmetry and simply incorporating any imperfections in the symmetry rather than trying to fix them or cover them up.
The design of the bee itself was inspired by the bees that are sometimes found in
Gir's head. I even included
Jhonen Vasquez's signature square eye-centers. Naturally, I also gave it a nice goofy and unfocused but happy expression.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally I'm done with both art projects I was working on for my job! It's been a lot of fun, but because of those I've barely had energy to do any personal art. It was worth it, though.

The first piece I did after the Charlie Brown one (posted here Oct 1) was a picture of Lucy. I didn't think of Wonder Woman immediately, but once it occurred to me it seemed like such a no-brainer, it was so perfect for her! She's one of the only characters I bothered putting in her own picture, but, hey, it's Lucy. She'd want it that way.

The other character who got his own drawing was Linus. Once I'd gotten on the superhero costume track, it was hard to get away from it, but Linus using his blanket as a Superman cape was so obvious and timely, I had to use that idea. Luckily, I also found this great picture of him in the pumpkin patch which I was able to replicate with the addition of the costume.

One idea that popped into my head almost immediately when I started thinking of superhero costumes was Peppermint Patty and Marcie dressed up as Batman and Robin. I loved the idea because I can totally see Patty wanting to dress up as Batman, and naturally Marcie would just go along with it in the sidekick outfit.
I had fits trying to figure out how to get Batman's cowl on Peppermint Patty and still have it obviously be her and keep the drawing looking as authentic as possible. I realized that it would make just as much sense with her not wearing the cowl, having it thrown back and checking out her candy haul and making comments to Marcie.

Once I got started on the superhero costume idea, I started casting about for some way to get Spider Man in there somewhere, since he's also widely recognizable as well as one of my favorites. I didn't want to repeat the mask-off trick I did with Peppermint Patty, so I thought it was especially appropriate to have Pigpen in the Spider Man costume, since he's one of the only characters who would be easily identifiable even if his costume covers him head-to-toe.
I wanted to have a second character there actually seeing Pigpen in his costume. Since I hadn't done any X-Men costumes but their movies have been popular lately, plus Sally's hair already resembles Wolverine's, I thought "Why not?"

The last piece I was able to do before my time ran out featured Snoopy, Woodstock and Snoopy's brother, Spike. I had played around with the idea of putting one of the kid characters in a mummy costume. Since I had already used the Pigpen for the Spider Man costume, I thought about putting the mummy costume on Snoopy, who obviously has a distinct silhouette. But after I decided on a little bat costume for Woodstock, having Snoopy in anything other than a Dracula outfit didn't seem right, so I recruited Spike.
I feel somewhat conflicted about how I'm supposed to feel about these drawings. Obviously, stylejacking Charles Schulz isn't the most difficult job because of his characters' simple designs and the finite number of poses he uses. On the other hand, I guess it did take some creative energy to match the different characters up with appropriate costumes. At least I can feel good about being the person on my job site who could have done a project like this, and that I was chosen to do it.
Roadbuster - October 16, 2006 03:33 PM (GMT)
That bee thing is great! I like the red version to throw my 2 cents in. It looks a lot brighter and more.... 'right' than the purple (purple seems too dark for bees)
For the Schultzisms:
I love the super-hero costume theme for them!
You shouldn't feel too conflicted about them (but get permission before doing anything real of course...) Imitation is the finest form of flattery, and anyone can see that these pics were done with complete respect for the characters and the original artist!
I do have 2 critiques on the first two... ;)
I would put something on the bag that Lucy is holding... Trick or Treat or something. it just looks like a grocery bag at the moment to me.
Linus' arm seems long. maybe fill in with a vine or something.
Other than that they all look *great*
Any chance of coloring them?
Any way we could twist your arm to do a 'group' shot with all of them in super-hero motiff?
Prisma Nova - October 16, 2006 04:33 PM (GMT)
I like them too! They're adorable. And a coloring will definately bring them more to life.
As for the concentric pictures with the bee, it is interesting that the process of drawing makes you happy. The way you describe the process of your creation is the same as in drawing and coloring a mandala:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MandalaAlso the shape and coloring makes me think of a mandala. I think your ani-mandalas are well done, very colorful.
Dr Archeville - October 16, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
Shouldn't Peppermint Patty & Marcie be done up as Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn? ;)
[ great stuff, CP! ]
Swoop - October 16, 2006 09:16 PM (GMT)
More importantly the mummy needs Spike's hat.
Yes, CP does some cute and fun stuff. I want stickers of that bee design.
Cyberpumpkin - October 17, 2006 10:36 AM (GMT)

Hey everybody! I'm going all fritzy from trying to stay awake, but it's done!
http://www.cafepress.com/cyberpumpkinI finally got everything set up, and I've got the first OH NOES! A BEE! design available on demand from cafepress.com, on black or white shirts, and regular and mini-buttons.
Swoop, sorry, but cafepress doesn't make round stickers, and they seem a little too expensive anyway. If you can print stickers at home, though, be my guest.
Anyway, I promise I'll reply to everyone's comments once I get back from work tomorrow!
Roadbuster - October 17, 2006 02:40 PM (GMT)
That's great!! I'm gonna have to get one of the shirts

Watch Out! Samuranger!Jeez, talk about thread necromancy. Well, it's the first thing I've drawn in a long time, so I'm sharing it here, in my old art thread, rather than cluttering the place with a new thread.
It's a samurai-themed sentai character in a dungeon-adventurey setting; just what it looks like, in other words. It was originally drawn on paper using pencils, ink and marker and I added more shading and light-effects digitally (partly to make up for the general washing-out my scanner does, and partly to save time, marker-ink and headache).

*hums song made up on the spot*
Samuranger there knows evil is about, his sword is drawn and his stance is ready... but does he see the cyclopse ninja on the wall as well as the fanged slime on the floor? The battle will soon tell!

Funny you should say that: I'm actually thinking about drawing some follow-up pieces, and I'm trying to decide how the battle should go. I love throwing around ideas, if you've got any that would be original and fun!

Heh heh, thanks! I actually posted those over a year ago, so it's kind-of a blast from the past seeing them again. I'm still really happy with how they turned out.
It's been a long time since I had anything I really felt like sharing specifically around here. I figure if people really want to see my stuff, they'll check out my art blog, but if there's popular demand (or if people just have phobias of Myspace, which I understand), I'll transplant the last year's worth over to here.
