Title: JaggedWing's Sprite Art
Description: Smilies... Emoticons... They're SPRITES!

JW% - October 5, 2007 01:45 AM (GMT)
Sprites are animated pixel artworks used in video games.

Mind you, not ALL my work is sprites.

:twitch: Is a scratch icon, which I kept within the parameters of the standard Smilies we have on this board. :) Most of which I don't like.

 Same thing, only I'm not sure why it hasn't been uploaded yet.((EDIT: It's been uploaded!))

:symbols: Also all my own work(s), all scratch. Here is the COMPLETE collection of them.user posted image

For those who don't know those symbols From top left going right:
First Row
Autobot, G2 Autobot, "Ancient Autobot", Autobot/Decepticon Alliance, Lilwall's Fleet(Admiral Lilwall was a poster on another forum I frequented and occasionally he posted here as well... Skycat was part of his fleet if you remember her), Cult of the Fist(Zabgoth's forums... er... lifestyle choice...)
Second Row
Decepticon, G2 Decepticon, "Counter Cybertron", I forget(a Hotwheels transforming robot line that died quickly and mercifully, that's the villains logo), The Fnord Empire, (Final space blank)
Third Row
Maximal, BM Maximal, Mutant(also served as the Hero logo for the Hotwheels transforming robots who I can't remember the name of), Noble/Savage(logo on "Beast Changer"s spark), Eye of Primus(Angel Rose's if you remember her)(Final space blank)
Fourth Row
Predacon, Vehicon, Blenditron, Dinobot, Quintesson(Final space blank)
Fifth Row
Minicon, Earth Defence Force, Cobra, Dominion of Monkies, Cult of Zarak(well... one of the Zarak logos)(Final space blank)

If I can get a good look at the Transfandom logo I'll include that.
I miss Skycat and AngelRose...

:slurp: THIS is actually an edit of Nklesch's Icons. He does good work. I use his icons frequently as referance materials but I try not to tread on his works to much(I have my own style anyway). For referance, I almost completely changed the colors(they're still grey, but not the shades he had and not as WELL shaded either) changed the helmet, changed the mouth, and added everything that's animated. The "Tounge" is a tentacle from Megaman Xtreme, which I use only because I'm lazy. This "Smily" is due for an update, I notice shading changing during the animation, and my original envisioning included drool. Lots of drool. But BZ liked my prototype so it's up for you to use.

user posted image This is ALL Nklesch's work. Only thing I did was compile it. All stolen stuff... probably why BZ hasn't put it up yet.

:baby:  THESE are a combination of Nklesch's Icons, edited of course, and my more standard sprites. I rather like how the kissing Convoy one turned out, but once more Legion's drool is somewhat halfhearted and done quickly to get the thing on the board. I'll want to fix it someday. Soon.

:doc: That's a sprite. My work, back when I was using NES Megaman as a base for Everything. The Dancing Chibi Cthulhu was worth keeping though. It's so cute it's maddening!

:streak: This one works best when Marqueed so it actually runs. DrA has been known to streak(LightSlayer and BluePhoenix have streaking sprites like this as well, though not uploaded). You've been warned.

All animations for FnorDoM members. Yet oddly only this has been put on the list: :firefly:

Also on the subject of Firefly/Phyrefly... when she changed her characters name and revealed Machsaber's are of the character, I did this one:user posted image Originally I was told her characters design was Purple and Grey with white accents. I went from there with my imagination, including making the wings just vents that created flames(in the shape of wings). I'm not sure how much Mach Sabre was instructed and how much he let his imagination run wild while drawing, but given how much trouble it was to tear the "Purple and grey" description out of her I'm betting alot.

user posted image Quick Fieldguide to Old Members as they appeared in the thread. Read it for debate.

Banner I did, intending to do the entire Season One opening in animation. I actually have a more complete one with SoundWave and Jazz going hand to hand, but it doesn't finish. Yet.

:rod: When The Rod was first introduced I figured I'd take my already made Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime sprite(which was going to go in a game) and... play dress up.

Mind you, I already did an Optimus Prime in that hat, so I think he'd have something to say about that. :pimp: "You. Are. Not. Hot. Rod!" As they say in Warped.

:krem: I didn't like the unanimated Kremzeek :kremzeek: (NOT made by me... I have no clue where it came from). I had a choice of either animating it(and when I zoomed in I saw it had some nasty color loss issues that I couldn't correct) or I could start from a sprite(MegamanII monkey robot) and make my own. You see what I picked. Honestly, at this point, I'm not sure which is better.

BlackZarak had a request for the dweller of the depths to be made, animated eating Kremzeek. I haven't gotten around to the interaction part(probably will soon, the energy net is easy enough), but I DID do this: :dweller:

BlackZarak also has a request for Movie Jazz's death scene... that's going to take quite a bit more work. A Movie Optimus "My bad..." emoticon/smilie would also be cool. Not sure how to do either of those. Plus all the FnorDoM are at risk to get a new animated icon at any time. It's a side effect of me putting around trying to make a FnorDoM video game.

Roadbuster mentioned, inspired by Dark Mousette, that I should make this one :killsmurf: Turned out pretty well I think. I had the Sharkticon for some time now(made from Toadman and Metalman from the respective Megaman games), the smurf is a modified Mario from SMB3.

user posted imageFor the life of me I can't remember why I ripped these sprites from Shantae... cool game though.user posted image

:ultragear: Straight from the Japanese Game Boy Color Beast Wars fighting game, the character select Icons. Cheetor of course is "Ultragear"!

The rest however...

Well, you may not WANT to use them. They kinda clash with everything else. Then again, who ever said we had taste?

There, I think I've covered all my recent uploads. As they're added to the AUG I'm taking them off my Geocities site(and I'm switching from remote linking to my site to the AUG version).

This compiles them all for the Mods to sort through and upload at their leisure. Any new stuff I do will be added to this thread first.

Now, normally I'd open the floor to comments and critizism... I'm not sure I can handle much critizism, most of this was just fun stuff I made during my free time without much effort. So yeah, it's not fabulous art, and alot of it's stole... borrowed from other sources anyway.

However, I suppose I could open the floor to Requests for future stuff.
A request of any canonical Transformers character will probably be easy for me. I have nearly all of them in sprite form already. There are a few, particularly in Energon, that I'm awaiting referance pics(or rather the toy for me to play with and view from all sides) on... and I haven't started the Movie or Animated characters yet.

Dark Mousette91 - October 5, 2007 03:47 AM (GMT)
can't wait to see you make me into a sprite

check out my new avvie for reference

Prisma Nova - October 5, 2007 10:33 AM (GMT)
Great job, JW%! Really, this will bring out smiles every time we post. :D
There is nothing to criticize.

Computron - October 5, 2007 02:40 PM (GMT)
Excelent job! Can't wait to see more stuff from you, the "arteeste".

Roadbuster - October 5, 2007 03:31 PM (GMT)
I love that G1 opening one every time I see it...

Am I the only one with a copy of Roadbuster Transforming?

(and that spellcheck thing is damned annoying... I tried to make it work too!)

(AND BZ is soley responsible for what gets uploaded in the icon tray.)

Firefly - October 5, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
Oh come on, "purple and grey" isn't enough of a description for you? Geeeez.

I really feel like I said purple and black anyway. :P

Prisma Nova - October 5, 2007 04:54 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that intro is quite awesome! Add sound to it, and we have a nice little header for AUG.

Oh, look, its Firefly! Can I have an autograph, Miss Gryphon? :firefly:

Firefly - October 5, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
Sure can. :)

JW% - October 6, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
You said grey! ARGH! *Goes around pulling his hair out and acting crazy like Firefly always seems to make him act*

******

You're the only one with THAT version, yes RB.

Mainly because the original version had the transformation into a tank rather than an armored jeep(let's hear it for referance pictures people!). So somebody else re-did the vehicle mode(you I think... could have been Bladewing). When I saw it I wondered why nobody had color corrected the robot mode to match the vehicle mode.

For any games I'm using the color corrected one. I've got the .gif around here somewhere...

user posted image

Ah... that used the wrong motar blast animation, but still you get the point.

Computron is an official character. I already have a Computron sprite on file, along with all the Technobots(and Aerialbots, Protectobots, Constructicons, Stunticons, Combaticons...)... no animations for them though.

Oh, and I love your Sig line. For some reason I'm spacing on the animes name however.

******

As for Dark Mousette...

user posted image

This is the player character for my quickly made game "Spook House"(for lack of a better name). Check my "Arcade" thread to download and play the game. One could assume it's Dark Mousette without wings. I have wings that I'll eventually add when this get's animated. I'm going to keep tinkering with it however, at the moment it just doesn't look how I want it to.

squee!! i'm gonna have a smiley soon!

fun fact: the image i got for my avatar is really a smiley from deviantart of someone called mangapunksai...it looked the way i thought a 'dark mousette' should look

JW% - October 6, 2007 07:51 AM (GMT)
Now for information you probably don't care about:

Roadbuster's sprite is made from MegamanV(SuperGameboy) Mars. Mind you, that character had minimal animations, so the legs are actually a heavily modified YamatoMan from Megaman6(NES). Originally, because I did not have referance pictures for the alt mode of the character I designed a tank alt mode(I mistakenly based it on a knockoff transformer I found who looked similar in robot mode). The shoulder cannon actually looked better on the tank. However, BladeWing got ahold of it, and since he had decent referance pictures he redid the alt mode into the proper jeep(from scratch, where as the tank had base I had used) with mounted gun. Since then I've added more animation frames, but oddly no jumping animation yet(his jump animation frame is also his mid-step animation frame).

I originally planned Roadbuster to have a Contra like level in the FnorDoM video game. This probably will not come to pass. Instead I'm expecting him to have standard plateform jumping like the rest of FnorDoM. In robot mode he doesn't move very fast, but once transformed he has a pretty good ground speed. His jumping ability will be pretty minimal however. Given that he can shoot in five different directions(the motar shell firing in an arch), and his armor rating in the game is the highest of any player character, the air power limitation seems balanced. I'm currently wondering how to code it so that while driving at full speed he can impact enemies(typically Sharkticons) and knock them around/destroy them. I number of possiblities would work.

I've also done several sprite of him wearing his bunny slippers, chefs hat, "kiss the cook" apron, and wielding his chili stirring spood. My current project is to make an animation of him in that full outfit while still in action. Or perhaps an animation of him throwing off the apron to transform.

ALL my sprites are a constant 'work in progress'. I may rework them from the ground up, or I may just add a frame or two of animation.

*******

The pseudo Dark Mousette was made by modifying Kalinka from Megaman5(NES). Took off the hat, turned the hair purple(and tried to make it a bit spikier), the eyes red(and half closed them instead of the wide eyed innocent look). Colored the red coat into dark grey/black, and made the boots match. Changed the lip color to black(the red was bleeding into the eyes, yuck) and lightened the skintone. Then I cut off the sleeves for some reason I don't remember.
What I was going for was a cross between the Gaia avatar that had been in Dark Mousette's sig line, and Dark Mousy from DNAngel. I have a pretty cool music video I downloaded from Choco AMV's. "[Maria] D.N.Angel - Hakanai Diamond [8CFFF7AE]" is the file name. Since I can no longer access that site I'm willing to bet there is no way you can find that vid. I used that for the referance image of Dark Mousy(he's wearing a sleevless shirt). I'm also going to use it for the animation, though it's actually Krad(well his host transforming into Krad) who's doing the whole "crusified" pose while his angel wings tear out of his back in a swirl of feathers.
Feathers are a pain to do in sprite form.
Favorite scene from the vid is from presumably the final fight in the anime. Dark and Krad are locked in mid air combat, Krad grabs the hero and tries to strangle him, and Dark violently sweeps his angel wings forward, slicing off Krad's angel wings(feathers going everywhere).

That Deviant Art differs from what I have in: Blue eyes, Bat Wings, and little demon horns. Other than that it's sorta what I was going for, only in a different style(looks sorta like Magical Drop style).

*******

I'm perfectly willing to accept requests for canonical Transformers characters. I have a large number already, but not the full set. Some of them, particularly the rare ones, I've probably overlooked. Of course I can't promise I'll work on them unless inspiration strikes(I STILL havn't finished Deathbringer, I can't remember if that was requested or if I decided to do it on my own though).

Non-canonical characters, particular fan ones, are pretty much going to be refused on principle unless I could come up with a good use for them. Putting them into a video game, or sprite comic or something.

Yes, Blade Raider and Agent X are going to get something... if only so I can parody Warped and T.A.O.W.A.R. Though Parody is a relative thing with those I think.

Computron - October 6, 2007 06:35 PM (GMT)
Not at all onesama, just finished, from 9am to 2pm, all is good.

BlackZarak - October 6, 2007 07:00 PM (GMT)
I hadn't found the Bumblebee emoticon yet, or I somehow misplaced it. I usually add 'em as soon as I see 'em.

BTW: If you have any that would make good replacements for our old yellow smilies, I'd be more than happy to phase the old ones out in favor of new, TF-based ones.

Dark Mousette91 - October 7, 2007 05:08 PM (GMT)
holy cow! jw knows his DNAngel!

BlackZarak - October 7, 2007 08:31 PM (GMT)
BTW, JW, if you want to make a corrected Legion sprite with drool, I would happily replace the current one with it. I noticed the shading changes at the temples, too. The drool would make it more disturbing. heh

JW% - October 9, 2007 05:04 AM (GMT)
I haven't managed to get the drool quite right. Water(well, thick slime) effects in pixels is... difficult.

I'll see about the other smilies, but that's REALLY Cyberpumpkins domain, not mine.

This: :peek: could probably replace  ... maybe... I dunno.

If you could however... replace this: :roady: with this: user posted image Just watching the robot modes "off black" outline go into full black outline for the vehicle mode offends my sensibilities. Mind you, I shouldn't complain, because it's just Bladewing fixing my former mistake anyway...

Starshooter - October 9, 2007 02:24 PM (GMT)
We could really use a good 'wtf' sprite.

Icefang - October 9, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
Maybe it could be a sprite of a tree on Cybertron. heh.

QUOTE (Icefang @ Oct 9 2007, 12:20 PM)
Maybe it could be a sprite of a tree on Cybertron. heh.

Better, Primus in bot mode with a tree growing out of his head :P

Also like to see :thumb: replaced with Prime giving a thumbs up and add a Megatron giving a thumbs down to go with it.

Btw, awesome sprites JW%. Can watch that G1 intro all day :sharky:

BlackZarak - October 9, 2007 08:51 PM (GMT)
I think a great "WTF" Sprite would be Unicron's head. He could start out intact, then his mouth opens into a scream, and his eyes explode. heh

That would fit so many situations.

BlackZarak - October 9, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
Quintesson Faces could definitely be used for emoticons. heh

I think the Quint Death face would make a great "thumbs down" icon heh

JW% - October 10, 2007 12:52 AM (GMT)
Actually, I was going to do a Unicron with eyes exploding out(also thought about OpPrimal with his eyes and mouth exploding out while in the alien "bungalo"), but both my version and Nicks are to small when compared against Legion there.

Which Quintesson? I've got some Quintessons already...

user posted image

They count as official Canonical TF characters.

Also had this one for Dreadnought, he'd welcome new arrivals with

user posted image

A NUKE! Which I suppose I could do better, but I ripped that straight from Metal Storm and I like it.

Oh, and the drool layer is turned off, but the color corrected verison...
:slurp: user posted image Not a major change however.

Roadbuster - October 10, 2007 03:23 PM (GMT)
heh... nice little quints. Those would be fun (but why are they so yellow on the bottom?)

JW% - October 10, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
The quintessons I designed in parts. First part was the faces. I did a front on view of each face. Then I did a side-ish view. Then I did the "main body" which is a grey sphere/upside down teardrop that ends in a glowing pulse of energy. In the cartoon, that energy beam was a sorta white/pink that defied coloration(80s energy effect, lots of fun!) in the comic however I believe the energy beams were usually colored Yellow or white. And I prefer yellow. Same goes for my quintesson lawyer, scientist, and mage. I DO however need to work on giving them more tentacles...

speaking of unusual coloring, another Prisma Nova:user posted image I've been working on it for awhile but had more pressing concerns and it kept getting shuffled into the back. Her two sig line animations were supposed to be three.

I mention it for funny colors because initially her flexible sword/whip wasn't meant to have a thermal power to it. I used the colors for editing purposes, figured it looked good, and then asked if I could use them for the character. She liked it, so new addition!

BlackZarak - October 10, 2007 08:49 PM (GMT)
For the Quins, I was thinking just the faces alone. No egg-body. Each about the size of the movie Bumblebee head. That way each face can represent a different feeling.

Yeah, the Unicron head sprite could be bigger, about the size of Boo.

Prisma Nova - October 10, 2007 09:31 PM (GMT)
Don't I look cute with that flaring sword? :D
Now I can torture victims and still look cool! :novatrix:

Thanks JW%!

*SmOOoooOOOch-grab-squeeze-smOoooooooch-whip-smoOOOoOOOch*

JW% - October 10, 2007 10:14 PM (GMT)
Anyway, I'll sort out the Quintesson faces. I also have some Alpha Q faces(but havn't managed the body yet). They're about the same size as twitching frenzy... which might make them a bit small.

For referance, Boo there is 40x40 I haven't been limiting myself to sizes really, just going with what works(I average around 50x50, which is probably what Unicron is going to be). The LARGEST smilie on the list there is :firefly: at 100x50

It's the wings, makes her slim and trim body have to wear a size bigger.

JW% - October 11, 2007 02:55 AM (GMT)
Removed a few from my site, since they had been added to the Smilies list.
I'll go back and edit my post so they're visible again(switching image sources).

Testing Unicron for size and look...

Does that work? It's actually pretty heavily edited(yes originally it was Nicks), but you probably can't tell since it's not animated yet.

Also something for Dark Mousette.

They were MEANT to be sprites in a video game, not emoticons or smilies... I think they might be to small.

1st panel (left to right): Roadbuster, Prisma Nova (on shoulder), Computron, Blade (Me!), JW%, BZ.
2nd panel: The Rod, Agent X, Stingray?, Dark Mousette, No clue (?), and No clue(?)
Have no clue on who's in the 4th panel. Other site you go to or something?

Roadbuster - October 11, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
Blurr's Main Squeeze and Cheese I believe...

Dark Mousette91 - October 11, 2007 10:18 PM (GMT)
i'm with roadbuster

JW% - October 12, 2007 03:00 AM (GMT)
Looks like they're identifiable.

Comments(mostly personal) from Left to right:

Must animate Roadbuster in full cooking outfit... animating running with bunnyslippers has prooven difficult... perhaps a "walk cycle" with him scuffing his feet like he's half awake and just rolled out of bed?

Prisma Nova sitting Computrons shoulder... just to cute!

Blade Raider designed from a composite sprite from the NES game Cocoron. Before recoloring he looked like Astro-boy. Only with a bandana and topknot(because the other hair styles were spiky). Cocoron's composite sprite system makes for a quick and easy way to make hundreds of unique characters. Unfortunately most of them are pretty lame(a smily face mounted on a spring for example... that spits pencils as an attack). Blade Raiders gundam avatar was also instrumental in designing the three Minicon weapons from Armada(filling in a few more canonical characters I lacked). While I couldn't use the image directly, they're exactly the same scale.

Going full conversion on BlackZarak to the new larger scale. Should work.

Really need to do a Energon and Cybertron Hotshot sprite... don't know why I never got around to them. "The Rod" might not appreciate being made into Armada Hotshot... Meh, I'll stick with G1 and keep giving him the hat and gold chain. Maybe with a yellow zoot suit. To match his avatar.

Agent X... will be worked on in future updates. Easily identifiable now as Crosswise because of Warped. Had to make a Cybertron Crosswise sprite anyway(been doing alot of Cybertron sprites since TFU updated).

Initially tried to do Stingray the same as Minerva(Masterforce). Without the shoulder pads the look didn't work, so I changed the base. This version seems to work.

Dark Mousette still looks a bit goth... not sure if it's the dark red eyes or not.

Blurr's Main Squeeze initially was going to be Blurr... in a boonie hat. While that looked cool, I decided to go with more of her description given in the Hub. Again, Cocoron came to my rescue(at least three different options are wheels rather than legs, four if you count the cloud).

The dragon is actually just a generic dragon. Could be Cheese, or could be Jade. It came from Jade's sprite sheet(since I put alot of dragons on there), but that doesn't mean it's not Cheese. I wanted there to be some confusion.

Debated pannel three having BlackZarak or maybe Firefly Starshooter and Icefang in the background. Even did a pannel of Firefly showing off more plasma flame tricks while Starshooter watched and scritched Icefangs head(he was in beast mode standing beside her).

Pannel 4 is in referance to City of Heroes, the superhero MMORPG. Those are in game characters. Signature heroes(and villains) who are both important in game NPCs, and also represent the games developers. Should you see these characters in game(other than their NPC roles) they're being played by the game designer as part of a special event. I spent last christmas with Ghost Widow, and my villain has fought against Statesmen and Positron during the City of Villains beta test. Back Alley Brawler has even answered one of my questions on the CoH forums. It's a surprisingly tight game community. At least compared to it's nearest rival World of Warcraft. That said, I don't really communicate with the game developers, and I'm sure the email they(well, it was signed by a Dev that I haven't sprited yet, in the two years there's been some turnover and I don't know what Lighthouse or Castle look like ingame) sent me was automated. Still, told me I was invited to the closed beta testing of the next expansion. I'm so there! Nondisclosure agreement signed!
