Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man
Description: New Spidey 'toon

Dr Archeville - March 7, 2008 06:16 PM (GMT)
Premieres this Saturday on the CW.

It will be in an anime-esque style similar to Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Jackie Chan Adventures. The series is set to have a similar plot to that of the Ultimate Spider-Man comics.

Josh Keaton will voice Peter Parker (he's voiced Spidey in several recent video games)
Peter MacNicol will voice Doc Ock
Lacey Chabert will voice Gwen Stacy
Vanessa Marshall will voice Mary Jane Watson
Robert Englund will voice the Vulture
Tricia Helfer will voice Felicia Harding/Black Cat

I'm not going to judge this show until it is well under way (I disliked The Batman at first because it wasn't Bruce Timm's DCAU, but It grew to be quite enjoyable).

However Spidey's design just dosen't look quite right. It looks like an 8 year old is wearing the Spider-Man Costume, but hey, after a few epsiodes of being immersed in the shows design, it might look alright.

I <3 Lacey Chabert

Dr Archeville - March 9, 2008 12:40 PM (GMT)
Anyone else see it?

I'm not thrilled on the opening song/credits. That's one of my only two criticisms.

Seems to be taking place 4 months after Parker got bit (at Connor's lab). While he's been active as Spidey, he's been something of an urban legend, with folks not really knowing if he exists or not (and one cop saying he's not really doing much good since most of the crooks he captures walk). He, Harry Osborn & Gwen Stacey are all close friends at high school, while Parker's other friend, Eddie Brock, has moved on to college (and works with Connors as an intern). No sign of MJ yet.
And, yes, Spidey does banter. A lot.

First ep had Spidey catching two jewelry store crooks, one identified as Flint Marko and the other unnamed. (Marko will become Sandmna, and I predict the unnamed crook will become Rhino.) Later, an unseen crime-boss -- presumably Kingpin, though Wikipedia says it's Frederick Foswell/Big Man; voiced by the awesome Keith David -- hires the Enforcers to take care of Spidey. At the same time, Spidey had to deal with the Vulture, who was after Osborn b/c Osborn had based his flight system off of Toomes's own flight system, yet gave no credit.
(Disney's Gargoyles had a nice cameo at the very beginning, with Spidey swinging by Hudson and the Trio. Greg Weisman, creator of Gargoyles, is the producer for this show.)

Second ep introduced Electro, created in a lab accident at Connors' lab. He blamed Connor's for the accident and wanted him to cure him. At first he just wanted to be left alone and go home, but his uncontrolled discharges caused havoc; later he went and demanded Connor's cure him. In the fight a stray blast hit Connor's injector of his latest lizard formula, which I'm guessing is going to amp it up and be more' effective' than his other do-nothing lizard serums.
Also in this ep, Parker tries to get work at the Daily Bugle, and offers pics of Spider-Man, which no one has. Jameson kicks him out, then realizes photos of Spidey would help sell papers, so he offers a cash reward for whoever can bring in pics of Spidey.
And Parker tries to tutor painfully hip and popular Liz Allen (Flash Thompson's girl). She brushes him off at first, but changes her tune when he flat out tells her "look, you need this tutoring, not me; call me when you're ready to learn."

My other criticism? Connors is sporting a bionic arm to replace his lost one, though still also experimenting with lizard-based regeneration serums. IMO, giving him a bionic arm changes the character a fair amount.

Agent X - March 9, 2008 03:35 PM (GMT)
With what I saw, I liked it. I really like the way the mask's eyes emote (even thought that really can't happen).

If I'm up, which I try to be for Transformers, I'll definently watch it. Hell it comes on after transformers (well the 2nd one did) and I have a hard time just getting up in time for Ttransformers.

Also saw "The Batman: Lost Heroes". From what I heard, that was the series finale. Seemed kinda weak to end HIS show with the Justice League, taking care of a JL-type threat in Batman's own show. Maybe if every loon in Arkam got out and it was Batman (with Robin and Batgirl) versus everyone else, that (IMO) would've been better. They could've mentioned the alien thing to explain why the JL couldn't help Bats. But then, I didn't watch the show all the way from the beginning so it may be different for those who has.

I liked what I saw, as I only taped the second ep by accident, and then my sat dish is going wonky and cutting out every couple of min.

So in it doing so I didnt realize that it was Conners till almost the end of the ep when Electro came in and hollered his name, his bionic arm threw me off.

I'm not in a place where I can watch the Youtubes quite yet, but I'm kinda stoked about this new Spider-Man. I saw the art designs, and I really dig the style. They seem to be able to do a good job with the reduced designs, but not give up the range of motion and expressiveness.

I'm gonna check this out ASAP! Thanks for the links, Rod!

I don't like Spidey's voice. This guy is used way too much for damned near everything else.

Roadbuster - March 10, 2008 03:09 PM (GMT)
Gonna watch this afternoon!

O.Supreme - March 10, 2008 05:47 PM (GMT)
I was out all weekend, thank goodness my old VCR worked this time :). Anyway, I am not thrilled with the animation in general, but the stories seemed ok. I Liked Robert Englund as Vulture. Fell asleep during the Electro episode, so I'll have to go back & rewatch it. Also, I dont know if it was just my TV or not, but Spidey's eyes seemed to be almost Yellow at times, (like looking at a Spidey comic from 40 years ago that was not well preserved) it just didn't look right

Roadbuster - March 10, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
I watched it and actually I thought it was a really good Spiderman.

My only real complaints:

1.) Aunt May suffers from the 'white haired hottie' instead of 'old lady' problem.

2.) why is Peter's shirt tag always sticking out dammit.

3.) again... we see that despite having immense strength, speed, and agility, two clowns with no superpowers can almost match and defeat him in those categories...

Loved the banter. Liked the voice actor. Don't have a problem with a kid looking like a kid in Spidey costume.

Seeing Toomes was fun, despite the color change on his outfit (and I miss the feathery wings) and nice cameos for future Sandman, Venom, Lizardman, Rhino(probably), and Hammerhead.

Roadbuster - March 11, 2008 10:01 PM (GMT)
Watched the second ep today.
Liked it also, very well written (ok, the eel part is a bit far fetched, but hey, they came up with a decent Electro, AND an interesting 'spidey turned him bad' scenario.)

Heh.. and I happen to LIKE the theme song ;-)

Dr Archeville - March 16, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
Fun ep with Lizard yesterday.

LightSlayer - March 16, 2008 04:05 PM (GMT)

I am surprised how good it has been so far. I am glad they did not rehash the old series and did something different for a change.

Roadbuster - March 17, 2008 02:52 PM (GMT)
Anyone have any Youtube links for the new eps?

Dinobot 2 - March 17, 2008 06:44 PM (GMT)

O.Supreme - March 22, 2008 11:24 PM (GMT)
Todays episode with Shocker really impressed me, unlike the first few. I was really impressed at how this version of parker/spider-man can be even more taunting than previous versions, but still not intentially cruel.

Shocker: "This is my Profession!"

Spidey (in mock hick accent)- "With a voice like that I was thinkin' more like Rodeo Clown!"

Great Stuff! -Oh, and Spidey confirmed Marko's parter was named "O'hirn" (aka Rhino). Mary Jane was mentioned but not seen, and according to Wikipedia (which I know isn't always accurate), the main crime boss in this series is another character known as "Big Man", not Kingpin, but as stated, they could always be wrong.

Next Week - Doc Oc & Sandman

I'm not sure I get what you mean. I looked him up on imdb and he doesn't show up in that many things. Does he do other stuff under an alias?

I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my least favorite Spidey villains (the Vulture) used to good effect. I thought he was pretty fun, possibly because they were able to animate an exciting action sequence between Spidey and Vulture.

I also liked how they started in right away on making sure the audience is in no way sympathetic to Norman Osborne at all from the very get-go, so no matter what turns him into Green Goblin, they won't feel sorry for him even slightly. I forsee this bad guy being very bad indeed.

user posted image Since when is this a problem? Did you happen to catch how attractive they managed to make Helen Mirren look in National Treasure 2?

2.) why is Peter's shirt tag always sticking out dammit.

How would we be able to tell he's kind-of a dork when he's not being picked on?

I too get irritated when Spider-Man (in any version) gets knocked around much, especially by normals. I can mostly dismiss it because he's pretty new to being Spider-Man, and although he's come up with the spider-sense name, maybe he hasn't fully developed it.

I really like the younger look to him, though, and it's about time they made him as much of a smart-alec in a cartoon as he often is in the comics. I always got the feeling that writers were just lazy and got by with limp sarcasm instead of really good, biting jokes. In this one, they seem to put a little more effort into it, and I really appreciate it.

I haven't watched the Shocker episode, but I'm a little surprised that they're going with him so soon, since they just did an electric-guy villain, right? I guess I'll just have to trust that they'll do a good job.

One other comment: I'm kind-of digging some of the old comic touches they're putting into the show. The mask-in-the-sky ending seems very old-school, and I was kinda startled when they did that half-Spidey-face shot at one point. Nowadays, I see that as a so-dumb/corny-it's-enjoyable part of the comic, so it was interesting to see it pop up in the show. I also thought it was cool that they actually have the spider-sense-wavy-lines (a CG updated version) in the show.

As for the theme song, well, if nothing else, it's very up-to-the-minute and it caters to its current target audience. As someone who walks out of Hot Topic (hey, they carry TF merch sometimes) shaking his head at the garbage music they listen to in there, I realize that I am definitely not part of the target demographic for that theme song. But, hey, it's better than "Dragon, dragon, rock the dragon" or the phony-azn "Teen Ti-TAANS" or even "Spider blood, spider blood, radioactive spider blood!"

Shocker doesn't have electrical powers, he's got vibrational (shockwave) powers. He's always been that way.

AutobotWonko - March 23, 2008 11:16 PM (GMT)
It was a good episode. It is interesting they made Fancy Dan the Shocker (for now).

The Big Man was in ASM around the late teens or twenties. He had a silver mask and was killed after a few appearances. I forget how. It was probably to make way for the Green Goblin. I would have to look.

Yeeeahwhoops. My bad. Always thought he was another electric guy. I think it was the "shock" part that mixed me up.

Saw that ep today. Definitely not electrical, in that one. I like the way they showed his power in this version. Very dynamic. He definitely gave Spidey a run for his money.

The Rhino ep was full of win, especially the last 5 minutes or so.

Where can I watch the new episodes online? Youtube removed all the ones I have bookmarked.

Roadbuster - April 14, 2008 03:22 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately The MAN cracked down on the YouTubeness. I haven't been able to find any for the last two new eps. Luckily, they play the new one immediately following Transformers Animated (on a different channel) so I caught the Rhino ep. I missed the Sandman one though.

damn that The Man.

The Rhino was pretty cool though. I liked the way that Spidey uses strategy on a lot of these guys to take them down. Though, Spiderman in the comics always seemed a little stronger than the cartoons tend to make him...
