Hasbro, Inc. today announced that it has reacquired the worldwide distribution rights to the Sunbow Library of Hasbro Classics programming from TV-Loonland, which held the rights to license the content.

Under the terms of the deal, Hasbro has regained ownership of nearly 1,000 episodes of classic programming featuring some of the Company’s most established and well regarded brands, including G.I. JOE, TRANSFORMERS, MY LITTLE PONY and LITTLEST PET SHOP, as well as timeless properties like MR. POTATO HEAD and CONNECT FOUR. This acquisition increases Hasbro’s content library to nearly 2,000 episodes of programming covering over 30 brands.

“As we deliver new immersive entertainment experiences to audiences worldwide, it was extremely important that we had the rights to fully control the usage of our intellectual properties,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s Chief Operating Officer. “Entertainment is becoming increasingly important in helping us to strengthen and build our brands globally, and this will enable us to engage consumers in new and exciting ways.”

“We are very pleased with this deal, which is mutually beneficial for both Hasbro and TV-Loonland,” said Simon Flamank, CEO of TV-Loonland. “It allows us to repay the majority of our outstanding debt and invest in new strategic opportunities, while providing Hasbro with the ability to bring its world-class brands to diverse audiences in new and entertaining ways.”

I hear a lot of hopefull discussion about finally releasing the G1 Japanese TF series in North America..... my question is.... Why now that Hasbro reaquires them is this possible??? Not that I'm complaining but, The U.K. has had them on DVD for years, and yesterday there was an announcement that Madman would release Victory on DVD for Australian R4. Why couldn't Rhino have released these previosly??? --Oh well, the one hope I am still clinging to is that now "perhaps" North America can get a legitimate dub as well as subtitled versions of these series.
(Still holding on to my staright Japanese VHS & English/Cantonese DVD copies until we get them though...)

On a side note, lets bring on- Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends on DVD already!! :)

Yay! It's about time! I hope to see the G1 series released again... and perhaps see the other Japanese versions.

The deal is for Sunbow's Library and as far as I know Sunbow never had anything to do with the Japanese shows. In any case, I hope we get new, less expensive, DVDs out of this.

EDIT: What does Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends have to do with anything? It wasn't even made by Sunbow and Disney currently owns it.

Woo hoo! This opens up the potential for a dvd release of Visionaries!

Icefang - May 14, 2008 08:19 PM (GMT)
yes, and many many more...

BlackZarak - May 14, 2008 09:47 PM (GMT)
It'd be nice to get the full set of Inhumanoids, too.

AutobotWonko - May 17, 2008 04:03 AM (GMT)
And I need the rest of my GI Joe box sets!

Dinobot 2 - May 23, 2008 03:16 PM (GMT)
Oh for the love of Destro, please finish the G.I. Joe DVD sets!!! I just recently rewatched them all and hate how I can't finish up Season 2. I'd want the 90's ones to be put out as well. This seems like great news.

.....Wait Sunbow isn't connected with the 90's G.I. Joe is it?

Dinobot 2 - May 23, 2008 03:26 PM (GMT)
Here's another article. They mention Visionaries and Inhumanoids. Not great news though.

BlackZarak - May 23, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
Their info is incorrect. There were 2 DVDs of Inhumanoids released. The 3rd DVD was not released, so Inhumanoids was incompletely released, like Jem.

Roadbuster - May 23, 2008 04:26 PM (GMT)
Truly, truly outrageous.

:rimshot:

Jem is a whore.

No, the 2 "post movie" seasons released in 1990 & 1991 were produced by DIC (think Inspector Gadget). Although shunned by most GI:Joe fans, I liked how they were ale to draw some sort of "continuity" from the old series, and some of the original voice actors were used as well. "Operation Dragonfire" the first mini-series of that run was pretty darn cool as I recall

I had no idea that Rhino had incomplete releases for so many series (other than Inhumanoids). Hopefully now we can get full sets as previously stated, as well as Visionaries, Bigfoot, and all those other cool short-run sunbow series.

Oh btw.... were Dino-Riders & Robocop Sunbow or Marvel??? ---By the way BR, about your reply, you are partially right. Sunbow re-distributed a lot of the early 80's Marvel toons for syndication in the early 90's, however rights have since been held by Saban then- Disney (Jetix)

Dinobot 2 - May 24, 2008 12:08 AM (GMT)
Man... We'll never get the 90's Joe seasons on DVD..... Although I have a high quality VCD of the Dragonfire Miniseries. Dragonfire was awesome.

5 DVD sets each with 3-4 figures, dioramas, Mass Device peice, and DVD with a 5 part mini-series. There are only 5 miniseries that lenth throughout GI Joe. They are:

"MASS Device" (The first mini-series)
"The Revenge Of Cobra" (Weather Dominator)
"Arise, Serpentor, Arise!" (The first of season 2)
"GI Joe: The Movie" (It was split into 5 episodes)
"Operation Dragonfire" (The first of the DiC series)

Link above shows the first 2 sets. Here's hoping for a Sgt. Slaughter in one of the others.

So, yeah, all the main points of GI Joe will be out by the end of this year. Hope they do this kind of thing for Tranformers' 25th line :D

Sadly that is where GI Joe trounced Transformers, in epic 5-part episodes. While GIJ had 5, TFs only had "Five Faces of Darkness" and the movie (Which I don't count as it was released as a "Movie" both in for and quality but it's included anyway). I'm not sure, Blade or Archangel can probably conform this, but I think GI Joe had more 2-3 parters than Transformers also.

Transformers had:
"FFoD" (5)
"TF:TM" (5)
"The Ultimate Doom" (3*)
"More than Meets the Eye." (3) (to be included with 25th Annivarsy Optimus Prime)
"Rebirth" (3)
"Key to Vector Sigma" (2)
"Return of Optimus Prime" (2)
"Megatron's Master Plam" (2)
"Dinobot Island" (2)
"Desertion of the Dinobots" (2)

Hell, I"m pretty damn sure "Ducktales" had more 5-parters than Transformers! Though you could count "The Ultimate Doom!" as a four-parter if you inlcluded "Countdown to Extintion".

While multi-parters in Transformers were less often than in GI Joe, it made it seem that much more special when it DID happen.
Actually, IF Hasbro goes the DVD pack route, they may included DVDs from other series.

EDIT: and the DVD packs will include the ENTIRE mini-series?!! I was under the impression Hasbro would be a bastard and included 1 episode per set!

I think I read that a few of those DVD packs would just contain a few favorite episodes on a few. And then Mass Device, Revenge of Cobra, Pyramid of Darkness... I didn't read anything about Operation Dragonfire. Still it would be a good sign if that did happen.

Blade Raider - June 20, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
Meant to post weeks ago that I checked my source and it was just guesswork. Anyways, today proof came out on what each set is and which M.A.S.S. Device peice is.

Set 1 The M.A.S.S. Device - Console & Element Containers
Set 2 The Revenge Of Cobra - Generator
Set 3 Arise Serpentor Arise! - Control Turrent
Set 4 Pyramid Of Darkness - Transport Chassis
Set 5 G.I. Joe Best Of Episodes - Beam Emitter

Still no clue what figures come with Sets 3-5, but here's hoping for Sargent Slaughter.
