Lawrence Kasdan to pen 'Robotech' Big-screen adaptation of the anime classic By Borys Kit June 16, 2008, 01:00 AM
"Robotech" Veteran screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to write "Robotech," Warner Bros.' adaptation of the anime classic.
Additionally, Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are boarding the project as producers, joining Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello.
"Robotech" was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.
A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.
Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce as will Jason Netter.
Crevello and Maguire brought the project to Warners in September.
Matt Reilly and Matt Milam overseeing for Warners.
"Robotech" extends Kasdan's return to the fantasy genre that began last year when he was tapped to pen the "Clash of the Titans" remake for Warners and Thunder Road. Kasdan wrote the screenplays for "Return of the Jedi," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" before penning such works as "The Big Chill" and "Grand Canyon."
He is repped by CAA.

Well, I guess we are in a era of giant robot movies. I think it was due, right after the "Shadow Chronicles", and also, movie industry have the means to make it nice, especially after Transformers. No news for now when it will be release.

(Prisma was so excited she double quoted... I fixed it!)
Hrm... it seems that they are leaning towards a series, which is good. I don't think a movie could do it justice.
Still, I think I'm more afraid of this than anything else.
Prisma Nova - June 16, 2008 04:42 PM (GMT)
(Thanks Roady, I guess I was too excited. I adore Robotech, and for me, this was great news).
I don't think we should be afraid, the industry was just ripe for this sort of movie. Perhaps we might get a trilogy, and it will be an ADAPTATION, with its own cinematographic universe.
I think this is our chance to get some mobile suit action in a live action movie.
Roadbuster - June 16, 2008 04:52 PM (GMT)
oh I see... I had misread, I thought it was talking about making THIS a daily syndicated show.. This is just set for a movie. I hope they do things right... There's a lot in that series (granted, there's also a lot of stuff that can be cut.)
Hrm... do we have ANY other mobile-suit type live action movies so far? I don't think we really do! I never thought about it!
I know that back a looong time ago, they made a mech movie or two that bombed... I don't think I ever saw either.
Roadbuster - June 16, 2008 04:53 PM (GMT)
btw Pris, ever watch Macross-Frontier? I've been watching it on veoh the past week.
Prisma Nova - June 16, 2008 05:02 PM (GMT)
No, but is it on DVD yet?
The thing about Veoh is that some of the clips are too slow for my geriatric iMac. :dweller:
Will look for them. So, is this series right after Shadow Chronicles?
But I have been watching the Robotech series on Space Channel, and believe it or now... on Saturday Mornings now (and rerun on Sunday morning too!). Right now, it is running "New Generation", but prior to that, it was showing the beginning on weekdays with "Macross Saga" and "Robotech Masters" (but during lunch time and no reruns). It's like the Geek Gods heard us, and just sent us this incredible gift.

Roady: Those would be Robot Jox and its sequel Robot Jox 2: Robot Wars. It's probably been more then 10 years since I've seen them but, yes, they suck.
Poop-Flinger Prime - June 16, 2008 05:26 PM (GMT)
lol I liked robot jox - the cheese is what made it fun.
Roadbuster - June 16, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
yesssss... Robot Jox! I still need to some day rent those and watch their awefullness.
Other than that, we've got nothing for human-driven mecha (in America)
looking MF up on Wikipedia...
Macross: Frontier just premiered in Japan in April it seems. So, I doubt it's on DvD yet. I've been watching the eps subbed on Veoh. The artwork is fantastic! The story seems pretty good so far, but I'm only about 5 eps into it.
It surrounds one of the Macross exploration/colonization vessels (similar to the one in Macross 7.) and is apparently a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macross. (heh, it's about the '25th' colonial fleet)

Yes those movies were bad....
Also for Gundam's 20th aniversary there was the live-action movie G-Savior. It wasn't great, but not bad either, and the Colony leader was played by Blu Mankuma (BW Tigatron)
Roadbuster - June 16, 2008 06:26 PM (GMT)
Yah, I'm sure that Japanese have a slew of mech-live action (maybe not a SLEW)...
Oh, I forgot there was a Power Rangers movie many years back too. I guess that counts.
Poop-Flinger Prime - June 16, 2008 07:11 PM (GMT)
We need a live action
Voltron movie
Roadbuster - June 16, 2008 07:29 PM (GMT)
Yeah, but I wasn't crazy about the early leaked script for that one. It had promise, but got a little wiggy the further in you went.
LightSlayer - June 16, 2008 08:15 PM (GMT)
I've been watching the original Macross series on Veoh. (god I love that website!!) I've never seen the original. I do own all 3 generations of Robotech on DVD tho plus most of the novels (which are better by the way). But I must say I'm scarred about this movie. Yes I know they have done a lot of cool movies lately Transformers, Ironman, ect. But I believe this story need at least 3 movies to do right and I mean just the first generation. To condence it all down in to one 2 hour movie would ruin it.
By the way Macross Frontier kicks major ass! I've seen all the eps subbed so far (on Veoh ;-) ) its a must watch!
GRIMLOCK24 - June 16, 2008 09:00 PM (GMT)
While we're talking about cheesy mech flicks, I was gonna say Crash and Burn, but now that I think about it, Robot Wars is a closer pick.

I think there were actually 2 PR theatrical films (I hate myself for knowing this, must delete sometime),
But as far as actual Robot/mech based live action films from anime, the only two I know of are G-Saviour and more recently Tetsuijin 28 (Gigantor), which really was awful.
There was a rumor a couple years back that James Cameron was interested in a Mazinger Z movie, but nothing ever resulted from it.
Roadbuster - June 17, 2008 10:25 PM (GMT)
ok, I'm up to episode 7 of the Macross: Frontier series, and I have to back Slayer's comment... this series friggin RULES!
Poop-Flinger Prime - June 17, 2008 10:29 PM (GMT)
it does, its clear Sheryl wants to jump Hime-san's pole. Ranka is gonna lose :P
LightSlayer - June 18, 2008 01:06 AM (GMT)
I hope so, I want to see the singer get the guy for a change. oh and wait till you get to ep 10, its the newest one out at this time. There is an homage to Macross Zero.

Poop-Flinger Prime - June 18, 2008 01:46 AM (GMT)

Roadbuster - June 18, 2008 03:15 PM (GMT)
I don't know, I just go to Veoh and type "Macross Frontier XX" where XX is the ep number.
Dangit, they're only up to 10?! Crap... oh well, that just means I can go back to watching more UltraSeven X and Macross 7...

heh, this should be retitled the Robotech movie/macross frontier thread...
Anyway, apparently in Japan the broadacst skipped a week, so #10 is the most current, #11 airs tomorrow (the 19th) in Japan. I think this is a pretty awesome age we live in. I rememeber waiting months, or even years to get anime episodes from Japan, then came bit torrent, and now that we have video hosting sites we can see them sometimes within hours of their initial broadcast. This is great!
Roadbuster - June 18, 2008 07:43 PM (GMT)
Aye, I agree... I actually watch more TV on my computer than I do on the actual TV now. I'm waiting for a smart cable company to begin to translate that power into their service directly.
My cable provider... whom for the most part I hate... is actually getting a good start on this with their OnDemand service. They have a bunch of channels that allow you to watch programs whenever you want, regardless of owning a Tivo or recorder. There's Fearnet and the Anime channel, as well as programs from SciFi, Adult Swim, and the premium movie channels (which only work if you have that channel)
I hate having to remember to watch a show at a particular time... TV's usually just not that important that I would remember that something is on (except for Transformers and Dr Who)
Recently, I've used the OnDemand to watch the Gundam Seed Destiny. I'm on the last ep now.

Swoop - June 19, 2008 06:52 PM (GMT)
Yes, the Origin of Valkyrie line is a reuse of the 1/55 mold - easily one of the best toys of all time.

I beg to differ. I say the Six-Shot mold from g1 is just as fun if not better :)
Swoop - June 19, 2008 07:15 PM (GMT)
Feel free. It isn't like I said best toy EVER.
Poop-Flinger Prime - June 19, 2008 07:38 PM (GMT)
touche' but that was an awesome toy lol, both were.
here's a photo I found
Roadbuster - June 19, 2008 07:42 PM (GMT)
both are very cool, but didn't have Sixshot till much later.
I did have the original green Alpha fighter, the big one, and Scott's Cyclone, also the big one... those were two of the coolest things I had as a kid (still have them.. but they aren't in very great shape...)
had a smaller red Alpha as well... and the ultra fat transformable Skull Leader Veritech!
Poop-Flinger Prime - June 19, 2008 07:47 PM (GMT)
I had this plastic replica of a C-130 Hercules plane as a kid that got much use. thing was huge, like 2-3 foot wingspan
GRIMLOCK24 - June 19, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
I used to have one of the original Veritech fighters, a white one. That's all I remember about it. I was about 8 or 9. Sadly, it didn't last long, because I didn't know then what I know now. I know, I know :spank:

Yah, Veoh had it Friday too. I watched it... now waiting for ep 12.
Hrm... as a child my Robotech toys included:
Skull Squadron fat veritech, fully transformable with armor. I think I still have him, but gun handle broke at one point.
Invid Scout (may still have)
Zentradi battle pod (which ironically I never bothered getting a zentradi figure for.) (still have, stickers in horrible condition)
Scott's Cyclone, the big one, fully transformable (still have) (also one of the coolest toys ever)
6" Rook's Alpha, changed between robot and jet... but couldn't quite do a convincing guardian mode... for that matter... the jet mode wasn't very convincing either.
big Max's green Alpha, fully transformable and one of the coolest toys I ever had. (still have, one of the forward cockpit wings broke at the joint many years back though.)
mini die-cast Raidar X batteloid
mini die cast Excalibur battleloid
those are all the ones I can think of... a friend had the Hovertank figure (I don't think he had the driver figure either)
Roadbuster - June 23, 2008 03:21 PM (GMT)
dammit.... now I'm wanting to get a new Valkarie... one of the kickass ones they make these days...
Roadbuster - June 23, 2008 07:38 PM (GMT)
... aaaaaaand looking at the prices pretty much took care of that craving...
