Title: Jon's First Letter for 2007!
blythe - January 9, 2007 08:22 AM (GMT)
Guess everyone has been waiting in anticipation, so without further ado, here's Jon's 4th letter to everyone:
+++
A happy 2007 to you! I hope the first week of your New year has been good. Thank you for making me The newpaper's dude of year. It was really quite surprising! Jeanmarie (of TNP) actually mentioned that the number of votes that I received have broken the records from all previous flame awards. Wow right? My thoughts exactly…
I hope you enjoyed the performance I gave at Vivocity if you headed down to celebrate the new year with us there. I do apologise that I was not able to say hi after the countdown. I didn't get the chance to as I had to go and meet some people right after the show. Anyway, I read a lot of well wishes for my return to school and for that I thank you.
Things are probably going to be a little bit less hectic for me with regards to being in the "limelight" of local entertainment. Haha. I would like to seal up my negotiations and confirm a recording deal so that I can start working on my own album soon. I can't go around singing covers forever right? It's really time to move on to a proper music career because the competition is over and there isn't much point in living in the past. Clinging on the whole competition brand long after it has passed is rather lame don't you think?
However, speaking of the past… I do miss performing with my band. The feel is very much different as compared to being the only person on stage. The energy, the chemistry, the vibe is still something I am getting used to. Nothing beats "live" sound, honestly. If I have a chance to play with my band there have been a couple of songs that I have been wanting to do with my band, like "Fix you", "If you could only see", "all these things that I've done", "Why do I keep counting", "Hysteria", "Creep", "Underdog", "come as you are" and "leave the lights on" are just a few off the top of my head. There are songs that I would love to do with a big band too that are too many to mention.
Speaking about things I want to do, I have always believed in this and I still do, as a personality, if you "come into favour" for being somebody that you are not. You are not going to last. That's because you are not genuine and people will see through you as a result (though they may not be able to put their finger on it). So as a result, I always do away with the pretence and let people see me for who I am, in the kind of songs I sing, my "image" and in my interviews as well, though reports are never written verbatim. I have been trying my best to maintain this though it is not as easy to do as one would think. There is a school of thought that feels you should give the people what they want in order to be liked, I feel however, that you should be who you are, and people will appreciate you more (while at the same time not be too headstrong and always be open to sugeestions and compromise). What's the point of being what you are not and do what everyone else does just to be on the "safe" side? Besides, it will make you look silly because you probably aren't good at it. The worst part is that by doing that you mislead your supporters. There are downsides to thinking as I do though. Haha. Oh well, every action has a reaction.
Anyway, I will keep you all in the loop as life progresses for me (I will write at least once a month). In the meantime, I have resolved to work hard in all aspects that are important to me. All of you take care too! If for one reason or another, things are not going your way, someone once told me to "Just do the right thing, everything will sort itself out. The only people we shouldn't disappoint are ourselves. Just have faith and push on." Hopefully this quote can be of some help.
Till next time!
Jon.

Ahhh....so happy to receive a msg regarding jon's first letter for 2007. I just came out of the exam hall, so it came as a nice surprise for me :)
Yup, am dying to see jon perform with reverie. The last i saw reverie perform is last yr sept during the miss seventeen pageant at zouk. The performance is kinda dry as jon is not ard to serenade..So i really hope to see jon fronting with his band in clubs. I am betting that it is going to be fabulous. And it sounds too good to be true, i am turning 18 soon, which means i can enter clubs legally...Bring reverie in the clubs!
Kellyn - January 9, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
Dear Jon
We were really happy to be able to celebrate the first new year as Jonatics supporting you at Vivocity! You were in your element, confidently striding down the wet steps, singing Far Away with deep emotion and you truly belong to the big stage!
You exhibited a very quick thinking mind giving good honest answers during the show. When asked about JJ Lin, you applauded that he had already made his mark in the region, and when Michelle gave compliments to you and Hady, you were immediately so gracious to include Gurmit! Your resolutions were very heartwarming “Better son, better friend and better performer” and indeed you are already one and will only achieve even more in life!
You have given us great news on this very important chapter in your music career that you will be confirming your recording deal soon! It is a big decision as it will affect how your album will turn out. We are really excited and looking forward to the release! Seems like you do miss your band, it would be nice if you can perform together and wherever you perform, we will be there to support you!
The most endearing thing about you is your great personality! It comes across in your many interviews when you expressed your views honestly without pretense and impress everyone that you are able to hold your own very well! Likewise, you know sometimes a balance has to be compromise and its good not to be too headstrong. We love you for having the right values and true to yourself!
Thanks so much for promising to write regularly, it means a lot to us! Don’t drive yourself too hard though, take time to relax too! Do take good care of yourself and see you soon!
Lots of Love,
Kellyn
PS: Thanks to all the lovely gals for the SMS alert!

".....Just have faith and push on". Thanks so much Jon. Just what I needed. Was feeling down at work today & glad I checked out yr forum before leaving office. Was happy to read yr letter & it gave me some relief to read these words. Managed to cheer up too by catching the movie "Night at the Museum". Laughter's the best medicine.
Enjoyed yr performance at Vivocity so much that I had to ask my friend (sitting next to me) to excuse me for my screaming & behaving so excitedly whenever you appeared & when you performed. What a great start to the New Yr to watch yr first performance of 2007! We are looking forward anxiously but patiently for your album & of course, yr own concert! Hey, should include Reverie in, ya?!
We love you the way you are, always staying true to yourself, yr sincerity & endearing personality. Thank you also for writing to us whenever you can. Focus on yr studies and we wish you all the very very best!
Take care!
Angelyn

Dear Jon
Though you are busy on your final semester
...still wrote another letter for us. Appreciated it. yahoo
Through your personality and words,
life does not necessarily have to be blend to be modest....
that there is always an interesting and humorous angle
to it.
I also discovered that a signature print that is
personal is important in a creation of an
identity...It is imperative to find our own
points of difference and pursue them with
zeal and lots of sincerity....success will
inevitably follow ...it is only a question
of time.
Jon...thanks for another wonderful writing! smitten
Irene - January 9, 2007 07:19 PM (GMT)

Dear JON,
Thank you for your letter.
Have been staying up late looking after Shannon for the past 2 weeks. In the quietness of the nights, i've been thinking to myself, why am I going gaga over JL..
why spent countless hours reading this forum and screaming my hearts out at your performance...?
Is it because you look good? or you sing well? or your great personality? Well, there are many out there with these qualities too, so why Jonathan Leong?
Your 4th letter is the answer to my questions.Your convictions, your thoughts, your attitude towards life, just added that something more to your already great personality that made you so very outstanding. It really sealed my decision in giving you my fullest support.
Stay positive, remain grounded and like you say, be true to yourself always.
Am looking forward to your very own album.
Meanwhile, study hard, play hard and enjoy.
God Bless!
Bernice

Nice to hear you reminisce about the good ol' days with your band! I would certainly love to see you perform those excellent song choices with your mates. Especially Tonic's "If You Could Only See" and Nirvana's "Come As You Are", I think you guys will do great with them!
The quote will definitely be useful, it's very motivational & optimistic. But on the whole, I think this letter does sound a tad serious yea? Haha
Hope that i'm not adding on any melancholy to the mood, but here's something else to spur you on when things don't exactly turn out the way you want them to be.
To quote Bono- "In that moment, you don't believe you can get out of it. You think this blackness that surrounds you will never pass. But it DOES pass."
Just remember, there isn't a moment when you get stuck in and can't get out of. :)
julestan - January 11, 2007 07:31 AM (GMT)
Nice sharing there Daphie, Jon's letter sounded alittle serious? Hmm..really? Heh!
Oh well, know what, you have just reminded me of this song by U2, "Stuck in the moment". Just a snippet of it. I like this song. I am sure Jon do know this song too, right Jon?
You've got to get yourself together
You've got stuck in a moment
And you can't get out of it
It's just a moment
This time will pass
Please continue to keep in touch with us, Jon!!!
rachel - January 11, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
hi jon!
a happy 2007 to u too!
as u've resolved to work hard in all aspects that are important to u. i guess by today, u'd be back in the swim of things - doing the rounds of lecture, lunch and library. and trying to feel normal and not look conspicuous. B)
i belong to the same school of thought as u - u shd be who u are. people do and will (eventually) find u a phoney if u're a put-on act.
people in the public eye have to decide for themselves how much they want to compromise, as it is so easy to get lost, particularly where endorsements are involved. some endorsements might not say much abt who u r; rather they reveal what u're willing to do for money.
so, thumbs up for yr support in raising funds for aids victims. btw, i love love love the word 'discove(RED)' on yr t-shirt. so so apt - to me, u're THE discovery of the yr 2006!! smitten
so glad u'll write. can't wait to learn what u're learning and learn along with u! :) i very much look forward to yr next letter!
meanwhile, remain grounded, focused and be the jonathan we love.
best wishes always
and lots and lots of love
rachel

Looks like you have found your magic formula. Your image, identity is part of your value. Keep at it, continue to be the same JL whom your fans love and the public approves. Being accommodative yet not comprising principles is a difficult balance of choices. But then again, without sacrifice, there will no long-term reward. Sell your music, be yourself. Others will respect you for that. Like everyone else here, I am looking also forward to the release of your album, and that solo concert, of course.

Hi Jon
I was surfing the net and stumbled upon a blog entry of a matured supporter of yours. It was such a delightful compliment that he paid you, I just had to share.
What he said of the Final Showdown
Despite finding the gig spectacularly uninspiring, I still made a few phone calls to support Jonathan. The boy's got style and MOST importantly he has SOUL. He could go far.
What he said of the SI series :
I think Jonathan Leong has emerged as the best contestant in the Singapore Idol series. His stage presence reminds me of John Lennon (maybe its the hair) and his humble everyman smile makes him a likeable performer. If he were allowed to don shades and strap on a guitar in the competition, all the other contestants might as well just pack up and go home since it would be futile to resist the reincarnation of John Lennon. :D
carolinewr - January 16, 2007 03:13 PM (GMT)
dory welcome to the forum :)
jon has the soul..
he just needs to be himself..
the jon we all know of..
im definitely waiting for u to cut ur own album jon :D
