Title: The New Paper, 31 May 2007

Kellyn - May 31, 2007 03:24 AM (GMT)
Jon is in The New Paper on page 26. Great if someone could scan it!

It’s about him taking his own sweet time on his album and that it is likely to be a Mandopop album aimed at a regional release.

Quote “I have to do a good job and be proud of of what I record with no regrets. I don’t want to promise you something I can’t deliver.”

Have a great day, everyone!

Sure hope he does not do a slimming ad. :(

Lacks creditability for a young person to sell slimming aids, like the person mentioned in the report, unless that person is really obese.

ELECTRIC SHOW

Idol 2 runner-up Jonathan Leong
He's still not making album yet
By Jeanmarie Tan

June 01, 2007

JONATHAN Leong sure knows how to take his own sweet time.

When Singapore Idol 2 ended last September, the reality TV runner-up announced he was going to complete his political science undergraduate studies at NUS before embarking on a music career.

So we waited.

Then, two weeks ago, his final-year exams ended - he scored a 'B to B+' - and he won't be going on to do his honours.

Ah, perfect time to get cracking on that long-overdue debut album right?

Wrong.

It looks like the 25-year-old singer will continue to play the waiting game with us.

According to Jonathan, there are no concrete plans for a CD yet.

Instead, he's going to devote the rest of the year to brushing up on his Mandarin, which is apparently his priority now.

He told The New Paper: 'I want to be proficient enough to handle interviews, and express myself in Mandarin as well as I do in English.'

MANDOPOP ALBUM?

Even though his boss, Hype Records director Ken Lim, hasn't discussed any musical direction or career path with him so far, it is likely to be a Mandopop album aimed at a regional release.

Since Idol ended, Jonathan has been revising on his own by watching Chinese variety shows and listening to Chinese songs, but 'nothing intensive'.

Now, he's actively looking to take up proper classes.

Ironically, despite all that talk about Mandarin, Jonathan will perform three English songs at Chinese freesheet My Paper's first anniversary ScreamParty07 concert, alongside other stars like Gary Cao, Real and Soda Green.

It will be held tomorrow at Sentosa's Cafe del Mar at 7pm. All 3,000 tickets to the event have been given out.

Hmm, for someone on Hype Records' three-year management contract payroll, Jonathan sure is getting by even though he does nothing.

And it seems that being out of the limelight for so many months has sucked the life and personality right out of him.

Sounding listless and almost nonchalant about his showbiz future, he said rather unconvincingly: 'I'm also eagerly anticipating my own album, but it's not something you can rush.

'I understand there are challenges that lie ahead, it's no more an amateur competition but competing with established artistes, so I have to be ready.

'I have to do a good job and be proud of what I record, with no regrets. I don't want to promise you something I can't deliver.'

He also remained steadfastly non-committal when asked what is his ideal musical genre.

Something that 'suits my personality and that people can listen to and identify with' was his reply.

That's not an answer, we remind him. After more cajoling, he reluctantly revealed: 'Definitely not hip-hop or R&B. Maybe mellow rock.'

Doesn't he know what he wants?

He shot back: 'I'm a newbie, so I don't want to be demanding.'

Despite his assurances that the album 'won't take too long', one can't help but recall that fellow Idol alumni Hady Mirza's album came out last November, Jasmine Tye is Jean Yip's slimming ambassador and Joakim Gomez is acting in local TV drama Lifeline.

Isn't Jonathan concerned that Idol fever has cooled and fans may be fast losing interest?

He countered in all seriousness: 'It's a good thing. That programme no doubt helped teach me some lessons and it's a good stepping stone, but that's not what I'm about, that Idol pop thing.

'I'm done with it. I'm not riding on that 'wave'. It has run its course.

'People may forget me, but when the album comes out, I hope they'll remember again.'
