Title: Jon's 14th Letter - January 2008 letter from Jon!

eveline - January 28, 2008 06:12 AM (GMT)
Here I am...bring something to make your heart skips many beats!
Here's a letter from Jon for the month of January 2008. Enjoy reading!

---

Happy belated new year, everyone! I almost forgot to write this month's letter as my mind has been occupied with lots of melodies and stuff. There was even a four day stint where I didn't leave my workbench for 4 days... didn't even know what day was what.

I hope january has been a good start for all of you in 2008, it hasn't been fantastic for me as yet but one can only keep moving forward, yea? I have been listening to so much music recently as compared to when I was in school or any other time in my life. Probably because it's taking up the largest part of my world now...

The more I listen to songs (regardless of language and genre), I come to notice more and more that most songs sound like other songs... even the number ones on radio right now, I used to think that if one song sounded like another it was considered 'copying' but I was reading an interview about Edward Van Halen the other day and he said "You've only got 12 notes, how you arrange them is your business." which makes a lot of sense, I guess. Critics are bound to compare songs with existing hits, voices to existing singers and looks to existing personalities, it can't be helped. Especially since we are in a country that only craves the familiar. Someone once told me that almost everything we see evolves from something that already existed and that's how progress is made. If something was completely new and revolutionary, most of the time it would not be accepted amongst the familiar. Audiences and consumers need to be weaned. That conversation I had opened my mind to lots of things, so I thought to share it.
Maybe it could be relevant in your life as well, with respect to your workplace, closed minded bosses, judgmental colleagues and times when you don't feel like you fit in, perhaps?

Things have pretty constant with me as usual, still churning out tunes and working on my sound and verses, choruses, melodies, most of the time I get shot down, but that's alright. No pain no gain, huh? It's the norm, apparently. haha, so I'm still at it, nonetheless. I am very curious as to what my album will sound like eventually, its still too early to tell.

I am very much looking forward to singing at the "love is in the air"
event next feb, it will be a nice break from trying to create all the time. This is kinda funny so I think I should tell you this, I'll have to go shop for dress pants to wear that evening, I'm not so much a shopping kind of guy though I enjoy myself when I accompany my friends when they do so I can see what's new and what people are into now... that probably explains why I don't have any pants. and I figure it'll be rude to wear tattered jeans when everyone else is in suits and gowns! haha.

Oh, in the past few weeks I have received many of your xmas card, gifts, New year greetings and wellwishes. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts.

Talk to you again, soon.

Dear Jon

This must have been a really exhausting month for you. Can’t imagine your non-stop 4 day work stint, you mean it’s that intense and you were lost in your music world? You are happy with the songs now? Take care and don’t pressure yourself too much … okie!

Like reading your letter, it always enlightens me. Sharing with us the daily encounters in life and how to better manage ourselves. You always help to open our minds too.

“Someone once told me that almost everything we see evolves from something that already existed and that's how progress is made. Glad that you are composing your own songs, lots to learn along the way. Believe you will only get better with more experience. As you move forward with your career, it’s like we are also going through part of the process, feeling the nerves and joy for you. We are getting nearer each day and are full of anticipation for your debut album.

Oh, you are so cute to say that you have to shop for dress pants … it’s the little things you share that brings you closer to us. So we got to dress smart too as its quite a formal affair. We are really looking forward to “love is in the air”!

$love

I'm sure that doesn't mean you skipped the loo & bath, right! ha...ha..

We really admire you for the efforts that you're putting in to write your own songs & within such short time-frame. And furthermore in mandarin! Actually, some of us I believe, myself included, would love it if you could add one English track in your album. It's not uncommon to do that, right? (This is just a wish list for us).

Oh, talking about your shopping for 'dress-pants', my son immediately messaged me when he saw you at Hereen last week. Yes, he knew I'll get excited to hear any news about you!

Looking forward to seeing you on post-Valentine's Day and hearing you sing "Love is in the Air", perhaps?

Take care, meanwhile.
(Do take more of your mum's home-made soups, ya!)
