KaiLeng already gave us the headsup this pm. I thought she was going to put it here. She said the interview was about his favourite sport - fencing. KaiLennggg....where are you??
Carol L - February 18, 2008 04:54 PM (GMT)
Thanks Karen and Kai Leng. :D
Ya, after I got the message from Kai Leng, I went to look for the i-weekly after work and only found a copy after hunting around a few shops. Went to a couple of 7-11 shops but they didn’t have this week’s issue yet. Finally found the copy at Cheers.
Got a few pictures of Jon in his fencing gear but of course since the article is in Chinese, me no understand lah! Anyone can help to interpret? Hello Eilly? Eclipse? Alice? Oops better don’t ask Eilly, wait she run away to India like her twin did! Hahaha
Ooo….Jon in his fencing gear….mmmm….don’t get me started on our Singer Swordsman again…… smitten

Thanks, Carol for sharing. Since Elle has migrated to India, how about asking Alice to do the honours this time. Alice, Alice, translation please... (I am very good at bullying othes wink1 )
The article title of ¡°Ò»½£´³ÌìÑÄ¡° I am so tempted to add "Ò»ÇúÃùÌìÏ¡°£¡
Poor KaiLeng - remember to keep some time for "pak tho" ok?
Alice Lee - February 20, 2008 05:36 PM (GMT)
Wa! I tried to get a copy of the magazine at the petrol kiosk but nothing there.
Luckily Carol already scanned it. Ok ok, I will try to translate it, here it goes...
The Road to Fencing
Jon joined the club when he was 13. At that time, to him, fencing was everything, he would even skip classes to go to practices. "I made a sandbag at home so that I could practise everyday when I reach home."
Eventhough he practises hard and long everyday, victory did not always find him.
"I participated in the national under 20s competition, with greatest determination to win, but in the end, I lost. I was so disappointed and angry that I threw my mask when I reached home to vent my frustration."
The defeat had not reduced his interest in fencing at all, finally he succeeded in joining the national team.
Fully armed
There are 3 types of weapons used in fencing. They are the foil, sabre and epee. The difference among them is they are used for attacking different parts of the body. Foil's valid target is restricted to the torso (red portion of Jon's attire). Sabre's valid target is everything above the waist. And Epee's valid target area covers the entire body. Foil is the basic weapon.
Other than these weapons, the protective clothings are all regulated by FIE. They are the world recognised governing body for fencing.
"Our protective clothings are bullet-proof, and our mask is the same material as the helmets used by soldiers, every cm square can take up to 160kg of pressure, so if you are properly attired, fencing is not a dangerous sport."
Competition rules
During a competition, all contestants' weapons and clothings are fitted with contact devices. To prevent weapons from being too sharp, 15cm of tape is glued to the tips of the weapons. As the Foil is mainly used for thrusting, the contact device is fixed at the tip of it. Once the Foil touches the opponent, the alarm on the contact device will sound, and the judges will decide if points should be awarded.
Each round is 3 minutes, full marks for each round is 5 points, total of 3 rounds, 1 minute interval in between rounds, so total marks 15 points.
Art of Fencing
"Basically every practice which lasts for about 1 hour will make you sweat profusely, because it is very hot after putting on the mask and protective clothings, but fencing requires a collected brain and quick reflexes. Art of fencing is to successfully trick the opponent and counter-attack."
"There is no age limit to fencing, as long as you are able to hold the weapon, you can enjoy the sport. Jon disclosed,"Actually the stronger opponents are the more senior ones, because they are experienced, everytime they can succeed in tricking their opponents with false moves and counter-attack quickly."
Fees
The is no standardised course fee for fencing. Prices vary according to clubs.
Per hour ranges from $20 to $60. Mask about $300, clothings about $600, gloves about $40, each weapon costs about $300. All products are imported through the respective clubs. Since all the items are imported goods, their prices are not considered high.
Hope the above translation is ok for all. :P
Eclipse, if there is any mistake, please correct me. wink1

Alice, you are so modest. Well done - verbatim translation somemore. Elle, you can stay in India forever - hope you enjoying your dhal and prata..!
Carol, think you found the perfect female lead swordswoman for your Singing Swordsman story. :) This one seems to know everything about swordsfighting, I mean, fencing.

Wah Alice, Thank you so so much!!!
I have my I-weekly. I just bought it yesterday @ the petrol kios ESSO, near my house...:P...
My friends are very shocked, why I cant even write and read and talk in chinese but I buy CHinese magazine...haha...
Your translation is really good...thank you so much. I was so desperate to see all the chinese characters, really want to know what is the article all about..:)
so now I know....:)
Btw, I smiled behind my cubicle now in the office, imagining Jon threwing the mask when he didnt win...but I think, one word of description. He is so determined with what he wants so he finally @ the national team! isnt it a great thing? :)
Cheers
Eveline

Alice, are you working as a translator? Your translation is marvellous! Can virtually imagine every Mandarin word being precisely translated from the article. You even know the names of the fencing weapons like foil, epee coz have only heard of sabre lah?? Looks like Jon is enriching us with the fencing game, gear, rules ...
Even when he was a teen, Jon has the same driven determination for his passion … and today of course he is totally passionate in his music career! Such a strong focused person makes him absolutely very attractive and admirable!
He would never have thought that his fencing skills would create so much interest for write ups alongside his music career, adding another facet to his personality!
Thanks for Kai Leng’s sms (ya thought you will post and scan that day lor??) and Carol for scanning.
Also, thanks Karen Anastasia for starting the thread, btw dear do join us for chats, would definitely be more fun this way. Anw you do know us very well right, dun just stay away, so look forward to talking to you here soon and joining our events…! ;)

Wondering aloud - did he whack his microphone when he errrrh... came in 2nd during THAT competition?
Alice Lee - February 21, 2008 03:28 PM (GMT)
Hahaha...Glad that everyone can understand the chinese article now. Its my pleasure to be entrusted with such an important task wink1
Kellyn, actually I cheated lah, I did some "research" on the net on fencing before translating, that's why I know the names of the weapons and their functions :P
Anyway, if there is any need to translate anything in future, I am always available.
Whack microphone??...errrh...I dont suppose he did that lah, cos the mic is very expensive ley.
Actually, I am really hoping that he can quickly release his debut solo album, so that the media and all others can stop labelling him as the runner-up of that competition and start recognising and addressing him as "singer songwriter" or the likes. This shows more justification of his talent and effort.
When is his next public performance??
And when will we see his 15th letter?...Feb is ending soon...
Carol L - February 21, 2008 05:15 PM (GMT)
THANK YOU so sooooo much Alice for the translation in detail! worthy
Really appreciate your help and the effort even in doing the research to ensure you got all the details in! :D Yay! Now all those peasant girls who didn’t get the chance to go to the capital to learn Mandarin can still follow news in Chinese regarding Jon! Yipee! yahoo
Fully agree with you too that Jon would release his album soon and be appropriately acknowledged as the singer songwriter artiste that he is!
Eilly - February 21, 2008 05:36 PM (GMT)
Wow! We have discovered a new talent here ;) A great piece of translation! Thumbs up! Thanks, Alice! angel
(Eclipse, you have accidentally bullied a right person into this job, oops! ;) )
eveline - February 25, 2008 04:57 PM (GMT)
I printed Alice's translation and staple it together @ I-weekly...hahaha...
Cheers
