Title: On the Heights

Nafamere - June 18, 2008 04:05 AM (GMT)
Marix, riding a dragon back on brown Tameth, winked back from between above the Dragon Heights. The brown bugling his hello, answered shortly by the deep baritone of the dragon currently on duty. The lazily circled down to find a good landing spot, all the time when the journeyman weaver holding to dear life with one hand wrapped tightly around a riding strap and the other around a clay pot covered with thick hides.

Finally they landed. Quickly undoing the riding straps and being helped down did he approach the dragon man. Removing the helmet from the heat that it generates, revealing a dusty blond hair pulled back into a tight pony tail. Holding the pot close to his chest he said “I’m here to speak with the Weyrwoman, Alesia”. With that he removes the outer layer of his jerkin to put the pot closer to his chest to warm the pot from its journey from the intense cold of between .

The bluerider that had brought the Weaver to the Weyr frowned slightly, pulling his own helmet off and accepting the passenger's from him as he spoke. "The Weyrwoman, yeah. She said she'd be wanting to see you herself." The grizzled man took a moment to look toward his dragon. Whatever words were exchanged between the two would not be heard by the Weaver, as they were through the minds of dragon and rider.

"The Weyrwoman is informed. You'll need to go into that entrance there, just south of here and go up the stairs till you meet its end. The Weyrwoman's quarters will be to the left."

---

Alesia had been working on papers when she heard the dragon's bugle. At first, she ignored it, for the half filled form requesting a Wing transfer sit on her desk. K'jin, a brownrider that had transferred nearly 6 months ago had been in her queen's wing all this time. It was a waste of resources to keep him there as he had proved himself an able threadfighter. The queen's wing was for the injured who could still flame, for pregnant women, and for golds. K'jin would do much more good in the higher wings.

To say that was her only motive would be a lie. As the two of them had grown closer, she'd found more reason to push him away. Why? She didn't know why.. maybe she wanted to end it before he ended it himself... to distance herself from everyone before Iolath rose. She didn't want to influence her dragon in a decision that would potentially spell disaster. After all, browns almost never sired a queen egg.

The man with the firelizard eggs is here. Iolath's voice was a welcome disruption, and Alesia quickly put up her pen and stood up. Her room had been cleaned recently.. the only clutter was the plates from breakfast she'd neglected to clear, and the jumble of hides on her desk. She didn't use her personal study much lately. She'd gotten sick in there months ago and though no one else seemed to be able to smell it, Alesia always seemed to smell a whiff of vomit every time she went into the room. L'gan had insisted it was all in her head as it had been cleaned thoroughly multiple times by drudges, and it probably was. Still, she didn't like to be reminded of how sick she had been with that virus, and going into her study always seemed to be able to invoke such memories.

Never mind that though; she had company coming with precious cargo. Alesia straightened out her tunic and ran her fingers through her shock of blonde hair. She probably looked a mess, but then again she rarely cared much about her appearance. Iolath, who had been lounging on the great stone couch within the large room that was their weyr, lifted her head. I do not understand why you are so intrigued by firelizards. They don't do much at all.

Nafamere - June 18, 2008 05:27 AM (GMT)
He stood there waiting while the riders seemed to just stare at each other... Though hearing that the Weyrwoman herself would be seeing to himself made his duty to Weyr and Pern more proud.

"Thank you blue rider," looking to the dragon, "and thank you."

With that he held the pot closer to his skin as he felt the coolness of its passing between becoming warmer. Still wherein his jerkin and fur lined leather pants he quickened his step to the entrance.

Arriving just at the door of the Weyrwoman's quarters, he stood there for a moment before knocking on the door. Making sure that the eggs were still in good condition did he finally knock on the door.

Nako - June 19, 2008 08:51 AM (GMT)
The knock on the door couldn't come soon enough for the anxious Weyrwoman, and she all but skipped to the door to open it. "There you are! Come in... and let me have those real quick.."

She wouldn't wait for him to oblige her as she all but plucked the clay pot out of his hands, turning away from him to head toward the heart. It could have been construed as being a bit rude, but she hastily explained over her shoulder as she carefully extricated the eggs and put them on a tray of sand she had prepared. "No matter how much you put layers over them, it always seems like between cools them just a touch. It's important to warm them up again, especially since you'll be needing to take some of them back through between again."

Then, rather offhandedly, she remembered common courtesy. "Forgive my haste... it is just that last time, we did not have as much luck with keeping the last batch of firelizard eggs warm. Some wherry headed drudges left them in the kitchens on a counter where they were ignored for the better part of a few hours." As she spoke, her eyes appraised the eggs. Firelizard eggs were even harder than dragon eggs to discern size and potential colors within, and the gold egg was more often than not, completely identical to the rest of the eggs. Finally finished with her task, she laid out all 32 eggs on the tray, close enough for the hearth to begin to warm them. It was a large clutch, undoubtedly from a queen firelizard.

Finally though, she had to turn and look at the lad. Not much younger than her, but certainly shorter. Then again she tended to tower over others at a shade higher than six feet in height. Coming towards him, she extended her hand in greeting. She was a Weyrwoman notorious for lack of formality, and when she exhibited it, it was often in a masculine manner such as a handshake.

"You're Marin, yes? Well, I must congratulate you in getting these eggs here safely. Once they're warmed up, I'll take the Weyr's share of them and you'll have the rest to take to Hurricane Hold." But her other hand came up quickly, one authoritative index finger raising to highlight her words. "But not until you and these eggs have had a rest. I've already sent word to the Hold that you won't be expected up there till tomorrow."

Iolath, curious about the goings on, sat up on her stone couch to better see what was going on. Even resting in her bed, the queen was quite an imposing sight being on the larger side of the scale with a fiery sheen to her golden hide.

Nafamere - June 19, 2008 09:21 AM (GMT)
Seeing the rather large Queen peek around the corner did he realize that this one was very much larger than the one that he had witnessed at Southern Weyr. Startled he quickly shook the weyrwomans hand with a gentler grip. Noticing her firm grip did he tighten his a bit more. Though making sure that he showed no dominating features in his more mescaline grip.

"Yes I do believe that I'm the one." he said with a smile releasing her hand. "And a cup of Khal would be wonderful right now... this was my first time between, Weyrwoman Aleica." he said her name for pure jest for mispronouncing his own name. He smiled at that one.

"I was told by the Lord Holder of Southern to get these eggs directly to you and to a hearth as soon as possible. Though it seems that you where just as bit hasty with it as I myself was." he started to take off the jacket that he was wherein so he could cool down a tad, revealing rippled muscles under a tight fitting shirt. He gestured to a chair asking politely if he could take a seat.

Nako - June 19, 2008 09:52 AM (GMT)
Her expression grew a bit odd when he didn't pronounce her name correctly, but not because of how he said it but his joking tone. Then, she realized, fumbling over herself a bit. "Oh hold on then.. Mariz.. Marik.. Marix! I've broken one of those unspoken rules about remembering people's names." She gave a laughing snort before nodding in acknowledgment, reinforcing his desire to sit with a gesture of her hand.

Striding over to her desk, she lifted up a pot of klah and looked inside of it. It was empty, and cold. Well, nothing that couldn't be fixed easily! "I apologize for the mess.." Alesia murmured, hefting a handful of dirty dishes into the service elevator, sticking her head down the chute to bark out some orders that would no doubt echo down to the kitchens far below.

"Well... last time we had eggs delivered, most of them didn't survive the incident. They are a prized commodity out here." Sitting down in a chair across from the Journeyman, her expression went a bit blank as those with dragons or firelizards often did. Whether she bespoke her dragon, or her firelizard directly would be unknown, but within moments a ghostly colored, small queen flitter popped into existence. It landed daintily on the Weyrwoman's outstretched arm, eying the newcomer with obvious distrust. "This little thing wouldn't have even hatched had her shell not fallen from the hearth and broke on the stone floor. For a while, we didn't think she would even be able to survive."

Nafamere - June 19, 2008 10:08 AM (GMT)
“Well No one is perfect, not even Weyrwomen.” He took his seat “I do believe that it is a common misconception that they are.” He removed his gloves tucking them into his wide leather belt with the insignia of a Journeyman Weaver Craft.

Laughing a bit more, a deep baritone, at what she had said about lizards being comedies. “Well down in Southern, we just happen to be up to our eyeballs in em’,” he chuckled “I mean if you see a Dragon pop back from between, you can bet on how many fire-lizards follow behind...”

His expression grew more somber hearing about the mistreated eggs. With a disapproving glower he stated coldly, “No creature in all of Pern should ever be treated so unfairly. Everything should get proper respect, be it a hard caught fish or even another animal.” He closed his eyes for a second before he continued. “Though I would have to say that I am quite happy that at least a few of the clutch survived the careless mistake of a drudge.”

Nako - June 19, 2008 07:39 PM (GMT)
The Weyrwoman had taken to absently picking underneath her fingernails as the man spoke. It always made her uncomfortable to hear strangers gush about their morals in such a way. "Well, you can't expect much from most drudges. Those that -can- be relied on tend to be promoted."

As if on cue, the service elevator rang out, and Alesia was on her feet to retrieve its contents. Two mugs, a pitcher of klah, and a generous serving of rolls decorated the tray that she carefully brought back to the table to set down between them. "But yes, I remember how Southern was. I resided in Tiazora Weyr in Southern throughout my weyrlingship before moving here."

Nafamere - June 20, 2008 06:33 AM (GMT)
Seeing her absent mindlessness he decided to close the subject and move on. "True Weyrwoman Alesia, some drudges can promote themselves through good deeds and reliability." stating with a matter of fact tone.

Taking the pitcher of klah, he pored both the mugs handing one to her and drinking deeply of his own before continuing. "Tiazora Weyr you say? I have only had one opportunity to go there myself." with a smile thinking back on a distant memory, "It was a wonderful time. Able to see the dragon up close rather than in the sky was a wonderful experience."

Putting his mug on the table he reached for a roll that looked quite delouses.

Nako - June 21, 2008 05:37 AM (GMT)
"Hm.. yes, beautiful Weyr. I envy the fact they are in Southern. I lived in Telgar before I was Searched, so I'm used to a more temperate climate but I admit that I miss the warmth of Southern." They were making small talk, and Alesia wasn't much to keep such stale conversations going for long. So.. what would she do? Talk about work, of course!"

"So.... Hurricane Hold had need of a Weaver? With winter coming around the corner I suppose they'll need more people within the Hold to make their sweaters.... I don't envy you; the women of the hold tend to take pride of their ability to knit the finest and most seaworthy of sweaters. Expect a bit of scrutiny but don't hold it against them as they are quite a simple people." It was a potentially derogatory statement, but the Weyrwoman said it with the utmost sincerity. "And the firelizards... I assume they're wanting to train them to help find the fish; last I heard they weren't very successful in coaxing dolphins willing to stay in their fishing waters in the winter months. Firelizards tend to be a more... devoted companion despite the weather. It's just as well; Hurricane Hold got its name because of the treacherous storms they tend to have."

Nafamere - June 21, 2008 08:29 AM (GMT)
Gin finishing up his roll sat there listening to the weyrwoman talk. Catching the hint of the competition that he would face inside the hold made him feel more jubilant about his craft of choice. Grabbing a hold of his belt where his craft symbol was engraved made him feel up to anything that could be thrown at him.

“I would have to say for one the Master Weaver is getting old in his turns, and needs a replacement because he is feeling his time coming.” Saying with a sad expression. Remembering all of his teachers at the craft hall are getting closer to that day and others already expired. “So they sent me for ideational training to take over once he passes on.”

Thinking how the lizards could help with fishing went beyond his thought for the usefulness of the flits. Thinking to himself well they could take messages and small objects, and I have seen them fish for themselves before… it could be possible to train them on a wider scale. “Well then I guess that I need to go rest up for tomorrow’s flight.” Standing up to get ready to leave for the bunk or where ever he may be sleeping decided to add, “Where will I be sleeping? This is my first time to this Weyr, though I hope that it will not be the last. I do love being around the most magnificent creatures of Pern.” He said standing proud being in the presence of one of the greatest weyrwoman that Pern has known.

Nako - June 21, 2008 08:51 AM (GMT)
Alesia politely stood up to see the man out. She didn't want to seem rude, but she wasn't necessarily one to just become best friends with someone upon first meeting them, so those initial conversations always seemed a bit odd. Regardless, she'd done the obligatory entertaining, and she was glad that the man seemed eager to retire for the evening. "If you pass the stairway you came down, you go straight until you see another stairway to your right, and that will lead you to the lower caverns. The headwoman no doubt has a room for you ready. Just find one of the drudges and they'll point you in the right direction"

She walked with him to the door, returning his comment with a genuine grin. "Yes, they are magnificent, aren't they?" The tempered, refined expression of the Weyrwoman softened, glancing toward her queen despite herself. At that moment, it was easy to see why some considered her beautiful.. but that only lasted a moment before the refined mask of dignity returned, turning her gaze back to the Weaver. "Tomorrow morning, we'll discuss which eggs will stay and which will go, but till then, rest well."

((you don't have to rp the whole thing with finding his room and whatnot, and if you want they don't even have to rp the sorting out of the eggs. it's really up to what you want to do. What had we agreed on.. 15 to hurricane and the rest to the Weyr to distribute?))

Nafamere - June 21, 2008 11:54 PM (GMT)
The young man returned her smile, “thank you for telling me the way. I will see to the nearest drudge if I happen to lose myself.” On the way to the door he collected his possessions that he had laid on the table near the door. “By the way, when I do sort out those eggs I will attempt to identify the queen egg for your weyr. Common curticy, since your hospitality has been so gracious and quite pleasing conversations.” He took a swift bow before exiting.

“See you in the morning Alesia, Weyrwoman of Kharasi Weyr.” He walked down the hall waving away. Knowing full well that he will attempt his hardest to identify the queen flit for the weyr. Gathering up all his knowledge of the fire lizards, as he walked down the corridors.

((Yea I will leave that the eggs and the meeting in the morn to be automatic, going to start role playing Elain and my drudge some))
