Name: Kolrin
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Sexual Preference: Bisexual
Rank: Mining Journeyman
Appearance: Kolrin, or Kol, as his friends and family call him, is a rather big man. For many generations, his family has mined the earth of Pern. As a result, the men in his family tend to be tall and muscular, or have the potential to be muscular, rather. Kol is no exception, standing at around 6’0” and weighing close to 250 pounds, most of which is muscle he has gained over the turns he has been working in the mines.
His face is rugged and hard, with a strong, square jaw. Heavy brows sit over deep-set, intelligent eyes the color of storm clouds. His mouth is wide and firm, conveying smiles very well. His face also holds a scowl quite well, which can transform him into a very intimidating man. Shaggy, coarse hair covers his scalp, kinking and curling around his face. In color, it is a shining red-gold. However, its sheen is often hidden by the fine dusting of dirt that covers him whenever he works down in the mines.
Personality: Kolrin is generally a very kind-hearted man and it doesn’t take much to get him to crack a smile. He is very friendly, stopping to talk with just about anyone he meets, whether he knows them or not. Always, he is taking time from him own schedule to help others, usually putting others before himself. Because of this, he can wear himself out, but it does not take him long to recover, being a very hardy individual.
Kolrin can be very stern in certain situations, not letting people slide by with laziness. After he became a journeyman at age 20, he was given an apprentice class to teach. He would not let a single student slack off, but was always helping them with any issues they had so that they could pass successfully. He learned this attitude because of his younger sister who tried to get her way with everyone. So because of his kind, yet stern demeanor, he is very good with children and someday dreams of having many of his own.
Most people try to avoid angering intimidating people, because they usually have explosive tempers. Kol is no exception. He has a bad habit of yelling and hitting things when he grows angry, though he thankfully has yet to hit a person in anger. The fortunate thing is that he is very slow to anger, having a great deal of patience and tolerance towards other people. It really takes something major to set him off.
History: Kolrin actually grew up in a mining camp near Crom Hold. Being one of the larger camps, Kol learned to be very social from a young age. For generations, the men of his family were miners, but when his fathered married his mother, it brought in a small bit of strife. Kol’s mother was never raised to mine. In fact, she was a harper who had left the craft before becoming journeyman. She loved her husband, but never approved of his craft, seeing it as too dangerous. When Kol was born, she vowed he would never mine, being too precious to her. It wasn’t until she had her daughter and mellowed a little that she allowed Kol to start an apprenticeship in the mines.
He was a late starter, but his father took Kol under his wing, showing him the tricks of the trade. Kol rose rapidly, excelling at what he was taught. Allowed to branch out from simply mining, Kolrin began to study how to mine gems, as well as learn spelunking so that he could help search for new areas to mine, as well as create a way to get there.
When Kolrin turned 18, his mother got him a gift. She had been to a gather and had seen a stand selling firelizard eggs. Knowing how useful they were to miners, since they would kill tunnelsnakes as well as detect dangerous gases, she bought one for her son. The egg hatched into a Green, which Kol named Beryl, after one of his favorite green stones. Now she accompanies him every time he goes down into the mines.
A turn after receiving his egg, Kol got involved with a woman in the camp by the name of Rhyani, who was the head of the camp’s daughter. He courted her for a few months before marrying her. He was very happy with his life, especially after Rhyani gave birth to his daughter, which they named Lynn. This happy life, however, was ruined when Rhyani came down with the wasting sickness, which killed her a few months later, leaving Kol with his 4 turn old daughter. This disaster was only added to when his father’s wher, who Kol had been close to, died after saving his bonded from a rock fall. Kol’s father, seeing how his son was, gave him some advice. He told Kol to take his daughter and move to Kharasi Weyr, which he heard would be making a mining hold soon. He could leave his daughter in the care of the crèche and help with the construction. He would also have the chance to buy a wher egg so that he could make sure he and his daughter had a good life.
Taking his father’s advice, Kol packed up and transferred, setting himself and Lynn into weyr life until the hold could be completed.

What a lovely character! Accepted, but I don't know if firelizards and dragons for that matter have a sense of smell acute enough to sense bad air in the mines. It's okay if he has a firelizard as they are quite useful in other ways. XD
Page 137 of the 2nd edition of the Dragonlover's Guide to Pern states that Nicat used flitts to detect gas leaks. =D
But thank you for the compliment on Kolrin. <3
