Title: Key States in SGM history
Norm - January 24, 2007 07:04 PM (GMT)
I'm curious as to what posters think are the five most important US states in the history of SGM through the years. From afar I'd say (in no particular order) Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Texas.

I know some folks from Alabama, Arkansas and West Virginia that might :swords: you, too!
Gayla - January 24, 2007 07:46 PM (GMT)
I think you defintely have to list Alabama.....if for no other reason than for the fact that so many great Gospel vocalists were born and "reared" there! Of course, you listed Texas....which is a natural choice due to the Stamps influence. I would like to include AR because it is the home state of my favorites; however, I do not think it would be in the top 5. West Virginia could make a good argument though.

So what five would our SGM history Guru pick? If you add the three you cite, what three do you drop from my list? I thought about West Virigina (since it is about 400 miles from my home) but thought the others rated higher. I think Gayla made a good point about Alabama's great vocalists but does that move it ahead of Georgia or Tennessee?

Hey, I'm not here with the solution. . . I'm just part of the problem.
I'd probably pick Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, and North Carolina.
I put NC at the end of the list because I'm a native of that state and know more about NC artists than other states. I'd say the other four would rank ahead of NC.

Thanks, John.
I included both Carolinas because I thought they gained in importance through the years. especially NC which, from a distance, seems to be the center of the SGM world these days.

I thought the Blackwoods were from MS originally.

you're right, Gayla. I was thinking about the many years they based their group in Memphis.

I would consider Kentucky as one of the top 5. Mainly because of groups like The Crabbs , The Rambos, and The Goodmans and The Hinsons were headquartered there for many years. Also because NQC has been there several years.

Texas must be considered in the top 5. V.O. & Frank Stamps,M.L Yandell,Robert Arnold,&Marion Snider come to mind.

JCB, I agree with your list but not your order. North Carolina should be first. We were first in flight also. B)

You don't box with an open hand.

I hope Roy Williams learned a lesson Sunday. Don't try to rub it in on a team that has pride. You just don't try to score two more points when the game is over....
not with your star player, anyway. I hope the young man is okay.

Dean, We had a game with West Va. but they didn't show.........
