Averyfineline blog had a rumour that Bass Gene McDonald is leaving the Florida Boys. I emailed Les Beasley and he responded to me today that it is true that Gene has decided to get off the road.

Heard he and his family were moving up around Nashville and he was gonna work for a "bus" company...Gene's a great fellow...hate to see him leave the group but wish him the very best...just hope Les can get a replacement that's as personable as Gene...

I am sorry that Gene is coming off the road. I talked to him in Atlanta ,Texas a while ago. I have talked to a lot of singers ,but Gene is one of the most personable that I have ever met.He was interested in the old albums as I am.Besides all that, what a singer,what Range. Les will have big job to replace him.

I don't know this for a fact, but I heard that his last concert with the group will be this Sunday evening in Mesquite, Texas.

Met him at GOGR 2 years ago.
Wanted to hear him at Parker Reunion this Saturday,

Will Van Wyngarden (formerly of the Journeyman)
was with the FB at the Parker Homecoming Sat. Nite.
He is filling in for 2 weeks. Have heard strong
rumor who replacement is but will not share
that because that is not my place to do.
Comes from good source but still not willing
to say.

Les Beasley has done a pretty good job of bringing good talent to the Florida Boys. Here's hoping that he does it again.
So, we should be hearing pretty soon?

Me too. I think he's one of the best of the current bass singers. Incredible range too.

Although I haven't seen the Florida Boys, I've been told that Butch Owens is singing bass with them now.
I don't know if he is a permanent replacement or only temporary.
I've never heard Butch sing, but some that know him and his talents say he would fit the Florida Boys' style well.

I heard Butch sing a few weeks ago & will do a good job with TFB.Butch is a friendly guy and a good man for SGM,but he will be standing in the place of the bass singer with the widest range on the road today. What more can I say.
